Console, all the way. You want DXis in your host? This is the only plug that can "wrap" them for VST only hosts! What about VST plugs for your DX host? You like modular patching? Don't want to spend alot? Why buy both a VST-DX wrapper and EnergyXT, when console can do both wrapping and modular patching for one low price. Damn! did I mention that it can automate any plug-in with MIDI? This is what I like to call my swiss army knife of a plug.

EnergyXT is alright, but jeez this baby can do so much for us Acid/Sonar users!

bout time for the count then rob?

at the end of that you could make a nice neat poll of the top 10 and we could vote and see who wins.then the winning company could be contacted and asked if they would like to give the winning vsti as a prize in some sort of competition (seperate from the cafe comp) worth a try eh?

VirSyn TERA 2.

Everything I liked about the original TERA is still there along with multi stage envelopes, a strong spectral synth and tons of flexibility in a much improved UI. I usually love the really new technology synths and thought Chameleon or CUBE would have been my pick until TERA 2 came out

The CS80v is the best recreation of a classic synth yet. It wants CPU and RAM though. The Arpeggiator has bugs. The sound exploration is infinite and high quality. You need the best monitors or headphones to hear the difference. The Ring Modulator is faithful to the original and is the best on the market. Other RM's just sound crap when compared to this baby's. The little initial velocity pitch bend pot is a hidden one and makes analog sound organic just like Vangelis's sound. This is the Vangelis instrument. The stereo sound is good. The chorus and tremolo is lovely and noisy (lush) just like the orginal. Wow i can't leave it alone.

While I am without a doubt impressed by such vintage emulations as Moog Modular V, CS-80V and impOSCar, I have to consider innovation as another factor for my vote. Of all the VSTi's released in 2003, I think the one that really sticks out in my mind and deserving of this award is Rhino, Big Tick's masterpiece. Not only does it sound fantastic, but it's also extremely versatile and powerful. Perfect (or near anyways) emulations of old synths are awesome, but you could almost say that it was the original designers some 15+ years ago who are the ones that did the *real* creative work in developing them. Therefore, I feel more inclined to reward the innovative developer, rather than the emulative, no matter how accurate they are.

-Tronam

PS: MicroTonic is a close second for me. So much fun!
