AuthorTopic: Carbon - new synth in FM magazine
Armadillo
Posted: 19th July 2003 12:28
Carbon - a cutdown version of Reaktor session One comes free with Future music magazine and it is quite brilliant I must say. Sounds a bit like Crystal 2. So far I just been presetbrowsing - there's over 300 of them Surprised , so just doing that takes hours. Worth buying the magazine for even if you don't read it Very Happy

It has 4 oscillators and a noiselator, 8 types of filter, chorus, delay and distortion, eq, 2 envelopes and 2 LFO's. Phew!!

It'd have to be worth buying for, why else would anyone buy FM? Surely not to read it.

kind of gives you a tiny idea of what reaktor4 is like.

the most under-rated monster imho.

right! and with reaktor4 (or sessions) you get carbons big brother - kaleidon!

Both Carbon and Kaleidon are both very good ensembles Cool

To get Carbon for the price of a magazine is pretty generous IMO Shocked Smile

Why would anyone pay for the magazine for a synth that sounds 'a bit like Crystal'? Just download Crystal and forget about an FM purchase.

It's not as powerful as Crystal, but I like its sound a little better the more I play with it.

It is well worth £5 - some wicked sounds but a word of warning - some of the patches eat up a lot of CPU!!!

I like Carbon - some very nice presets and good first impression - but I haven't really been able to get into it cos I'm having all sorts of trouble with it....

Is it just me? Anyone else having trouble?

Specifically - it doesn't seem to remember the bank/patch selected when I save and then reload a song in either Cubasis v4 or FLStudio... Confused

Also been gettingnasty access violation crashes in Cubasis and FL if I save a song with the Carbon GUI open and the patch/bank manager side panel open (opened by clicking the little snapshot camera button).... then when I reload the side panel is open but showing an empty bank (when the other patch selector menu shows a bank is loaded) and clicking anything in the side panel causes an access violation.... Confused

Can someone confirm if this is happening to them as well cos I'm going nuts here - posted on CM/FM forum and emailed FM but no reply so far - and I dunno if it's just my system being shit. Sad

Also - FL sends some MIDI reset messages whenever you stop or start playback (e.g. MIDI message for All notes off). A couple of these messages seem to be RPNs but sent on MIDI CC 100 and 101 - which Carbon responds to by altering the volume on osc.s 1,2 and 3 - which is fairly annoying as you have to workaround it with a MIDI out generator and automate the osc. voumes... Rolling Eyes

so all in all - very nice sounds - looks like fun and a nice synth - but I've found it a MAJOR pain the arse. Hopefully it's just my system being screwy and everyone else's works fine... Confused

dunk

I have the full Reaktor 4, but my Carbon only has about 112 presets. I've been robbed!

Note to self: never, ever buy "complete collection" product bundle again. The download time for updates, new patches and presets, and extras will kill you. Shocked

Seriously though did FM add on extra presets? I can't seem to find any extras on the NI website.

You know a soft synth is too complicated when it has a 3d game as an instrument. Check it out:

That's interesting...I'm having the same problem in FL with Hydra. Wonder if the problems are related somehow...

Yes, it comes with 112 presets. FM/ electronic garden has created 200 patches which are included on the other CD. They are not as complex as the NI presets though, but still useable.

I think Future Publishing are being a bit tight to be quite honest. Surely the Carbon freebie belongs on CM's discs and not Future Music - after all CM is dedicated to computer music users whereas FM is more general.

Of course, if you want Carbon you have to buy FM as well...that's another £5 thanks. They should really make up their minds and dedicate CM to VST demos and freebies , leaving good audio demos and remixes to FM. Otherwise they should simply merge the magazines.

That said, I like the sound of Carbon so I'll be a mug too and buy FM!

Well, FM's sales must be down the last couple of months compared to CM so they put it on FM's CD. No doubt if CM's sales had been a bit low then they would have put it on CM's CD this month. In my opinion, which should not be taken as the undisputed truth, this is Future Publishing's sales balancing act - frankly i think FM is redundant these days and should be scrapped and CM expanded to a decent size (ie. like SOS) with decent sized (and non-cribbed) reviews.

whats the point of VSTi devopers like albino advertising in FM or CM when the magazine give away similar product for free?

Fuck me. Really?. And on the internet as well. Rolling Eyes The world's just not what it was....

do you know what I think? Get over it you guys....

Who cares who's giving it away? As long as I find out then fair play to 'em. If the developers have a problem with it, then they need to get out more, or develop better products.

I love free stuff, give it to me now!!!! Well I know it's not free, but £5 for a decent synth with a free bog roll attached, what a bargain.

Thanks.

I'm also having the same problem with carbon and FL Studio. It doesn't remember patches/banks when you save a song with carbon. It hasn't crashes on me though.
Some presets eat a hell lot of CPU.
Some presets are very nice.

@dunk: saving is possible. You have to do it over the snapshot function.

i've editted my post to appear less as fact and more as speculation on my part, as i know everyone here takes what i say as the gospel truth and it is after all just my opinion (which is not necessarily the truth even if it appears on the internet). i still think FM is a redundant rag though Laughing

Sad oh man.... I feel a total chump cos I can't figure this out.

Cheers for the confirmation Trekstar, but I jsut can't figure out what's going on - I load up the FL tune I'm messing with with Carbon in it - making sure that "Allow program editing" is enabled in the FL wrapper GUI. Then I select the "Bouncing Dit" patch (patch/snapshot number 8 in the bank that starts "1-Bluebottle","2-Zarkov","3-Avon") and save the song.

However, when I reload the song, Carbon loads up a totally different bank and the patch "CH Come Take me Two" (patch/snapshot number 5 in the bank that start "1-Nautic", "2-PAD Carbon Two", "3-CH When White is Yellow") is selected!

Now, AFAIC if I select a patch and it plays okay, then saving the song and reopening it should open the same patch... right? Have I missed something here?

This is even happening in Cubasis v.4 - A different bank to the one that I had selected when I saved is being loaded up... Confused

Any help greatly appreciated Crying or Very sad arg... this is driving me nuts cos I really wanna use this plugin!

regards,
dunk

Reaktor doesn't seem to recall your settings as per a normal plug-in. If you want it to remember the settings you were using you have to save the instrument as a new ensemble (the files aren't large). Your settings will then be recalled on reloading your song Smile .

(Note that that's how it works with the full Reaktor 4 version, so I'm not sure if it works with the Carbon demo).

for once I want to buy future music, I can't find it anywhere!

why doesn't NI just put a free download of carbon on their website? that would reach a much larger audience...

uh.. by the way... is there still somewhere I can download carbon? Very Happy

Don't think so. It was on the keys.de magazine website, but it has been taken down. I believe Crying or Very sad

As for my problem, the standalone works fine, but I can't get Logic 4.8 (PC) to recognise the VSTi. It's in there with all the others, but no joy at all. Any ideas most welcomed! Wink
