Okay, I'm looking for a (or possibly some) bass synths that would be great for generating bass sounds to be used in some hip hop tracks. Basically, I'm looking for something that has the sound of an actual bass guitar (maybe even upright) or maybe the bass sounds from the Fender Rhodes. If you've heard Pete Rock or (for a recent example) Get By by Talib Kweli, then you know the type of sound I'm looking for. Tried using sine waves, but they just sounded artifical. So, if any of you guys can recommend a great VST or suggest a way for me to whip my sine waves into something of this nature, I'd really appreciate it.

yeah definitely sample based is the way to go..i haven't heard even one bad word about trilogy so if you've got the dough that's the way to go...

or you could buy the brilliant Jeskola XS-1 and load some soundfonts into it

Sonic Implants would be a good starting point for soundfonts

just get trilogy and you have MORE than you ever dreamed of!! the sound is marvelous, and the option to layer two different basssounds is THAT nice! i guess 99% of all cult-bass-sounds are in trilogy..

i'm pretty sure it's bass samples on kweli's get by, but not terribly realistic ones. i use one of the sampletank free electric basses for this type of sound, compressed and eqed etc. you could also try some of the many bass soundfonts knocking around.

the problem with sine waves is they are too pure and they don't have any 'pluck noise'. a filtered sawtooth would be a better start, followed by lots of compression and some light/medium overdrive from some sort of tube device.

I'm a bassist, and I always found SimSynth patches to be warm and fat, quite similar to the real thing.

I do remember a free Synthedit based VSTi called V-Fingers (or something) that didn't sound bad at all

Capable of generating very warm and dirty tones.

definitely download sampletank free and the "old 4 string" sound before you do anything else.
there are also some good upright bass soundfonts on hammersound.

I can't tell you guys how thankful I am for the help, mehn. I've searched all over the net and posted on a lot of forums and I couldn't even get a peep. I've considered Trilogy, but, don't have the dough, nor the hard drive space or RAM. Might end up getting it eventually, unless I can find something better in the meantime. A friend of mine's actually has the Bass Collection for Sampletank, but it seems like all the basses sound the same, and not very authentic. Could I be wrong? If I am, please correct me. Anyway, thanks again. If you guys have any more info, please keep contributing.

I can say the only problem that I have with VST's is that there are so many that it's hard to go through all of them. This really helps to narrow my search.

Okay, one of you guys mentioned the "old 4 string" sound for Sampletank and another one of you guys mentioned V-Fingers. Can I find these on this site of will I have to use google? I tried the instrument list to no avail, that is why i ask.

not sure where to find V-Fingers (never really looked for it before), but you can go to www.sampletank.com to the "download" section and download SampleTank Free along with 20 different free sounds for it (including the bass one)
