Hi Crew,
I have been obsessing over late 1970s early 1980s Prince tunes as of late. I noticed a scene in Purple Rain where they were jamming on a Linn 9000 Drum machine... and it dawned on me that that must be the source for all his rhythm tracks (just check out ANY track on 1999 or Purple Rain to hear how good it sounds)... Which leads me to my question: what VSTi drum machine has the best LinnDrum Linn 9000 kit. I have Attack, but the Linn, I believe, was sample-based synthesis, which points me to something like the Steiberg LM or 008. I see there are several kits available... but all kits, AND drum machines, are not created equal Any Linn heads out there with some opinions?

I believe there's a Linn kit for the 008 in the User Forums...

whyterabbyt,
Yeah, there are actually a bunch out there! Tre groovy. I did a little digging and discovered that there are like 10 different Linn drum machines out there. Do you have a favorite 9000 kit for the 008?

It wasn't a Linn 9000... It was actually a Linn LM-1 (the very first Linn machine). It's funny cause when you hear the LM-1 soundset, it's like - every Prince record ever made in the 80s!!! Supposedely, he still has his original LM-1 under a glass case in his studio.

Kenn,
Damn! Thanks for the info!!! So I am looking for an LM-1 kit, eh? Well... let me re-phrase my question in light of this new info... What drum machines have the best LM-1 kit available? Luv BBJ

I'm not a great user of 'drum machine' samples, Im afraid. I prefer to use either synthetic sounds, acoustic drumkit samples, or processed-to-hell 'other' samples so I cant really give an opinion, Im afraid....

nBeat,
I am VERY interested, especially in your LM-1 kit (what a great forum this is! ). I would turn it into a drum machine kit for your favorite VSTi drum machine in return for the favor (unless you have done that already). Just let me know what I can do you in return! If you have an FTP, I would be happy to download it. I certainly don't want to put you out, so if it is a pain to send to me, no worries. Just let me know what works best. Heck, if you know of a good sample CD to cull the Linn samples from, I would happy to buy it!

Your LM-1 kit is on it's way (check your mail).
No need to give any kits back. I have virtually every drummachine sound in my collection (Me bragging? No...

nBeat, are these different than the samples that are included in the dr-008 soundbanks?
| nBeat | Posted: 14th April 2003 08:31 | |
I really don't know. The samples are taken from a double-cd called Dance Megadrums
An excellent cd with 90 drummachines from the 70's and 80's.

You can grab these:
http://www.raapie.nl/patches.htm They are Reason song files with the Linndrum and Linn9000 samples embedded. You have to render each sample to wav however to get them out of Reason- kind of a pain. I had found the Linndrum set of samples from that musicmachines site a long time ago, but the open highhat sample has a glitch in it, so I went looking for another version and found these.

Thanks for the link! Thanks to everyone who posted, especially nBeat, I now have enough samples to hook up several Linn Kits (the LM-1, 9000, etc). When I do, I will make sure they are posted here for the peoples ASAP. Peace and Luv from Chocolate City, USA -Blackbelt Jones....

Tek, Those links are gold! Thank you sooooo much! Avene has a treasure trove of goodies! I think I may take the best of every kit to make my ultra "Prince 1981" kit. When I am done, you can best be sure I'll share it with all. Thanks again! Cheers, BBJ

You're very welcome Mr.Jones.I'm looking forward to your kits.Any chance of getting Linplug RMIII or RMF kits?
| Blackbelt Jones | Posted: 14th April 2003 13:37 | |
Tek,
It looks like I am picking up the 008 this weekend, and I am likely to do my LinnDrum Prince 1981 kit as an 008 kit. However, I could do it as a RMF kit via one of their freebie drum machines, no? If that is the case, you can certainly have it! Prince-Power is ment to be shared by ALL, me thinks.... -BBJ |
