Whats the latest on Kontakt's ability to handle large (streaming from disk) samples.
I had heard there were some problems but was wondering if anyone has experience with streaming samples in Kontakt. dano

Depends what you're trying to stream. It crashes for me when loading many giga files, so I can't even attempt to stream. On the ones that work, they work fine.. although the CPU usage is much higher than Gigastudio..
If you're mainly concerned with streaming large samples, I'd still say Giga is the better choice (for now.. ) If it's just an added bonus, then it works, but it still has some troubles, which will hopefully be fixed in further updates.

It depends on two things:
First, what do you mean by large samples, large multisampled instruments, or just large single samples? I personaly don't own any giga's, so my only experiance is with Kontakt format instruments. I have loaded multiple, upto 400meg instruments with no problems in DFD mode. I have even exceded my actual memory (512mb) when using the standard sampler, with no problems. When using large single samples, loops for instance, I also have had no problems in any of the sampling modes, up to 800meg. Secondly, what OS do you run? I understand that Mac users have had problems with the latest v1.2 update and the DFD addition, I understand that PC users have had much less problems. Personaly I run on Windows XP under FL Studio with no problems so far. Simon. the only problem i have had with kontakt and large giga samples is that it doesnt translate the keyswitch information correctly - therefore rendering all the keyswitch layers invisible
But ive never had any problems with playing the top layer! Still dont install gigasampler if you want to use your computer for much else other then gigasampler It alters the system kernel (or something like that) and this causes all sorts of instabilities with other programs Thats been my experience anyway

With a 250 MB piano, DFD worked fine for me in Kontakt.

Bardstown Imperial Grand piano is what I am thinking as a large file to load into Kontakt.
I have a P4, 2.5Gz 512RAM.....Windows ME at the moment but that could change to XP shortly. dano

I have loaded 2.5 gigs of samples into Kontakt, and I had no problems...
however, I have heard complaints about the keyswitching.

I have never had any problems runningn any other program on my GigaStudio computer. It does not alter the kernal, but it does use kernal level programming in order to get better performance than any VSTi could provide. I choose not to run other programs at the same time that I run GigaStudio, but others run it along with a sequencer with no problem. You take a hit on performance and can easily cause poping when runing programs along side Gigastudio, but it should not crash your computer. Robert
