AuthorTopic: Anyone else dangerously addicted to buying VSTi's ?

My credit card seems to be permanently nailed to my PC at the moment Help

I haven't even explored the A-1 and CS-40 that came with Cubase 5 yet - but I'm still buying these things on a regular basis.

z3ta+, Rhino, Cameleon, SampleTank 2 - you name it, I've either bought it or downloaded it !

I'm a doctor so I understand the pathology of addiction and obsession/compulsion - but can anyone recommend a good psychiatrist.....

Sorry, you're screwed like the rest of us! Very Happy

Actually if you weren't a doctor I would say that your credit card would be getting maxed out soon and then you would be searching for the free stuff instead.

On another note, it might be a good idea to pace yourself. Find out more of what you like so that you don't clutter yourself up with a bunch of software that you don't really use. It can happen! Confused

Hi BC,

Kvr if free and yet one of the expensive websites
to visit regularly Laughing

I too thought I was developing an addiction but with
some rational thought the habit can be broken
Wink

Aim to learn the ones you have inside out and exploit
them to the max , how many do you have that you have
just scratched the surface with before moving on
to the next shiney new thing ?
Tell yourself "no more untill the above is accomplished" and from that excercise you will also learn what area of sound production your setup may be missing and know what you NEED rather than what
you WANT Wink

TOO many VST's could become counter productive
to making music , "THE EMPORERS NEW CLOTHES"
didn't he have that many it took him all day to
decide which ones to wear Question

Also the more you have = more updates and upgrades
to contend with , I have purchased more upgrades
this year than anything else .

The internet makes things so easy to make an impulsive purchase , would it be the same if
you had to travel 10 miles to get your fix ?

When you feel a purchase coming on say "STOP"
and put it off for two weeks and then see if
it is just as compeling Wink

now if you would all like to contribute a little
£$£$£ donation for the help I have just given
so I can get the Tera 2 upgrade + Cameleon + Rhino
etc it would be greatly appreciated Razz

please give generously Laughing

ebay = evil Evil or Very Mad

I've gotten myself into trouble there. Shocked Laughing

Actually I'm bidding on a couple VST's right now! Hope they don't go over my $20 limit.

I've got a solution for ya. A true magic cure, works like a charm: umeployment.
Sure, it takes some time to kick in. But when you realy (I mean totally) run out money, your'e free.

(If anyone needs guidance, I'll be happy to provide it, for a fee. I accept payment in either cash, food or VSTi)

How about setting a target ?

Say, produce a double concept album using Neon, LM9 and Cheezemachine ONLY.

Lock all my other VSTi's away in a password-protected folder (a password typed blindly).

I think this might work...... Very Happy

maybe you're simply not being critical enough. mention any synth and you can find someone on this forum who's not impressed with it.
open to the reasons one might be disappointed by any given synth.
gui's too hard to see/use, too big, too small, wrong color, too many knobs, too few knobs
too hard to program
too many thin sounds
too many thick sounds
sounds like everything else
eats up the cpus

that last one works for me. but that means actually using them to make a song or two and finding out there's no headroom left on the cpu meter.

yep now i've licked my vst habit and gone back to buying music books. use a single instance of sfz with a piano soundfont and spend some time practicing.

Hmm, I think I managed to ovecome my own addiction this weekend, by d/l'ing the demo of Cameleon and not being as impressed as I hoped. I kind of winced as I downloaded as I thought it would definitely end with me reaching for my credit card, but hurray, I was pretty disappointed. No doubt this is as a result me being a tone deaf twat with not enough cpu but hey, I'm glad I tried it and glad I didn't buy it......anyway, when's Vanguard gonna be released.... Yes, that's usually me. The last VSTi I bought was PlastiCZ! and that was more than a year ago. it is also the most expensive VST plugin I have ever bought. Mind you, since then I've downloaded two freebies that are still in my VST folder [Iblit and PolyIblit] and I have built 7 of my own in SynthEdit, although I only really use 2 or 3 of those myself. These days a synth has got to be way over the top [and actually good] to interest me in the slightest because I have a sonic arsenal that I could only have dreamed about 3 or 4 years ago.

side note: bones, your SE synths are excellent; which 2 or 3 of them are *you* using?

how about setting a simple goal -- either produce just one song per vsti purchase, or just one bank of presets. as simple and obvious as that sounds, i guarentee it will curb your spending habit quickly.

in general, i sympathize with bones negativity. a few of the freebies are commercial quality. a ton of the for sale synths are equal or less than the best of the freebies. In genral, i find that here at kvr, cost is *inversely* proportional to value. So if you are planning to buy, select only the cream of the crop (usually the most expensive, but for good reason). Finally, listen to the presets -- they say more about a synth than an arm long feature list.
