Anyone know of a really good bass guitar soundfont, commercial or otherwise? Ideally electric rather than acoustic... cheers.

There might be something you like here:

http://www.sonicimplants.com/Products/guitarsandbass.htm

There are mp3 demos also..

Sonic Implants are pretty well known for their commercial soundfonts...the quality is usually good and the price low-medium

They have Fender Precision Bass(Pick and Fingers) and Rickenbacker Pick Bass

Actually, played with that a lot. It's not bad, but somehow I just can't get it to sound clear in a mix, always feels muffled. May be me.

Try the Ns bass, from the same people that did that huge drumkit;

http://www.naturalstudio.co.uk/

tis free. Very Happy

Personally I lurve the basses in the Sonuc reality bass collection - not soundfonts though and cost a few bob, but you get loads of good sounds.

cheers - download NS bass now, MP3s sounded good.

I notice the author suggests a short stereo reverb on the bass to make it sound "even more realistic". I've always been reluctant to put reverb on a bass as CM said it can make it sound too "full" (wrong word I know) and may overwhelm the mix. Do you put reverb on bass guitar?

I agree with donkos ... almost.

Modern sound almost compels people to have a kit with kick, snare and bass bang in the middle, with the kick and bass dry as dust, with maybe a tiny little something on the snares or hats.

If this is your point of view ... well fine.

But if the bass line in a tune doesn't need to be the central repetitive loop fixture it has become in the last 10 years, then why not try a tad of reverb ... especially on acoustic basses.

It won't deliver quite the same thud-thud presence, but it can sound warmer.

It might also sound more "live".

Hammersound has over 60! bass guitar SF2's. Surely you'll find some to
your liking there:

As for reverb on bass: PEW!! Shocked My mixes sound muddy
enough already!! Surprised

Cheers......CL Embarassed

Yes the Boobass needs efx to sound right in a mix, but it sounds much better than VB-1 Laughing I user Revalver to eq and slightly distort it and that usually perks it up some. Its not without fault though...

Okay, I'm not a bass connossieur by any means, and I have no idea if this particular bass would be considered any good by those who are. But I am very fond of "My Bass 3," the free soundfont. I don't know what the technical term for it is, but I think of it as a "whappin' bass." A catchy whappin' bass with real personality. I just love it.

Seems to me this bass is in the Magic bank, but it's also in something else because I've got a "Magic My Bass 3" and a "My Bass 3" from soundfonts I pulled out of banks when I was doing my massive download/EXSC conversion thing (resulting in over 6,000 instruments). I may have stuck the "Magic" on myself when I was using a file renamer to tag the bank-extractions en masse. Just look for "My Bass 3."

What kind of bass are you looking for? I have a Fender Precision just sitting here. I suppose I could sample it and turn it into a soundfont... Chainer does that, I think.

Any particular sound you're craving? My tendency is to just plug the bass in direct with no effect on it at all.

Download the Strativar, it's free!!!!!!, and tweak the bass guitar setting or I could send you the .sfx file when you get it. I think the bass is fabulously close to a great old Fender. Unfortunately I can't remember where I got it. Does anyone know?

That Rickenbacker Pick Bass soundfont is great. I've heard others, but this one nails it. Started playing really fast ascending Foxton lines immediately Very Happy . I know it's a taste thing, but I've never understood why more bass players never used them (even occasionally). The sound is so distinctive. I'm also a sucker for the Sonic Implants Hofner soundfont. Yeah I know, Macca, but if you're getting weird with a bass line or just want a more melodious tone it's nice to have around.

Have you tried eq'ing it. If I can get a bass close to what I want, I can usually get it right by using eq.

anyone got any comments about the ntonyx sf's?

Not a soundfont, but reFX PlastiCZ has monster low-end... You might check it out.

As for soundfonts. I've got a BassMachine soundfont that has several synth basses, but a good electric bass sound called "Stones Bass".

Email me if you want it...

There is an incredible electric bass soundfont on the Net called AssortedBass (search on Google, I forget where I found it, maybe hammersound?). It contains one multisample set called (I think) Rick Drake. I own a fair amount of commercial bass samples, but I find myself using the Rick Drake sound the majority of time I write something.

I'm always looking for great sounds, perhaps we should start a KVR community to share soundfonts with each other when we are looking for a specific sound (as opposed for digging for them; compared to a site with tons of soundfonts -- which are rare -- we would only have personally recommended good/great ones)?

Wow! - thanks for all the replies, everyone.

Good point about eq with boobass, but the damn thing STILL ain't doing it for me. It's a shame, cos it could have been just what I wanted in FL.

The Hoffner bass soundfont is cool though, and I bought it... Very Happy

Would love to receive soundfonts by email, thanks a lot for the offer guys, email address imminent. I think a "cool soundfonts" ongoing topic would be a great idea, maybe even split by type of sound... who's for starting one?

A lot of people will say that Boobass sounds good on it's own but not in a mix, and EQing is good, and adjusting the low/mid/high on the plugin work too. a little tip I've used is to put a Blood Overdrive on it to give it some oomph.

SRF,

How about you starting it? I'd cetainly want to participate, but I'm spread a little thin lately.

sounds good. I've been looking for good bass fonts, too. still using an Ibanez Bass soundfont that I downloaded from Hammersound years ago. it's got a bit of fret buzz and a good twang

the CM finger bass (not soundfont, but free if you buy the mag) for cm-404 is another favourite of mine

a soundfont recommendation site sounds like a good idea. how about starting with a soundfont message board. I could set up a phpbb and find a free host for it (the board, not the fonts) if need be

About that V-fingers bass, I only get 2 octaves out of it. Is it me or is it just 2-octaves. I like the sound. It and Stratavarious are my current favorite bass guitar VSTi's.

LOL good to hear you got some use out of that.. I am 90% sure the SF you are talking about is one I made about - maybe 3-4 years ago. Around 5 mb as I recall? Its actually pretty decent considering I had no clue how to use vienna at the time, didn't loop it whatsoever, and recorded it through the mic in of my sb live value! Very Happy Very Happy I also recall it has some small tuning problems, but that should be easily fixable if you are handy in vienna.

I always wanted to make a better version, fully chromatically sampled, etc etc. but sampling is somewhat tedious and I never got around to it. I do still have that Ibanez bass though and it still sounds great Smile

3.842 kB - no layers - year 1999 - you made that? well this is my chance to thank you Smile sure it has a few rough edges, but it is one of a very few fonts that survived on my hard drive. never mind how it was recorded, plenty more noise where that came from Wink still works for me

Yes, no layers and like 3.9 mb. I believe I called it Janzen_Ibanez. You're welcome, glad you found it useful Smile
