My understanding [and I could be wrong] is that HYDRA was to be the next version of JUNGLIST but grew into something sufficiently different to be given a new identity. I assume what this means in practical terms is that Rich couldn't make the new synth backwards-compatible with the old. i.e. He couldn't get JUNGLIST patches to work in Hydra. The 3-op FM stuff is certainly very different from JUNGLIST but in V/A mode it sounds very similar and all the features of JUNGLIST are present in HYDRA.

Idiots! You just keep using your krap synths and leave the good stuff for me. I don't mind at all. Seriously, I just read the Prodigy interivew from the Propellerheads site and when Liam Fucknuckle said he always uses analogue synths for bass I thought 'Wot a tosser' and I figured that he had never heard Junglist or Hydra because there ain't nothing with a bottom end to match those babys [my own spotty behind included] and with Reason he has so little choice.

I love Junglist so much for bass that I simply don't use anything else (except my bass guitar on occasion). I love Junglist so much that I have refused to update to Hydra, despite the obvious benefits and capabilities, just because Junglist is perfect for me. It is the only synth that gives me the warm, organic bottom I want for my songs. It's the only synth I like as much as my bass guitar. I LOVE JUNGLIST!!!! (Although I'm quite sure Hydra is equally nice in its own way.) Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I agree with Bones,

While its true that many Analogue synths do have a 'unique' sound when played in isolation, I believe that when heard in the mix, analogue and digital basses are almost, if not totally identical (especially with the quality VSTi's that are coming out nowadays, but then again if Mr Howlett is only usung Reas*n he probably wouldn't know this!)

I reckon alot of the 'analogue is best' is a case of the Emporor's new clothes... IMHO

I'm 100% software yet I've heard no complaints about the rattling basses I produce using Free Alpha.

When I was a hardware man my fave synth for basses was a Casio CZ101. It was/is highly recommended for basses, as was the Yamaha DX series. Both of them digital synths...

But I guess it each to their own...

My all-time hugest ever bass sound came from my lowly KORG DSS-1 sampler using its unison mode. I blew the bass bins out of a PA during a gig once with it. Mind you, it still had analogue filters, just 8-bit oscillators.

I also used my CZ-101 as a bass beast for several years and ReFX's PlastiCZ! would be another of my softsynth bass faves is it also has a big bottom.

Paul, you should upgrade to Hydra because it doesn't replace Junglist and you can have both for cheap.

I think Hydra is the best damn soft synth in the whole world... But seriously, I really like it... It sort of reminds me of Albino in that it just seems to fit in a mix well... Sounds... Hmmm, spacious... Warm echos... I think I could do a lot of stuff with just a Wasp XT, and Hydra, and drum synths... Maybe an Orion challenge! See what you can do with only three synths, including the drum machine...

...That would be interesting

That's very close to how I have been working of late. Most of the new material I've been doing fo rour next album is using a far more stripped-back sound. My favourite new track is, in fact, exactly what you're suggesting - 2 x EGOkILLER and DRUMS. And I've been removing a lot of tracks from other songs to strip them back to basics. It started as a thought for live sounds but it's starting to take over.
