According to timespace.com: "Plugsound FREE on Computer Music July issue- An exclusive free version of Plugsound is out now on the cover CD of Computer Music magazine - your chance to try out some of the selected sounds from the Plugsound Box. Also in the same issue is their review of Plugsound Box."

I just saw the July issue and there was no mention of it. Did they mean August or did I miss it?

It's quite good, too..

I have a gripe with the samples though... actually the freeted instruments, in particular the Dobro and Spanish Guitar. They are very clean an realistic, etc. But the samples are hammer-ons! You can't do a decent strum, or even much of a solo....

A hammer-on is an effect which, true, is common in the spanish tradition (as elsewhere). But I don't see it used on every note in the Segovia I've looked at!! I was really enthusiastic when I saw it, but just can't use it!

Back to SoloString!!!

July's (61) just turned up in my neck of the woods (NE OH)... so it probably won't be until mid-August till I see 62 )-:

Hey Mighty, have you or anyone else tried getting CM by subscription? It sounds like a mag I should be getting on a regular basis, but I can't find it anywhere, not even at Borders.
I did buy one once at Guitar Center but that is a bit of a drive and it's a hit or miss proposition as to whether they'll have it.
So anyone, have you tried getting it by subscription? and if so, how did it work out?, also seems like it would be cheaper. Thanks Smile

I have SERIOUSLY thought about getting a subscription........only problem for us, it works out to be pretty expensive, and I usually only "want" certain things.
I have been buying them last year from Barnes and Noble, and they come out to about 14.95$ usd.....I have even made an oversea's call to get one.
I know what I want for christmas now. Embarassed

I've subscribed to CM almost since its beginning. I got tired of stalking the shelves at B&N and Borders. Haven't regretted it. While I probably wouldn't have bought every issue that CM puts out over the last several years, I certainly have enjoyed most of them. I think the subscription cost works out to about $8.50 an issue. (I may be off on this calculation, but it does beat the $12.95 they are charging in stores). Plus it does arrive several weeks before it hits the magazine shops here.

I've _refused_ to call (or to snail-mail) Future Publishing to subscribe. Rather, I have done it all using email. It was kind of rocky at first (they wrongly subscribed me to Computer Arts Surprised ), but they were quick to make it right and I have no complaints.

According to their own advertisment in CM, it can all be done online now with greater ease. I think I saw the web site posted above.

In short, I think if you'd normally pick up 7-8 CM mags over a year at the newstand, it's just as cost-effective to subscribe. My two cents!

I subscribe, but admit to not reading every issue v closely.

I collect their cds and look at the collection every 6 months and go on a mega-install session.

But there's never anything in there that's ever gone into a tune. Don't ask me why.

If I didn't have KvR I'd be more keen.

I guess I'm a lukewarm subscriber.

I subscribe... I definitely enjoy it, but... (this is now turning to a review of CM) :

I find the reviews to be a bit inflated. Seemingly they're all 8s, 9s and 10s. Plus I wonder about the very tight relationship between the advertisers and the products being reviewed. How did a monthly column on Project5 happen RIGHT AFTER the product was released?? Are there that many users of it already??? (Or is this advertisement).

Anyway, a few rants aside, I always enjoy it every month.

I'm thinking about moving to its sister publication (Future Music) because it seems to be more advanced... and I am getting better at this stuff! Smile

Oh yeah, and to make this post more on topic: I'm a US subscriber and I received August's issue last week.

I doubt that you'll find Future Music any more enlightening than CM really....it's at about the same level, and it's published by the same people...the reviews are much the same - i.e. they reckon everything is very good and is always a 9/10 !!?? And some of their demos on the CD of gear is close to laughable...i.e. they might make a jazz/fusion track with a 303 clone, or simply put reverb on a drum loop to show you what an FX unit can do....not often very useful. If you want to learn new things, go for Sound on Sound....I always find something in there that is new to me. Some of it is pitched at a high level...but that's got to be good,no?
Instead of telling you a synth is "a banging tripped out acid-head's dream with lots of flashing lights and knobs that, like, do things to the sound" SoS will tell you how many dB/Oct the filters are...how many mod sourc/dest options there are, how you route the FX, which bugs are going to catch you out etc. And they'll tell you how to solder your own jack leads too, more often than not.
