AuthorTopic: Can U Identify VST Instruments In Any Commercial Muzik???

I was going 2 ask if anybody could recommend a VST instrument 2 play the lead's from Better Off Alone by Alice DeeJay &/or Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene III (or whatever number that popular piece is!)

Then I thought it would B cool 2 start a thread where we could share that information. So I'll start...

Full Fathom Five - Who's Your Daddy sounds like the
Super Sync Lead preset from the Pro-53.

I hear a fair bit of software used in television shows and video games.. Like Rebirth on some kiddy tv show and the first preset off Pro52 (sync lead) used for the music in Unreal Championship 2003.. I'm sure it's everywhere though.. I'm sure all the cheesey pop music still use Korg Tritons..

HAHA.. That's right.. In some crappy Australian tv show last year I remember it was about some students who had to put a musical peice for some assignment.. It showed a quick screenshot of them recording audio (a female vocalist) with REBIRTH 338!! Even soundrecorder would have been more useful for that one Wink

Moulan Rouge ???

Very Happy

Interesting trivia, the French painter Toulouse Lautrec who was a frequent guest at Moulin Rouge and other Parisian 'Cabarets' as his paintings and posters for them demonstrate, actually died from drinking too much absynth. A strong and very addictive liquor drink widely used in those days. How's that for OFF TOPIC Laughing

I just had a listen to Leonard Cohen's 'Ten New Songs'. Cohen's always paid more attention to the lyrics than the music, but the backing music here sounds like it's general midi. Cheap general midi. Fake-sounding GM guitar solos and everything. Fascinating.

While the VSTi Absynth may have been used for the music in "Moulin Rouge" I believe that what "lights" is referring to is the fact that lead character drinks absinthe (which is where Absynth got its name from) and has a hallucinogenic experience,

I was in the Jean Michel Jarre concert a few years back and he played THAT Oxygene (the popular one) lead synth sound with Nord Lead I. In fact he introduced the synth to the audience before beginning the song and played a few notes with it (the Oxygene melody) and the audience went "aaah..." Smile
So maybe you could do the Oxygene lead sound with Discovery VSTi, beacause it is a Nord Lead clone.
In fact I just today played with Discovery and found out that i got exactly the Rendez-Vous lead synth sound out of preset "Oxygene" by tweaking filter cutoff and resonance and tweaking the ADSR curve a little bit.

Absynth is on nearly every track on new Massive Attack album: "100th window" Itīs the main instrument, and I found some presets they used in the Absynth Yahoo group - banks.

The Madonna/James Bond song 'Die Another Day' sounds like alot of Pro52 stuff and maybe some other plugs. A friend of mine is pissed at her for 'ripping me off' with the same porto-lead sound.Wink Her guys like it, I like it - what can you do? Laughing

I'm not a big Madonna fan, but I kinda like her tune. Elton John says it's the worst piece of music ever (for a Bond film atleast?)

Not as powerful as Mezzanine, but I still thought there was plenty of good stuff. Haven't really warmed to the Sinead O'Connor tracks, partly because of the shallow humbug new-age lyrics. ('Your mind can never change unless you ask it to... Make your choice - joy!... etc.' Confused) Love tracks like 'Small Time Shot Away' though. Classic MA.

Anyway, another Massive Attack album scheduled for later this year, with Marshall back on board. And guest appearance by Tom Waits. Now that I've got to hear.

COOL!!! Thanx 4 the info I really appreciate it. U said he was playin a Nord Lead 1 & on the DiscoDSP website it says that Discovery has a "SysEx patch dump import from Nord Lead 2". Would U know if the Nord Lead 2 is just an updated version of the Nord Lead 1 or a totally different keyboard?

There lyrics have always been kind of out there and confusing. That's great that another one is coming out this year though... Has anyone checked out their dvd?? They make some crazy dope videos. Don't get to see any of them except for a couple here in the states...

Just picked up The Boards of Canada's 'Twoism' CD yesterday - ALOT of the sounds there sound familiar to VSTi's and DXi's I've just dabbled on recently? Either their analogs are getting bad, or VSTi's are getting GOOD!Smile

I liked the CD much better than Geogaddi - but these lads got to get back to those infectious melodies and arrangements like ROYGBIV and Aquarius
again soon. And enough with the 'rehashes' from MHTRTC, okay? Laughing

"Twoism" dates to 1995, so I seriously doubt there's a single VSTi on there. They didn't sound as good as analog back then! Wink

I love BOC's synth sounds and I wish they weren't so tight-lipped about what they use, but I swear I can hear a Roland SH-101 at times... Other times, it's pretty clear that they're using sampled synths/instruments (most of their electric piano sounds sound sampled, for instance).

a friend of mine pointed out that the new massive attack album has attack all over it. I gave it a listen and sure enough I would tend to agree.

As for as I know from talking to 'Bola' who knows BOC they have a small amount of 'real' stuff they use for everything. Wish I'd paid attention when I was told what exactly Smile

So, probably no VST for them.

I suppose you mean Oxygene part IV.

Any reasonably good analogue simulation, using two detuned saws, a nearly closed 24dB/oct lowpass filter, and a slight delay on the attack on the envelope for filter and amp.

First lesson in synthesis: the detuned saws. Come on, spend at least a few minutes trying to program the sound. And if you rely only on presets you might as well go buy a sample cd.

No offense.

The Nord Lead 2 has the same basic sound as the Nord Lead, with some extra polyphony, ring modulation, filter key tracking, more modulation options.
Jarre originally used an ARP 2600 for this sound, I believe.

That's true about 1995 being on the CD when I come to think of it. Embarassed But in playing The Invader with some new patches right after, it was hard for me to tell the difference. Shocked So I guess that says something for all the good soft stuff these days? Wink

I do love the BOC sound too, and would guess they've got a SH-5, Arp, and maybe a VCS3 in there somewhere? What I love is how they managed to get that Ontario Science Center narration and/or Federal Liberal programs paraphenilia sound? Being in Canada all my life and growing up in the 'fatherhood' of Trudeau, the Boards of Canada have DEFINATELY recaptured alot of the '70's soundtrack aura that I was so familiar with. ('Cause I'm a old fart now! Laughing )

Wonder then if they will ever plan to go 'soft'? (Not that they need to, but I'm sure it would simplfy the angst they must go through to get a song done?Wink)

funkstorung use VSTi's for all their stuff now, after reading an interview with them on the NI site. 'Heathen' by David Bowie sounds like it uses a lot of soft-synths, especially pads, although it doesn't sound like 'Absynth' was used, could be a Pro-52, as it has a warm analog sound, but still very precise and constrained, could be the JD-800 too I guess. Elsewhere, No Doubt use the PPG Wave a lot on the 'Rock Steady' album.

I have no idea, but read this interview:

http://www.angelfire.com/on/pisd/intboc.html

Afterwards, you'll be asking as I was... what in the HELL could that "secret weapon" be?!

Personally, I wouldn't at all be surprised if one of their secret weapons is tracking to analog tape...

Great interview, and kinda confirms my suspicions of their inspirations. NFB - Duh! Embarassed But the 'secret weapon', hmmm? I still say they must use a 'software rythem' unit for those huge beats and effects? And would soft drums predate Steinbergs 'Neon' synth? (Or whatever the first synth was?) The drums don't sound like any old beat box I've ever heard?

Thanks for the extra insight Lazlo!Smile

don't they run their music through one of their old hi-fi units, I remember reading somewhere else, that they use this battered old hi-fi which gives it their distinctive sound? Is this the 'secret weapon'?
