AIYEEE!
I gotta tell you, I've used Dirtbag in 3 out the 4 last "sketches" I've done. Sketches are the 4-bar loops I make to get a groove together before I make a real song. Dirtbag is one of my favorite synths now. Thanks for the update!

WOW.....that is a great new gui!
man do you sleep? I LOVE dirtbag! thanks again for what you do.
| DavidGig | Posted: 16th February 2003 13:48 | |
Check out the motor on/off effect! Very nicely done, thanks ik. (Say, what's with the "Connection to a module inside" popups that occur with mouseovers? Is that an unavoidable feature of SE?) David

Two questions:
1. Are you going to drop having two versions of Dirtbag? You had a Dirtbag-R version before. 2. Why aren't your tonebars in order? Why is 5 1/3 between 8 and 16? I'm not an organist, so this baffled me. Is there a reason someone more familiar with organs could clue me in on?

1. I've been wondering to drop the on-screen keyboard. But (!) if one likes that, no big deal to release one version with the keyboard. (Need feedback on this.) 2. Hammond tradition. Don't ask me why, but this is how originally Hammonds were made. NI's B4 follows the same trend. ik.

I've never seen this. Can you give details how did you get it? ik.
| ianweb123 | Posted: 16th February 2003 23:51 | |
IK, you need to edit out the hint text at the bottom of the controls property page..
| ik | Posted: 17th February 2003 05:18 | |
Funny, I never got these in Chainer or OPlat. -or is it related to some system settings? - ik.

ThanXX IK!! gold knobs and ya just can't have too much faux wood on screen. ThanXX too for adding the "leslie".....what's a drawbar without one! Cheers.....CL

Hey IK, looking good.... but I know those knobs and buttons from somewhere else
| ik | Posted: 17th February 2003 06:59 | |
Haha! Yes(!). Good guess Peter! I was just waiting if one picks them. SynC Modular nostalgy!!!! I used SynC Modular to make the knobs/ buttons: made a 31 step knob in SynC and then captured the screen for each position. Cut tnem off, then combined with TrentStitch. Same for the button. Poor man's skinner. ik.

If it works why not Btw, I have so many requests for my knob-creation program that I will definitely code it over the next few weeks. Might be something for you too Now if I can find the time to actually try out Dirtbag......
| ik | Posted: 17th February 2003 09:09 | |
Hmmmm, I missed something. Where is it? ik.

What processor do you use? On my Athlon XP, 1.4GHz, the max CPU usage ~ 35% in OPlat, and about the same in Chainer. I can play w/o any hicks. But, yes it is very CPU heavy... I can hardly see ways to make it more CPU friendly w/o compromising sound quality. Don't forget, its made with SynthEdit ... ik.

Yeah, I found out this morning. Hrrrrrrrrrr. Never thought DirtBag ever be so popular Actually the new (and I think, now its final) DirtBag is (nearly?) ready: - Refined GUI (thanks to Ian Webster for his help). - Expression added. - Delay for Percussion added. - Complete midi automation (controller map included). - Total of 90 presets. I might gonna add additional presets, but I think DirtBag now reached its final stage. As SynthEdit progresses to its non-beta stage I'll recompile it and upload it with the hope of more CPU-friendlyness. MANY THANKS TO EVERYBODY FOR THE FEEDBACKS SO HELPED ME TO BUILD and REFINE DirtBag. Enjoy, ik.

I got an Intel P3 950Mhz, and I expect it will be totally useless this time next year? And you and Ian are becoming a team? I'm a big fan of Ian's as well, so this 'bond' has got to be awesome for DirtBag! And how do you define 'expression' for the upcoming version. Is that like AT response?
| ianweb123 | Posted: 20th February 2003 14:07 | |
Don't get too excited John, I merely helped ik put a little bit of 'gloss' on the GUI. I don't think ik needs any help from anybody as far as building synths go ATB Ian

Well let us not forget your fine works Ian! MaTricks, V-Box, Phat Chap - they'll be right up there as well IMHO. But that sure is a goodie GUI for Dirtbag now! Like a cherry '57 Chevy! Do you use ArmorAll to get the dash so slick?
| ianweb123 | Posted: 21st February 2003 07:40 | |
No I just took the graphics that ik already had and waved the Photoshop wand over them..

