It seems like this shoul get asked all the time, but a search on this forum turned up nothing!
If you'd like to reacquaint yourself with that nasty Taurus sound from the 80's, go here and download the 3 samples they provide. I think you might be surprised at how chunky and resonant this synth really was. It pretty much defined the mid-period Genesis sound, as well as a lot of others from that era: http://www.hollowsun.com/vintage/taurus/index.html This was one of the best "bottom-end" synths of all time, and I have a little trouble believing that there are a lot of VST's that can do as well by *generating* the sound. There are some sample-based virtual instruments (like Trilogy, which includes some Taurus samples) that can probably come really close, though. So, bass-freaks, what VST can actually produce the same kind of sound as the samples I linked above??? Thanks, Green

Oh, for fuck's sake.
Now it's Taurus pedals. Is there any crappy anaolog bullshit that will not eventually be pulled out of it's fitting grave and held up as a fantastic sounding device??? Let's see...nope, can't think of anything analog that people think sucks. That was then, this is now. Now is better. Get over it. -S. P.S. No hard feeling, man. This is just the 1,000,000,000th thread along these lines. "Is there any softsynth as good as the Casio SK-1?" Prrrrrft.

Sorry but I'm with Green on this one. In the right hands (feet?) that Taurus sound gives me goose-pimples, lol. I'm sure it's got a place in plenty of musical styles even today. I recently bought Trilogy and it was a nice surprise to find the Taurus patches included. Just my 2p.

I've kept it for myself for a looooooooooong time now, audiorealism bassline isn't good enough as a 303 emulator

It's been a while since I tried the demo but I thought Artruia MMV had some pretty good Taurus patches.

You can't go wrong with Trilogy.
It has some great Taurus patches and replicates it's warmth. Great for Soul/RnB and Ballads.

mmm.......... let's see - Yep, the Jen synths were all pretty crappy, most of the Juno range were pretty ordinary, analogue tape was shite, the 606 drum machine (in fact nearly all analogue drum machines) were heinously bad apart from the 909 and some 808 sounds, CV inputs and Hz/V inputs are well rid of, Korg microsynths were inordinately bad, Stylophone? - pleased that one's consigned to the dustbin. I could go on....... Doesn't mean digital is all it could be though...

Can one ever go wrong with Polyiblit or Iblit?

That was a good suggestion. I went an octave lower than I usually try to go with PolyIBlit and got some great Taurus sounds. The key is getting the patch right. Got lots of good ones by blending random built-in patches inside Chainer. That's my favorite feature of Chainer, by the way.

Arturia MMV can do a nice Taurus (with some tweaking: their Taurus presets that shipped with it didn't do much for me).
I wouldn't be surprised if their upcoming Minimoog clone does a decent job at it too. But then, I've managed to get a decent deep rumbling Taurus-y tone out of practically any solid VA synth with good oscilators and filters with a little effort.

I've uploaded something I was messing around with the other night. I'm not sure if this is typical Taurus or not (probably could be done with many synths, maybe not). rough idea (3.6Mb) OT: disclaimer - I'm newly into all this VST stuff. I know nowt about EQ/mixing/mastering. My speakers are Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 and I've not heard anything I've done on a decent system. I'm also using a lowly Audigy (1). This is the first thing I've opened up to you people and it's a first stab. If this sounds absolutely horrible on your monitoring gear let me know. (I'm sure you will anyway, lol).

Atmosphere has a Green Taurus Bass preset that I really like.

Marko, interesting stuff, thanks for sharing. I don't think I'd call the bass part Taurus-like, tho'. More like whatever Mike Oldfield used in the original Tubular Bells... a more muted, less resonant sound.
As for the doubters in this thread, I'd say that you haven't listened to the samples I have posted. There's a reason why the Taurus sound has become almost a cliche'. Thanks for the PolyIblit suggestions, that one hadn't occurred to me. Anyone else have ideas? |
