I'm very new to the world of VSTs, and I'm hoping someone could help me out with this. I really love abrasive acid noises and synth hooks in tracks, but at the moment all I have are samples. Does anybody have suggestions as to which VST is worth checkin out, or are there any FX that can help in the process?
I already know about JunoX2, but I'm looking for something a little more gritty. Thanks! M<>< http://www.djmook.com

Hi,
Welcome! You could try reFx Claw. I think Triangle I/Triangle II might be good for these types of sound but I don't really use them. You can find all of these in the Quick Instrument Links, and you should be able to find links to download all of these. Ian

welcome from here as well.
synth 1 and the presets from audiowhore and others have some good stuff in there, and they are also free as the above list

Hrmm...
My latest track (which is going to get a v1.1 soon) makes extensive use of Linplug FreeAlpha to get down and dirty. You might want to give that a try. Synth1 and Triangle II are pretty good for abrasive sounds as well. All three are freeware. If you already have samples, though, you should take a look at a couple of inexpensive VSTis -- Dash daAlfa2K and Linplug CronoX. Both are at Version 2, and both let you import your own waveforms and play with them. The CronoX may be more to your taste, as it has a few more filters and options on it and can create a rougher sound than the super-smooth daAlfa2K, but both are worth a look, IMHO. As Krim suggested, though, Proper FX are a necessity, and I'm abusing Super CamelPhat 2 these days. There's a CamelPhat Free unit that includes compression and distortion, too, if you want to try it first. -David, hoping that will get you started.

Azeta is very nice indeed.. also check out Liqih's FatMachine - there's quite a meaty distortion built into it Also Odo's A-Sine is good for those sounds - check out the recent thread about Kick Me Too for the link (and it's free)

Distortion can be a nice way to dirty things up but it also has the effect of softening the edges & making synths blend too much in a mix (it does, after all, have the effect of bringing the sound closer to being white noise). You'll get more percussive transients & a harsher edge if you can pull it off without distortion (or at least not too much).
One of the harshest, most abrasive synths I've ever heard - be it hardware OR software - is Swarm (it sounds like the old Defender video game). Z3ta+'s another good one.

for acid, tau is still a good choice through a decent distortion.

Try out Impulse from Bojo too.... used to be the free version was fully functional in mono, and worth the price for poly - it screams when you turn up the overdrive and has a lovely teeth-grating self-oscillation when in 12dB/Oct filter mode but retains the bass content well. Synth1 does a good sync lead sound also. |
