AuthorTopic: A Line-6 Variax Modification

Not really a DXi or Vst, but....

Here are a few pic's of my modified Variax, now able to use The Roland VG-88, GR-33, GI-20 etc etc and so on... The right switch is a GK2a kill switch. The left switch allows midi program changes, and the added pot (in the center) is the volume for the Gk2a pickup...

Enjoy!

Mikey

Wouldnt, or couldnt Phaedo? Wink

Really no biggy- you just have to be careful with the drilling, and electronics arnt that difficult to install... And, it opens up a whole nother area of use now for the guitar... Of course I agree, if you not into that 13 pin playing softsynths with the guitar midi thing, it's not worth the trouble involved.... I am, and so it was...

MIDI guitar is something I'd like to get into, but I'm not sure I want to perform radical surgery as a first stop... Surprised

Thanks guys for the kind words...

I have uploaded 2 small mp3's, to show you how she sounds...

A Variax modeled D28 acoustic (played thru a Vetta 2 using a modified "Identical Twins" patch), and VG-88 Organ (played thru the VG-88 ), played at the same time with one guitar.... Only DAW effect used was a fade at the start and end.

A little slide diddy, from the VG-88 only, played with the Variax thru the gk2a hex pup...

Enjoy! Smile

Something bothers me: shouldn't it be possible to just take an output from the Variax's transducer?

Yes, on a normal guitar with normal pickups you could. The Variax is anything but normal in this dept, and it requires a "stereo" cable with one side of it used for the power of the active electronics inside. So- the power/audio cable "has" to be there, and since its pickup free there is no induced voltage for the gk interface to pick signal off of. I tried going from the output wires of the Variax and directly into the audio input of the VG-88 with it (thru the gk interface) and could not get a sound, so- there has to be something done to the audio from inside the switch/power box that comes with the Variax is all I can figure... Since the Variax has to have the power/audio cable anyway for operation, I just run two cables and consider it no biggy... Smile

Now, I may be talking crap here (it wouldn't be the first time Smile ) but as I understand it, there's a perfectly good hexaphonic pickup on the Variax, but their wiring doesn't allow you to create an out for it. Is that right?
