Allegedly Q3 of 2003... somehow I think they're late...

can't wait for a virtual MS20 though Smile

anyone heard anything on the grapevine of possible release dates or beta testing etc?

I'm sure they'll announce Q3 2004 now at NAMM! Razz Wink

Actually, I'm starting to doubt they'll see the light of day with them mentioning they want to put a 'hardware dongle' in the form of a PCI card. True? Not true? Unsure. But we're in Q1 2004, and we still have nothing certainly tells me something. They're probably a little gunshy with Oasys not exactly being a 'stellar seller'.

what? PCI dongle?! Surely that would rule out all the laptop and powerbook users (unless they do PCMCIA dongle too...)? Doesn't sound like a good business plan unless they're assuming that serious musicians only use desktop DAWs... don't get me started on that one...

Evil or Very Mad

Hope they do see the light of day. They went to the trouble of making a 5minute video and demo track so it would be a shame if they scrap it..

for what I remember, the demo video was an iTunes-visual effects rip off with some ms20 pics in there.. HiHi
..and the audio demos prolly were made with an original machine..

pci dongle? haha..

I can´t help thinking that Korg has no clue how to deal with the native software-market

..they should release a new ms-20 hardware.. Wink

I'm completely unfamiliar with the MS20, but DASHsignature's EVE uses several MS20 waveforms in it's soundsets. Maybe you can try the demo to see if it helps make the wait for Korg a little more bearable. Smile

You can find a real MS20 for around $500 and most of the ones i've seen on ads were sold with a Midi to Cv converter.

why to bother about a PCi dongle a C/R or whatever or an uber-cool algorythm which is supposed to recreate the VCo or VCF instability and which will saturate your cpu?

Get yourself the real thing, you won't regret it and the friends visiting your studio will ecstasiate on the look of your gear. You'll even be able to burn your Ms20 if you patch it wrong
Very Happy . Why to ask for more?

hey thats cool.. Smile is it just a dongle though? ..or will it do some of the audio processing as well?

I hope they dont overprice the thing like other hardware devs have with their hardware/software combos..

If they really end up making these things prohibitively expensive, then I'll likely just buy another MS2000R and X-Phraze. The last thing I want is a PCI DSP card that Korg decides to no longer support and develop device drivers for. A reasonable price and a USB dongle doesn't really bother me that much, but I certainly don't relish the idea of Korg writing device drivers for Windows. Scared

Maybe they will license someone that knows how to market soft synths. I'm thinking of the Moog Modular - althought it's not a license. I think Bob Moog just approved it. Do you think Korg would be so generous...ok, forget it.

True, but given that it has no support for Windows past 98 or Mac OS past 9.1, how much you will get for it is a different matter.

MS20... Uhhh, what the....

Anyway, someone made a clone that even looks like one.
Take a look in the SYNTHEDIT forum or ask there.

Then get XPrase too !

Brrrr what an idea a Ferrari and a Gogo mobile... Shocked

Well, I have a real MS20... and I can't imagine using a VST version instead. The MS20 is an *okay* analogue synth on its own, but where it really shines is its modular nature, and the ability to run external sounds through its filters. As I've mentioned about a thousand times, I like doing things like playing bass guitar through a wacky patch on the MS20, and chopping up the result to make drum kits for Orion Very Happy

For those of you who have no interest in modular synthesis, there plenty of better synths already in VST format...

How much? About $200-$250. I've been eyeing one myself as all I'd need is the card and optical cables, as I have everything else and its own dedicated computer too.

If you can find it at that price, stop eyeing it and just get it. It will be $200 (or even $250) well spent. I seem to remember you have a Pulsar card? These two cards complement eachother beautifully. The Oasys has a ”cleaner” sound, but can also do some wild and whacky stuff, especially with the physical modelling (the PM alone is worth the asking price). There are also VA type synths, FM synths, tonewheel organs, reed & tine pianos plus a load of sample-based plugs (including most of the PCMdata from the Triton) and a good assortment of FX (my favourites are the sequenced filters – combine them with a delay and you’re a ”one finger wonder” HiHi ).

