AuthorTopic: arp2midi beta

this plug is a midi arpeggiator for driving other vsti with an arpeggio with a shuffle amount control. it outputs midi data, not sound.

this is a BETA for public testing - my host doesn't allow midi between plugs, so the purpose is to test it's functionality as a midi generating plugs in hosts that support that function.

because it is a beta for the final retail version, the feature set has been restricted -

mono mode only. no poly or note overlap, eg. no legato/glide

2 octave max. arpeggio range as opposed to 4

no phrase mode

the final release will also include a transpose function for performance, ie. a 2nd midi channel/keyboard zone can be defined to generate transpose on the fly.

please post your host and os with feedback! Smile

So far I couldn't get it to work with FL4.51 Sad

I used a configuration similar to what is done in FL when you want to use MIDI to control a VSTi. In this case, a FL MIDI Out channel is loaded and a port number is selected; then the VSTi is loaded as another channel and the same port number is selected for it. This configuration directs the MIDI events from the MIDI Out channel to the VSTi channel. That is, you "play" the MIDI Out channel and the destination VSTi produces the sound.

I'm assuming that: if arp2midi substitutes the MIDI Out channel on this configuration then it would generate a string of MIDI events in response to an input; these events should get to the VSTi in the same way as the previous MIDI Out events did.

Bottom line: nothing happens. It seems that arp2midi is not generating any MIDI out events or that they can't get to the VSTi for some reason. I tried it both with the sequencer stopped and running.

Maybe this is due to some FL way of doing things and has nothing to do with arp2midi, but I don't know. Anyone else?

BTW, I would really enjoy a creative arpeggiator that could be used inside FL, either to complement or to be used together with the FL one.

thanks for trying it! Smile

afa i can tell, it should work correctly - i did forget to mention that it will only function on midi channel 1.. maybe that's it?

Had a quick play in Orion 5.2, and it's certainly functional...

I'll play more when possible.

Cheers!

thanks for the replies! Smile

from what i can tell, the differences in implementation between hosts are making it problematic.. eg. i've heard that there might be midi echo problems with cubase 5.1, ie. the plug's output being superimposed on the input midi.. so for those of you whom it's working for aren't getting any of that? i can easily put the output on a different midi channel..

prolly release a stage 2 beta tomorrow or so with midi options and see what works.. cheers again for being the guinea pigs.

rob - corporate?? well, maybe not so much, but "hypocrite," have to plead guilty don't i.. but don't have the luxury of keeping my livelihood out of my ideals atm. i had to quit my job and i've got pretty much chance nil to get another one cos i emit a weird psychic funk or whatever, so i'm giving self-employment (in ~4 different areas) a crack until i can get a nursery watering job come summertime. i doubt i'll ever make more than $20 in my lifetime off s/w, se or otherwise, but at least if i give it a crack it's something i can add to my apps. you let me know if i ask for an unreasonable quantity.

oc the freeware will still be coming.. once we make some progress on respect for chris. to me and i think many others, freeware is about giving everyone an equal go, and as laughable as it may seem, now and then you want to see that people are picking up on the consideration aspect of it.

i hear you rurik ...

... i wasnt having a real dig you know - as you know i lean more towards pragmatism than you do and that allows for folks chaging their mind in response to circumstances ...

... sorry to hear about your lob loss and good luck with the new ventures (including the vsti stuff) ...

... iirc you said you always enjoyed the horticulture thing in the past - you though about going beyond watering duties and getting into gardening or landscaping (put some green back into that asphalt desert) ???

... tbh - like you i cant understand why people arent willing to either cough up a little cash for CK or just follow his very simple licensing conditions - were i still in the SE 'game' it wouldnt bother me AT ALL to do either - whats the problem with acknowledging the work of others ???

good luck mate

I was just on my way to give the arplite and some other plugs from you a spin here. If this little bugger does what I think it does I'll be surely touching this one a lot!

Thanks for sharing xoxos

I'll get back when I worked with it a bit

nice one xoxos, working well in tracktion
some minor ui issues, labels on top of each other (i think maybe the ui is a bit tall-and-thin for tracktion to handle).
also a free running mode (ie running without the host playing) would be nice if possible.

for a pay arp, that'd be worth more (too me at least)than the token amount you've mentioned for this, how about adding in the phrase arp and perhaps some more generative stuff, maybe a few midi_cc outputs aswell to make an uber-midi arp/generator. just a thought now you're on the corporate rollercoaster Smile

btw it's a shame others don't use the same wording you did in the about box, it's such a little thing to do, but saying thanks seems to be too much for some people

I don't know how to make the little "About" box or put it on the GUI =(. Which is why I don't use CK modules, even though they're cool. And paying is out of the question...

cheers - actually, i used to be a 'seed and seedling specialist' - 18 acre production nursery, individually responsible for all seed harvesting, propogation and care of seedlings up to ~3 months.. this includes seasonal bedding planting to about 500,000 units (that's a lot of fucking seeds to put in plug trays) and expertise with exotic species.

for all this responsibility (incl. management when the prop. manager got fed up of the bitches who owned the place and no one else would work for them) in this fucking lovely border town, i received the princely sum of $7.50 after three years in the position.

tucson.. border town.. cheap labour. employees are just dirt. i quit that job because the fucking asshole wouldn't let labourers wear sunglasses (that's a LOT of lumens coming off that white gravel watering plants et c. 40+ hours a week) *however* because i was management, he would pay for optical insurance for me to get prescription sunglasses..

so i walked out of the only professional job i'm likely to ever have. enjoyed it.. oh yeah.. i've told the story about how the managers were so evil with berating everyone even the woodpecker in the saguaro used to distinguish them from other humans and would come round and squawk at us in warning when the boss was on his way over.. some people, i tell ya.

rellik - when you compile as vsti, there is a text box right in the middle of the compile interface there -it says 'about box' above it, can't miss it dude. the about box will show up when someone right-clicks on your gui. you just type (or paste) it in there.

hengy - ta for the small gui tipoff. thought i'd licked the 'runs when clock stopped' thing.. had a look and saw what i forgot to fix, so thanks Smile

i'll def. include some cc outputs, will try some midi channel/control options in the next beta, but my tendency is to make 'multiple specialised' plugs, so eg. i'll keep this one for arps and do another one with generating stuff (package deal oc) so either app will run a bit lighter. should be back later today with #2 (hopefully the final beta?? :p)
