AuthorTopic: 909 / 808 Question

Might sound daft, but Im after some top quality 808 and 909 samples. It seems as though these type of samples are everywhere, but Im having trouble getting some real quality 909 rides and cymbals. I have Attack, and its ok but it really aint cutting it for me right now.

Are their any libraries specialising in these type of sounds that people recommend? Again, Iv tried quite a few but they tend to be a bit ropey.

Thanks Smile

I'm more than happy with the 909 set on the LM drum machine on Cubase - I can't remember whether it's the LM4 or the LM7, but it's one of them Rolling Eyes I think you can get it cheap as a separate VSTi with the sample set. I used to have regular access to a 909 so I know what they sound like. The LM sample set isn't 100% accurate (no samples will be) but it's close enough - I've not heard better off any of the sample CDs I've tried or own.

The only other one that I use for 909 drums is E-phonics drumatic (which is a freebie) which is slightly less accurate, but gives you more versatility and control - it has alot of the in-yer-face quality of the 909s and gets close to some of the 808 sounds when tweaked.

Well, Drumatic is in no way an accurate emulation of the 909 or 808... none of the sounds are really identical... but more 'ish'
It's closer to an 808 then the 909...
I'm thinking of creating a really accurate 808... but that's just an idea...

hi!

maybe itīs obvious, but maybe you should look for a sample cd Smile

i have a sample-cd from masterbits(masterBEAT - PRO-Library 3900) and it has many 808 and 909 samples.

the website is: www.masterbits.com

i know there are thousands of other good collections of drum samples, even for free.
but i know this cd has top quality samples Very Happy

Really?........ Maybe it's just pure luck that your plugins are so good then Wink Seriously - the kick, rim and clap seem like pretty good 909 ones to me - the hats maybe sound a bit more CR78 (or whatever its number was). Maybe you can make an MS20 emulation.....then I can add a CS40 to my E-phonics collection Very Happy

I've done some try-out's a while ago... specially focussing on the kick and snare:

808 clone mp3

Note that the hihats are plain samples...

thats not a bad snare clone there E! I have my 2.5" work speakers though so I can't compare the kick to my 808 at home...

Smile I've been comparing all settings of the snare with a real one... it comes pretty close ~99%.
My version is a bit punchier... but the way 'tone' and 'snappy' control react is really very idential.

This all is done by wavetable synthesis... not just plain samples (like Rebith), but high-quality pre-rendered oscillators and noise (and none of them are sampled from a real 808, but custom made) ... Otherwise only the noise would need 6 SynthEdit filters to exactly match the 808 snare noise... so, too big CPU!
As you can hear in the mp3, doing it this way doesn't make it sound like a sample, the snare varies every hit.

And, this approach still makes it possible to tweak the sounds beyond the capabilties of the real thing.
(i.e. longer decay times for the snare, pitch, ect)

Maybe i'll start working on it again! Very Happy

...wizoo electronic drums (akai-format) - 30,00€.
various 808 & 909 kits with many variations - there won't be much libraries to beat their quality if you're looking for these drummachines....

wasn't there an ultra cool dash ensemble for reaktor users that had multi outs and all specifically dedicated to 909? that should be available on the willk reaktor cd yes? there are so many sample based choices for these archaic drum machines anyway, i mean there's literally dozens of alternatives. maybe even novation will release a software of their drumstation Laughing

Please do, if only for that snare. I love the punchy snare of the 808. The rest I could take or leave but give me a punchy, snappy snare any day of the week for my synthetic drums.

cool idea !

i mean the 808 sounds crispy / dreamy / inspirational - the 909 sounds ugly and dull.

i do like drumatic very very very much Smile

primesounds have the wizoo 808&909 sample sets available. i think it's the same that came with the LM4. they do sound very good to me, but then i've never been anywhere near a real version of either machine.
