AuthorTopic: Adder - Additive Wavetable synth
Concretefx
Posted: 12th December 2003 11:58
Hi there

We have released Adder, our PC VSTi additive wavetable synthesizer. Adder uses additive, wavetable/shaping, subtractive & FM synthesis to create an enormous range of sounds.

Click for bigger

Features of Adder :

Adder uses 32 partials, each partial can use one of four different waveforms. Sine/saw/triangle and square waves are initially built in but you can use any small sample as a waveform (300 waveforms are supplied with Adder for your use).

Partials - each partial has it's own volume, harmonic, tuning , FM & phase settings, and each belongs to one of eight volume and pitch group. These groups are use in the modulation matrix so partials can have different volume, pitch & FM envelopes / LFOs etc

Samples - Adder's built in sample loader allows to load in any short 16 bit sample. Samples can be looping or single shot and can be retriggered using step sequences. A sample shaper allows filtering, reversing, distortion etc .. of any of the samples.

Filters - two 12/24 low/high/band pass/band reject + ring mod or comb filters. Each partial can be sent to either or both of these filters. These filters have built-in distortion and waveshaping and can be use in serial or in parallel

Fat Mode - in this the first sixteen partials are doubled and detuned so to create fatter sounds. Combined with stereo widening this creates much bigger sounds

Playing Modes - Adder can work in poly , mono or legato mode.

Modulators - Adder has eight envelopes, step sequences and LFO's. Envelope can have up-to 32 stage, each stage having variable slopes. Each envelope has user-definable loop & release points for complex patterns.

Modulation matrix - a powerful modulation matrix allows you to modulate all the controls using envelopes , LFO's , step sequences, any midi controls ,velocity, note played and in/out volume.

Effects - Cross delay, chorus/flanger, 3 band equalizer and compressor effects.

Adder comes with 160 presets (more to follow) and manual in pdf format

Here are two short examples of Adder in action (all the sounds are either made using Adder or samples which have been altered by Adder) , http://www.concretefx.com/Adderdemo1.mp3 and http://www.concretefx.com/Adderdemo2.mp3

Adder is available for $70/Euro60/£40, a time-limited demo version can be download at http://www.concretefx.com/AdderDemo.zip

If there is any problems, you've found any bugs or have any ideas for any improvements , send us a message either here or at mail@concretefx.com

Cheers

Shit! Shit!

Great GUI, very clear.
Is it heavy on the CPU (no time to test it out at the moment) ?

Hi there

Thanks about the GUI, about CPU usage, it all depends on the patch. I've been testing it on 1GHZ machine and it can play a reasonable number of notes on most patches

Thanks for the reply, i will try it out on my
lightning-fast Duron 1,3 next week.
If this sounds nearly as good as it looks...bought.
That GUI is the best laid out ive seen to date on a synth...hope your others get a similar one (i like Ethereal, but the GUI is to big).

Hi there

Hope you have fun with it

About the Ethereal GUI, I'll probably change it (I've change Industry and Granite already so it's the next in line)

It crashes Cubase SX 2.01 and Chainer 1.03 on my PC ( AMD 2400+, 512 MB )!!! Any Suggestions?

Hi there

Weird, how far did you get with it ?

In Chainer, for instance, could Chainer see it when you scanned the plugin directory? , did it managed to load in ?

Cheers

Crashes here too in Orion Platinum 5.00 & Cubase SX 2.0.1

Cubase SX crashes right after I insert Adder in the instrumentrack in an empty project.

In Orion Plat. I´m able to open Adder but it won´t make any sound. When I try to close Orion it hangs.

Hi there

Are you using windows 98 or XP ?

I'm using Win XP Pro with SP1. It crashes while loading. The result is that I'm not able to check it out. In general my PC runs absolutely stable, even with Reaktor! I've rebooted the system after installing the demo, but it's the same as before.

Hi there

Hmm, I'll have a look into this. You didn't move the dll from the installation directory, this might have caused a crach

Win XP Home Edition.... and nothing moved.

Just a note -- I tried the demo in Chainer 1.03 with XP Pro and it works fine. However, everyone's computer is different to some degree, so who knows what the problem is. I have two computers with the same sound card in each. Norton Internet Security 2004 (NIS 2004) causes distortion in one, but not the other. I hope you can find a solution. I couldn't in my above example and I gave up after two miserable weeks. I have NIS 2004 on one computer, and BlackICE on the other.

I´ve tried installing the demo twice and it only installs the pdf manual and the unintallation program. wierd! Am running XP Home.

Looks interesting though and good price. Hope I can get a working demo soon.

It install just fine here in Win2k...

BTW, make sure you get into the other banks! I didn't realize its potential until I got past the first bank of sounds. This thing is pretty cool...

Hi there

This is quite weird, why it crashes some computers and works perfectly in other , Hmm Confused

I'll go through the code tonight and see if there is any obvious problems and hopefully release a new version soon

Poorman - you say it installed only the pdf manual and uninstall, it did install either the adder.dll into your select install directory or the wave directories in the same path ?

Cheers

Nice work fella (and a nice price).

Tried assigning some CCs via matrix e.g. CCs 5,9, 16 and 21 to Filter 1 or 2 cutoff....nothing happens when I widdle me knob.

Am I missing something ?

Hi there

In the modulation matrix there are three parts the control (filter freq in this case) , the modulator (midi cc ) and the amount of modulation . In order there for the cc control to have any effect the modulation amount has to be non-zero, try setting to 100% .

Also the modulation matrix doesn't actually effect the dials or sliders position in the GUI , this is because it takes in that control value and multiplies by / adds the modulator value (midi cc). It's something I'll have to have a look at , so it has more visual feedback

Cheers

works fine for me in orion plat
win 2000
average most patches with a five note chord on my amd 2500 16-21 cpu use.
getting over to the fm matrix and fiddling there, cpu really takes off.
overall first impression, I like this very much.
dammit.

Hi there

Yes fm is a bit intensive at the moment (needs more working on I think)

I'm also thinking about having proper samples in Adder, with modulatable loop points (see how this goes)

I'm going to use the basic engine I've made for Adder for the next synths. These are going to be at the moment , PhaseD - a 4 osc phase distortion / waveshaping synth similar to the Casio CZ synths and Monster - a big 6 mod FM synth (I'm very into 80's digital synths at the moment)

Cheers

I installed it both times into the default directories. I've manually checked my vst directories and don't see it there, and I've just done a search for the dll on all directories and it hasn't shown up. Mysterious.

when I installed, I manually changed it to install to my plugin directory.
no problems here in cubase 5.1 or orion; and fl studio.

Works for me under SONAR 2.1 (and SONAR 3) with VST Adapter 4.4.

Which adapter version are you using?

Hi there

There is a new version of the demo out at http://www.concretefx.com/AdderDemo.zip

In this I'v fixed a couple of bugs that may have caused problems with some peoples host, any feedback about this would be great (I tried in Muzys and it seems to works ok)

About the lost dll , if you re-install it , it should create a folder called Adder which contains AdderDemo.dll and a wave directory in the install directory. So if you set the install directory to c:\vstplugins\ then there should be a file c:\vstplugins\Adder\AdderDemo.dll

Hope this has been helpful

Cheers

Yep! The latest demo is installing to C:Adder regardless of where its told to install – but from there can be easily dragged into the plugin directory in the mean time.

Hi there

That's weird, I've just tested the installer and it install Adder in the selected installer directory on mine system. Are other people having this problem with the installer ?
