You deffinetly should try the reFX claw. It's free, follow the links on the quick instrument links.

the best one ive come across is Reaktors '333'. it dont look that snazzy but does the job to a tee in my opinion.

ReFX Claw is OK, but the best I know so far is Tau Pro by Muon.

Think that makes 303 threads on this topic. Wink

Strange how much love an ill-conceived silver box can generate.

Hey, give the guy a break, the first thing he said is that he's new to all of this. How's he to know that this comes up week after week after week.....? Besides, it could have been worse, he could have asked if Fruityloops is any good, that's how you start a proper flamewar!! If it helps, Darren, none of the aformentioned synths come even close to a real 303........oh shit here we go again Very Happy

No harm intended. Personally I use Triangle 2 as my loosely-defined 303 emulator, because I know it well, and find it easy to automate. Not saying that'll be a solution. Smile

Yep. Can I just toss in the traditional 'but 303s vary so much because they were so shoddily made' comment. Wink

Have you ever noticed how these 303 clones never sound anything remotely resembling real Theremins?

*politely and with no hint of kittens* He could have used the search, where he might learn something that could be missed by a slightly jaded response here *looks a swinging door behind Dave* Smile

Rest assured there are no good 303 clones. However, there are some good 303 clones. I guess it depends on whom you ask.

Jesus, his Father and the Holy Ghost use VSTis exclusively. Tau (also Tau Pro and the forthcoming Tau Pro 2) Claw/Beast and Triangle II are all in heavy use by the Terrific Trio.

Allah and his prophet Mohammed will use nothing but sample libraries, so that they can keep as close to their own original 303 as possible. Interestingly enough, there is a trinity of 303 owners who swear by this sample library.

Buddha is Recycling in the corner, while the wildcard mother earth goddess is dancing naked in a forest around a Creakbox. If you can hear the sound of Buzzing, ignore it. It is Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies.

EDIT: you think I'm joking, don't you? This is holy war territory. Welcome to KvR. For your third post, you should head over to Hosts and disparage FL Studio.

Or, hey, here's an idea, you could try inventing a whole new classic sound of your own Smile

Hehe. Sure, new sounds are great, but there's nothing wrong for looking for the "perfect" 303 clone. New music is based on old music and it's fine to work and rework the familiar.

The great thing about the 303 is that it got tortured beyond its intended use. Maybe eventually someone clever will do something nutty and unexpected with a VSTi. Until then, I think it's perfectly reasonable to want a 303 clone.

It's hard to make something new. It's even harder to get people to listen to something new.

If someone is looking for something particular.. then this is the poopiest thing you can tell them (aside from the figure it out yourself crap).... at least imo..

anyways.. I think both fruity and orion have built in monophonic 303-like synths that have slides in them... if not already mentioned, you may want to download a demo and see if its your cup of tea.

try muon tau.. a big part of that original 303 sound comes from its step sequencer and how the slides and envelopes work and I think tau does this pretty well in normal sequencer environment.. try setting basic note length to 32grid (while maintaining 16step sequence grid) stretch and overlap the notes you want to slide, this should get you some nice results:" ta ta tauuu ta ta tauuu" , get the idea? (yeah I'm totally losing it). Laughing

Personally I've noticed that the best acid sounds (to my ear) are not necessarily original 303 at all, just a clever combination of analogue synth and distortion.. bad quality distortion effect can ruin even the real 303 sound..

just my 2 cents..

Personally I use Proppellerheads Rebirth 2.0 when I want a 303 bass line, it emulates the "press random keys and see how it sounds" technique quite well. Very Happy Only problem is that it does not work as a VSTi, I have to create short loops and then import them in to FLstudio.

I really want an acurate 303 vst, with the shit sequencer and all, not for any good musical reason, just 'cause I want one! Very Happy

(I'm currently trying to reproduce the sequencer in Reaktor 4, It's not going well.)

Simon.

Why do we all answer this question again and again (mee, too). Perhaps we should just have posted "Darren, this question has been asked about one million times. Please use the search fnction of the forum. You'll get billion of answers within seconds."

I saw this a while ago and have decided to reply after all.

I believe my vst instrument/ sample cd is easily the best sounding 303 emulator there is. You can use the modulation wheel to control a real 303 filter (as many as 99 samples per preset) make up the filter.

Not as flexible as a full digital vst instrument, but really sounds 100% analogue. It all depends what matters most to you.

Sealed, just had a look at your enlightenting website, very interesting. Do I have to have a sampler to use this CD, sorry if that's a dumb question, I didn't read the website in full!

No, it's a stand alone vst instrument with control of filter, decay, release , glide and now has unison mode(up to 16 voices) for very fat bass lines or massive mc202 pwm detuned sounds. Cpu usage is very light indeed.

Also available for halion.

Download the mp3's to get an idea of the sound quality.

cheers

sealed,

your 303 klone looks very nice... congrat for the hard work!

now here are my questions:
* does the gui of the vst version look like the real thing?
* does it have midi learn?
* can i move glide / decay etc with halion?
* is there an integrated sequencer?
sealed
Posted: 20th May 2003 09:28
the gui of the vst version has improved - also because it is a jpeg on the web, it basically looks awful, even the colours are wrong. I assume that's what you meant.

midi learn - not at the moment, but I can customise the controllers if you want me to.

halion version has glide decay, no distortion

no sequencer, sorry.

The vsti is only a front end for the sample cd allowing modwheel access to the filter at the moment. It does have unison and distortion as well. Think of the vsti as a free add on with the (9000) samples.

Going to to my tai chi class now, so it will be a while for any further replies

cheers.
