Can anyone point me in the direction of a (preferrably) freebie VSTi that does the evolving textures/pads thing?

Many thanks Smile

NOTHING, not even Absynth (as far as I'm concerned) beats Crystal. You will never need another 'evolver' ever again - though you might find it hard to spend money on a commercial VSTi after this... Very Happy

Like the others have said, if you're looking for evolving textures, you can't beat Crystal.

Never claimed it sounded like other synths - could you quote it please? Surprised In fact, I could hardly find a single synth that can exactly reproduce the sound of another synth.

I merely addressed the 'evolver' part of the question, and the capabilities Crystal offers.

...and I like being fanatic about Crystal. It's so exceedingly rare in life to find something of such superior quality that's being offered for free out of the goodness of the developer's heart - it reminds me of the old days when people did kind things just for the heck of it. Besides, true fanatics rarely put smileys at the end of their mad raving - but maybe a sense of humor is getting to be of short supply as well... If you're looking for a darker kind of pad, you should check out Morpheus as well.

you can get some evolving sounds out of synth 1 - its not just for dance music

sun ra is for those experimental pieces IMHO
and not really in the same boat with absynth or artphase at all
I've been 'playing' it a bit lately (which consists mostly of loading wav files into it and twiddling knobs) and I'm leaning towards making loops out of what it does.
