AuthorTopic: A rather cool idea...

Hello folks, here's a rather cool idea I've had...

It is a very common case scenario that your favourite VSTi are taking up too much CPU time to generate those wonderful and complex sounds in the polyphony numbers that you want.

Now imagine a little software tool which loads up VSTi and automatically generates samples of the sounds on the HD. You specify the key-range or the keys to be sampled, the number of velocity layers for each key, the duration of each sample etc... and the software internally generates pure WAVs ready to be inserted in your favourite sampler.

Playing back samples usually taxes your CPU much less than most other synthesis techniques do. So, you can use this tool to create lightweight versions of your favourite patches to use just before the final mixdown, in which case you can replace the sounds with the real thing. It is of course possible to go through this process manually, but it can take a substantially higher amount of time (and frustration) than having the whole thing done automatically for you.

This idea will not work equally well for any type of sounds... long and evolving pads for example cannot be easily replicated this way, and you lose the automation of the original VSTi etc... but other sounds, such as basses, leads and many many more, can be (almost) perfectly replicated with this method. And even if the result is not 100% true to the original, just remember that this is a way to keep the CPU usage down, you can always revert back to the real thing when you are ready for mixing. You could literally save tons of CPU power with this.

Taking the idea even further, the software could directly export the result to common sound formats like soundfont/halion/kontakt.

Frankly, I think this can turn out to be an amazing concept if done right. There is only one problem... who's gonna make it come true? Smile

You do your converting in the standalone, and then use them in your choice of sampler,Topaz.

not an ideal sittuation taking things offline, but better than nothing I guess

Link-Devine-Machine: Could you make us this?

http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=241040

Of course it would have to actually host the VSTi

I have created sample sets for some VST presets by hand. Will this do velocity settings as well?

Chainer does support velocity settings, though basic

Sounds like a lot of work to achieve something relatively simple. Why not solo that instrument and render it out? Then just load it back in as audio. No muckin' about and it will work perfectly. In ORION, you can even choose to render each channel or instrument out as a separate .wav which makes the process even easier to do for multiple parts.
