Next week will be the 1 year anniversary of the first release of Crystal.
That first version was pretty popular, but there have been 9 major updates in the past 12 months, so it's come a long way since then. To celebrate this birthday, I'd like to sponsor a patch contest. I'll give a copy of something I think would be an excellent complement to Crystal in anyone's rig: a copy of Spectrasonics Stylus or Trilogy (your choice), worth somewhere around US$300, to the winner. To enter, mail me a .fxp or .fxb file with your submission(s). Send me as many entries as you like, but if you want to send a bunch at once, send them as a .fxb file. I'll be the final judge, but I may post submissions for comments from Crystal users to help me judge the best patch. The deadline for submissions is May 10. If you're looking for information about how to create Crystal patches, see the tutorials and the user guide at http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/userguide.html If you have questions about creating Crystal patches, join the Crystal users group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crystal-users Post your questions there and I'd be glad to answer them. Good luck, and I hope to see some great patches! - Glenn glenn@greenoak.com

Glenn : You give us the chance to use one of the best VSTi's ever for free and now we can also win a Spectrasonics product because we're using it? This sounds CRAZY to me Thanks Glenn and Spectrum.

Spectrum has generously offered to donate the first place prize which
I had intended to purchase. That means I can offer a second place prize. It should be more modest than Trilogy or Stylus, and, like Trilogy and Stylus, it should be something which complements Crystal. Any suggestions?

Glenn,
I've decided that your totally insane. You have made a really great synth for free, and now you want to spend your own money to get people to use it? This is just crazy! Any of the LinPlug stuff might make for a cool combo though...
| fitch | Posted: 27th April 2003 13:11 | |
for better or for worse i just submitted my crystal patches..
glenn they are all .pst/logic format... and i could see no way to make a bank of them.. so they are separate.. 26 of them.. a little fitchy alphabet patch soup

Sounds like a good comp!! I've been hangin' out to get Stylus for a while but am too poor. I've never used Crystal but I'll start learning today. BTW, I've heard patches in the past made with copyrighted samples (eg EMU ones)... Is that breaking the rules?? Should it all be synthesis or can you use waves? I think I'll stick to straight synthesis..

Nice competition!! Glenn - you are da man!!
Definitely a motivation for me to start tweaking crystal, which i admit i have not done very much. How about 2nd place gets a copy of Rhino . . . hehehe

Thanks Glenn, and Happy Birthday Crystal.
Now you're really forcing me to programme this fantastic synth (one of my favorite). I recommend to all my DAW students, They love it so I'll try get them to join efforts for the competition. I was wondering, If I'm not totaly wrong, Crystal can load soundfont's can't it (as ocsilators). Why don't you have a second prize that has something to do with that (a sound font maker, or something, oh I don't really know And can we use different soundfonts for our patch making Otherwise Linplugs or Rhino, anything. Nothing is already great. And that's the price of Crystal. Why can't the second place be a special edition Crystal with his photo all over it. That would be scary Well done anyway, and Thanks again! I'm no good at making patches so I won't be entering but I just wanted to say this is the coolest thing I've seen here at this site. Not only have you created a really wonderful synth but now you offer to give another really excellent plugin away at your expense. you rock man...I wish you the best.

Last call. I'll accept patches on Sunday, but then it's over. So send me your Crystal patches. I'm looking for patches that are distinctive and inspiring and the winner will get Trilogy or Stylus.

Just to let you know, I'm still deliberating. There were some great entries, so I want to listen carefully to all of them. I should have a winner in the next day or so.

Thanks to everybody who submitted entries to the Crystal
first birthday patch contest. I was looking for patches which were both distinctive and inspiring. I can honestly say that every entry sounded fresh and made me want to start working on a new song. However, you all made it very difficult to choose a winner! Congratulations to Jose Luis Iguarbe, the first place winner for his patch "Titanic". Second place honors go to Jon Shapiro for his entry, "Zendrone". You can download these two patches on the patches page at http://www.greenoak.com/crystal Thanks again to everybody who participated. - Glenn
