Hey people,

Can you guys give some recommendations for sounds/instruments/percussion/fx, suitable for today's modern techno/rock sound? I'm prepared to spend some money but if there's some freebies, point to those for me as well. Thanks!

How about a list of bands you wish to sound like for starters?

:p

you know damon edge, of chrome (who?) engineering genius. 'alien soundtracks' 1978? pinned for 'acid punk..' heavy rock grooves with layers of god knows what processed over it. well if you knew it you'd understand. engineering/synthesis/art is sort of like being a magician.. hats don't come with rabbits in them, you have to figure out how to make it look like you're pulling one out.

is techno rock some thing you can buy at the store when you are on the way to your mommy's house so that you can sound like her band?

get what you can, then use it. i totally recommend synthedit.

If you mean Industrial type stuff I think that z3ta+ does a great job. Makes nice and edgy sounds that go very well with guitars and stuff.

jeesh.... tough crowd here. LOL Smile "WTF is Techno Rock??"

hmmm.. I could be describing the genere of music wrong but the majority of music I listen to I consider it a cross between dance, techno, rock. Bands like Lincoln Park, Disturbed, etc. I like the way they mix electronic/techno type sounds into their rock music.

Anything?

Unless you are more specific, it's quite difficult to help you. I don't think there's any softsynth on the market that you can't use to make usable sounds for som sort of "techno rock", for instance.

The only thing I do know, is that you will probably need some kind of a distortion fx, as a plugin or something else. For good and "crazy" warping of your sounds, look at the Ohm Force stuff, especially Predatohm http://www.ohmforce.com

BUT: You really need to be more specific as to how you want to work with this.

If you mean Electro-Gothic, the Virus is very nice (if you don't mind the price). Icon Of Coil just released a free soundbank on Access' website.

for the chunky guitar bits a la LP-slayer plus any distortion plugs pushed to max
for the electronic side your lookin for somethin like hydra

for the drums any drum sample plug in plus the right samples

for the lyrics just edit some xoxos posts you get that vitriole in most(otherwise ignore the Nutter )

pretty much anythin should do it tho youll find the right tools as you go thru the freebies then youll have more idea what your after

and dont forget ignore xoxos except as a lyricist Evil or Very Mad

I believe Linkin Park is endorsed by Korg, so besides the turntables you'll find Triton, MS2000 and Electribes (remember this from an interview).

If you need distorted guitars get Slayer 2 by reFx.
I also like JunoX2 for some cool synth mayhem, although it's currently not for sale. A replacement called Vanguard should be out soon though. Check the reFx forums for more details. FXpansion DR-008 or NI Battery with Drumkit From Hell will do the trick for most drum duties, or go for BFD (also from FXpansion) for an all-in-one drums solution complete with grooves. All of these plugins will cost you some though. I have not personally tried BFD, but I understand it's good for acoustic rock type drums. DR-008 on the other hand will also let you create various electronic drumsounds.