I was absent the last 3 weeks (business trip to Japan) and now I come across to this new version of one of my favorite free synths. Why the hell isnīt it posted in the News?
| mistertoast | Posted: 25th February 2003 09:22 | |
Dirtbag continues to work up my top ten list of synths. It's not just great--it goes to 11.
| ttoz | Posted: 26th February 2003 14:56 | |
are the clikcs and minor crackles in this synth on purpose??? I get it in orion Plat and Logic 5....version 1.60 and 1.62, on patches where the "dirt" is turned right down, such as "clean" and "church"...
| ik | Posted: 26th February 2003 17:04 | |
Try to pull back the 'Gain' knob and/or the 'Depth' knob of the Rotary section to see if it gets better. Possible reason is occasional 'hard clipping' when the volume gets too high. On purpose? Hmmmmm.... if we are talking about the same 'effect' then occasional and not too laud 'gurgling' is actually could sound pleasing (to my ears), but - I agree - if it gets too loud ............ we need earplugs. ik.
| ttoz | Posted: 27th February 2003 08:16 | |
I don't think we are talking about the same effect...the one I am describing is akin to a "vinyl" that seems to be in the sound itself...it is not very heavy, similar to izotope vinyl dx plugin on light settings....
Particularly noticeable on "small church" patch(which is a lovely patch btw)... turning gain and rotary right down had no effect... If you could kindly play this patch at its default setting for me, i would be curious if you have the same effect happen
| DavidGig | Posted: 27th February 2003 10:23 | |
yes ttoz, those little clicks during sustain have been there for me too since the beginning. The patch "Clean" is another one where they're pretty obvious. Not in the distortion section, not in the rotary section, not in the delay section, not in the perc section, so I don't know where they're coming from. But as you say, they're small enough not to make the plug unusable.
Still a great instrument--thanks ik. (BTW, the other odd thing I have always wondered about is why doesn't the perc sound go through the gain/volume controls?) David
| ik | Posted: 27th February 2003 14:44 | |
ttoz: I checked both 'Clean', and 'SmallChurch' presets. I am puzzled. Me, (and my daughter too) hear absolutely NOTHING but clean sound on my system: AthlonXP 1.4 GHz, 256MB. Hosts: Chainer, OPlat. It would be great to go to the bottom of this: Anyone else HAVE, or DOESN'T HAVE this 'effect', and if yes/no on what system? ik.
| ttoz | Posted: 27th February 2003 15:14 | |
What OS do you use IK?
I am on Win2k SP3....if you are still on 98 or ME it could possibly be that I guess....Otherwise, it may be one of those "rare"cases that for an unexplainable reason the synth doesn't like my system, maybe my sound card, chipset..who knows? Weird!!!
| ik | Posted: 28th February 2003 04:04 | |
WindowsXP (home). It's an 'off the shelf' Compaq Presario 6000. with absolutely no extras, (on board soundchip). I use Steinberg's AsioDx Driver, and a Roland PC300 USB midi controller. Thats all. It looks like ... as you guys describe it ... these are tiny random spikes. I could hardly see - looking the structure of DirtBag - how it could be generated from here. (There are no random events in DirtBag) My guess is its either hardware (processor) or system related. Also, SynthEdit is still beta, so this also could be one of those minor 'bugs', Jeff needs to look into. ik.
| DavidGig | Posted: 28th February 2003 09:49 | |
Pretty random, i'm afraid. On the other hand, it's still there even when rendered by Cubase directly to a wave file (so it's not driver-related).
It MAY be coming from the LP filter. Seems worst when "Cut/LPF" (in the Filters block) is set to minimum and "Cut" (in the Tonewheels block) is set to max. When you do this (starting from a patch like "Clean") can you hear anything? Again, it's not really that bad. (And besides, it kind of sounds like you've very accurately modeled a loose wire in the amplifier |