For a discontinued product it’s actually pretty well supported. Dan Phillips and Brandon Daniel from Korg have made some really nice synth and FX plugs that are freely available from the Oasys website and they are both active on the Oasys Yahoo board. Then there are 3rd party developers like Harm Visser (who’s done an incredible amount of work creating a huge assortment of new PM’s) and Alex Aliferis (who’s made some very nice sample-based synths). John Bowen has also made an Oasys port of his Orion synth, which is a steal at $50 (he’s programmed some pad sounds for it that are simply breathtaking).

As you’ve noticed, there are a couple of downsides to the Oasys. It doesn’t run under Win2k/XP (or OS X), but since you’re planning to put it in a separate computer, that’s already taken care of. The other thing is it’s a bit underpowered in the dsp department. Some of the most demanding multis will leave you with rather limited polyphony, but what is there is pure class. All in all, I’m sure you would be very happy with this addition .

All the 'demo' songs I've heard out of it for the PM stuff, I'm not pleased with at all. I also didn't like Tassman, because I have a HUGE library in Giga format of samples already that are TOP notch. I'm not into the tone organs and probably not into the reed and tine pianos. I also own a Korg NS5r, so I probably have most of the PCM stuff too, so it's like... hmmm.... I love my NS5r. I love the Korg sound. I just wish I could play with one first before I took the plunge, even if it's only $200-$250.

Really? Did you check these out?:

www.korg.com/oasyspci_synth_demos.htm

For plucked strings, the Oasys still beats anything I've ever heard (the basses and acoustic guitars are great) and the brass emulations aren't far behind.

You should also check out Harm's site ( www.hvsynthdesign.com ) for mp3 demos of his PM's. He's more into experimental sounds, not necessarily exact emulations of existing instruments. Weird and wonderful stuff! Very Happy

You have one I take it? Wink Harm's stuff I don't like that much, and that might be the reason why I formed my opinion on the PM stuff. The guitars do sound pretty nice. The brass is ok. I already have Dan Dean Solo Brass and Project Sam's Trombones and Horns, so I'm covered there.

I just love 'synthetic' stuff mostly. The pads on that page sounded pretty decent. I still like my NS5r, so I certainly like the Korg 'sound'. I'll probably still be wishy-washy for awhile, unless I run into some extra dough. Just spend moola on the Cubase SX2 upgrade, so making careful decisions right now...

Is there a complete patch list out there? Also, how many of the Triton sounds are there in patch form? How many combis? That's what I'm interested in.

I don’t have a patch list but I got this is from the Oasys website:

Quote:
Version 2.0 also includes 143 MB of PCM data, totaling over 3900 samples and 546 multisamples - almost all the waveforms from the Triton's internal ROM and Pianos/Classic Keyboards, Studio Essentials, and Future Loop construction PCM expansion boards!

Personally, I think the Triton PCM stuff is the least interesting part of the Oasys. It’s nice to have, but what really sets it apart are the synths and FX

PLUG:

WRT the sounds of the Korg Oasys... just about everything I write is frought with it.

Try this:

http://tinyurl.com/2fayk

Pay attention to the big washy pads... that's what I tend to use it for. If what you're hearing isn't the Oasys, it's my Yamaha EX5 piped through the Oasys.

I just sold the card, however, [sniff] ... and got about $260 for it. (I payed $450, a few years ago.)

...Back on-subject: I've also lost hope that these VSTi's will ever hit the market. And I second the notion of "fuck Korg", at this point.

Dan and others aside: they are truly great tech-support guys!

Every discussion of the Korg synths always tends to turn into a discussion of Xphraze and OASYS. Possibly because you can actually make music with them, wheras it appears that all the Korg VSTis are good for is bitching.

Although this particular discussion has been relatively short of Xphraze vs Wavestation. Wink

If they want to dongle the damn things, they should make them powercore plugs and be done with it.
