To my surprise I was the first person to put a review up for Cube.

There are several very happy people using it and it would be nice to read their comments. I left out a lot, like formants, being able to have a talking synth 'ala FS1R, and I'm sure, a lot more.

So go up there and show some love.

I'm still an Absynth fan, Crystal 2.3 is making me think of it as a completely different instrument much like Rhino 1.1 has, and it too is a digital synth of great merit. So is z3ta+ although it is in a class of it's own imo. But so is Cube.

I know, I'm cheerleading but I think in overall terms this is the VSTi to measure against in terms of interface, sound quality, flexibility and customer service.

Writing the review was like rediscovering it today. Smile

I love the CUBE a lot! I wish I had time to write more patches for it, but I might possibly do some when I start writing my next book which will concentrate on soft synths. Very Happy

I just got the Cube today and so far my review would be pretty simple.

"Toss out the rest of your hardware and software. I was right to sell my Kawai K5000, Fizmo, FS1r, and Nord Lead 3 hardware, and now all my other VST software will probably just sit in the corner and feel neglected. WOW!"

It doesn't seem to make a dent in my CPU either, but maybe that's because I decided to quite working on my laptop and am using an Intel Xeon 2.80 GHz with Terratec's DMX6fire. Very Happy I have all I need in life, the CUBE and Tracktion. I'm ready to go -- straight into outer space, I think.

The Cube is mighty Laughing but in my testing I've found some unlikely synths that work very well with it and would not be one's first choice...

Rhino - it's like Cube's bad brother, it's grittier, it's not cute but it has attitude and since it's part of the (digital) family in the end they get along well.

Crystal 2.3 - again, unlikely digital cousins. I was using Crystal and thinking, boy, I could really use Cube for 'this' part and 'that' segment.

My beloved Absynth is almost neglected.

And you'd think the first thing you'd go for would be some warmer sounds like Pentagon or z3ta or maybe some wild analog stuff like Oddity but nope, I'm groovin on those three above right now.

Actually I'm thinking the perfect partner for Cube is Space Synth. The combination of the two can be definitely outer space or at least outta here! Cool

The Cube is pretty freaking awesome, but it doesn't sync to my Cubase SX tempo. It ALMOST does... but drifts slowly... It's a bit too slow.

yeah I noticed it wasn't working in the first version but I guess it didn't bother me as much as the drifting tempo...

Don't mean to rain on the picnic but so far I've had nothing but trouble with Cube.

First of all, the 1.01 version shuts down Logic 5.5.1 whenever I try to load it. So...I reinstalled the original version and it worked BUT, I can't open up more than 1 instance without the sounds becoming all distorted and noisy. It is not a CPU issue at all, just a poorly built plugin I'm afraid. I had a similar problem with Discovery and killed that one off my system. Looks like Cube will go the same direction.

Its a shame, it does sound good, but there is no substitution for poor development in the guts.

Hi Chermik,
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with the CUBE. Are you using this as a VSTi, or as an Audio Unit? I have not used Logic on OSX all that much, but I am sure that Harry over at VirSyn can certainly help you out. They are on vacation @ this moment, but they shall be back by next week.
I would suggest this first. Please try reducing the amount of partials on your CUBE patch to see if that clears up the distortion.
Also, what is your system configuration? Let me know and I'll see if I can offer up any ideas/solutions.

Hello,

I am using it as a VSTi in Logic 5.5.1 on an AMD +1700 machine. Please note that the problem doesn't occur until I open more than one instance of Cube. The first instance plays fine. The second I open another instance, everything goes to hell. Reducing the partials definitely helps but I have to reduce them all to 4 to get the clipping to stop and by that time the sounds are greatly compromized.

If you can fix this, I would be very grateful. I really like the sound of Cube. I have about 80 other VSTis on my system that do not have this problem.

Well, even with one instance you still can have 8 Cube Sounds at once. I'm not a Logic User, but does it help if you chose different outputs for the parts and/or instances?

While I think of it, is there a Virsyn forum anywhere. Id love to here peoples tips on programming the Cube. Only checked a few patches last night, but one of them is the most humanly vocal Ive heard on any synth(excluding speech syntheisers)

Personally, I would love something like this. The Cube is already my favorite synth, and I'm ready to start a whole new cycle of songs using just it (well, maybe a bit of Space Synth and a few natural sounds like rain and thunder and wind). But the Cube is my main man!

So you're saying that I could open it as a Multi Channel? Darn, I wish I was by my home system now because I know you're right. Have to wait the whole day now. Freakin' work always gets in the way of my hobby. Crying or Very sad

Anybody on Logic open it as a MC? Is that the answer?

I could open a Cube Yahoogroup, it can be used as online forum and mailing list as well and we would have a file area to share patches. But since I'm already the founder of 3 and moderator of one group I'd need a little help to run another one. Would one of you like to be moderator?

What's involved in moderating a Yahoo group? I've never been a moderator, but might be willing to help.

It's taking care of spammers and ppl. who posting illegal links. Sometimes you have to calm down discussions when ppl. get personal and using insulting words. Welcoming/taking care of new user...

It's not that difficult, you just have to monitor all trafic at least once a day...

Since spammer mostly spam almost all groups at once it's good to have a little help. While as long as the group is small there'll probably no spam at all...

I just created the group, still needs some finetuning, like some initial settings a picture and a nice welcoming message...

How about making that forum a general Virsyn thing. I emailed Virsn the other day about setting up a forum at Yahoo, just to make sure they dont have anyting against it. I asked if they were interested in giving some more info on themselves and future directions. Theyre on hols at the mo but said theyd get back to me Smile

Posted: 10th July 2003 03:51
I'm not sure if it'd be a wise thing to make it a general VirSyn Forum since lots of users might only interested in one of the synths and might be annoyed getting lots of post about something they don't own.
I doubt VirSyn has problems with a forum since a strong and helpfull user base is the best support a synth can get and means less work for VirSyn as well...

Okay, I'll volunteer to be a moderator. PM me with details of what I should do.

By the way, I do think this should just be for the Cube and not all products. The products are sufficiently different that I think it would be annoying to read about products you don't own!

Hi guys,
If I might just pop in my two cents.....why not make a forum here @ KvR? There is already a forum for most of the popular programs.
Ben, is this possible?

Good Idea, since other than on a mailing list you don't get messages you're not interested in. The mailing list can still be interesting for specific stuff like patch exchange...

Don't be so shure.I found out that a lot of older Athlon boards have been disabling SSE in hidden bios,I found out when I ran CPUZ and checked.Luckily for me someone wrote a customized beta bios for the ECSK7S5A that enables SSE,so now I can run Cube trouble free and with reasonable CPU usage.
Summa
Posted: 10th July 2003 12:49
The Cube standalone version creates a file named SysInfo.txt, what can be opened with a text editor like for instance notepad. If SSE is supported by the system the file should contain the following line "CPU Support SSE : YES"...
