Hi,
I'm beginning with synths (no beginner with cubase neither computer), and would like to improve. What analog synth VSTi (freeware or reasonable price) would suit me better, less considering sounds than a way to learn easily how to use it - and make it sound (When I improve, I can always turn to better sounds an more perfectionnate instruments). Moreover, if anybody knows a link that explains the theory of using an analog synth, please let me know ! Thanks, Eyal

I would suggest Synth-1 as a starter. It's free and sounds excellent in the opinion of many(myself included). Also Free Alpha from Linplug is a great analog synth.Just look in the drop-down list above-Quick Instrument Links.

Get an issue of Computer Music, and start playing with CM-101 which comes on the cover CD. You can probably find tutorials for that thing on their web site.

Click here for a pretty good in-depth overview of subtractive analog synthesis.
I second the recommendations above. Synth1 and Free Alpha are probably the best free synths out there for learning the basics, and Computer Music magazine has lots of other goodies contained within, including synths, drum machines, effects, and a fairly decent sequencer and VSTi host. That's where I started went when I got into the soft synth world. Have fun. -David

I suggest a subtractive virtual analog with two or three oscillators, one filter, two eg’s with sliders, and glide. Any of the above mentioned are good as they all are similar to this layout. Looking at the GTG Synths link above, Log Synth looks like a perfect learning synthesizer though I have never tried it. I do have FreeAlpha and Triangle II and like them very much. Once you master this layout can move to synths that also offer ring mod, distortion, and osc sync features. Stay away from FM or additive until you are comfortable with all that can be done with subtractive.
