hi folks,
i've got some more synth updates for you.
(click on the name to download)

Motion 2.6
- beefed up the oscillators
- added a detune slider to both oscillator sections
- tweaked the sound of the filters
- improved the delay
- fixed a bug in the 1/12 lfo setting
- made minor changes to most of the current patches
- added a bunch of new patches

im working on a new audio demo for 2.6 but i havent written
anything i like for it yet.

Note: 2.6 sounds a bit different from 2.5 and will not load
patches from earlier versions. so 2.5 users will probably want
to continue to keep a copy of that around as well.

Resonance Warning: due to the filter changes, the resonance
is stronger than before, and unlike on my other synths, there
is only very minimal extreme res limiting in place. so be carefull
when working with very high resonance settings....dont blow
out your speakers or your ears! Shit!

Excellent, sir. Motion has always been one of my favorite unsung synths. I love what I can do with it, and I always come up with something unexpected but totally usable.

yeah i did.

motion is as unique as incredible as rhino is. surely the best freebie synth on the planet. alas i love logic too much. but as far as mac only stuff, your wrong there, there's nothing. oh, besides pluggo (big deal, the synths are rubbish)

I guess this would be a good place to ask this question:

Motion is cool and all, but I have a hard time actually fitting it into a composition. I know it would fit exceptionally well into more experimental stuff, but for the more mainstream stuff, I have a hard time finding a place for something like a sequencer that I can't actually fit into the composition as needed (unless it's just octaving, or playing the same note, or not using the sequencer, or something). However, I would really like to understand how to use something like Motion. If anybody has any tips, I would appreciate them =).

Meanwhile, Texture is really cool; if it didn't cause FL to freeze on some occasions as I'm opening it, then I would use it for all my gritty lead, rhythmic noise, and metally ambience needs.

here are some ways i like to think about the use of the sequencers...

pitch sequencer:
in some regards, working with the pitch sequencer is very similar to working with looped melodic samples. in both cases, you are dealing with a sound source that has its own key and rhythm. as a result, a pitch sequenced preset usually wont drop right into an existing track.

however, unlike melodic loop samples, with motion you can easily edit the sequence. so if you hear a pitch sequenced line in motion thats close to being usefull in your track, but its not quite right, you can simply change the pitch of the notes you need so that it fits into the key of your song.

another way to use the pitch sequencer is to make it your starting point for working on a new song. programming melody or bass lines in motion is very different than writing on the keyboard. you are forced to work with a different interface, a different structure, different limitations, etc. as a result, you may find that you'll stumble into ideas you would not have thought of otherwise.

also, since motion's pitch sequencer picks its notes based off of what key you are holding down, pressing another one will transpose the sequence. i have found this to be an quick and interesting way to experiment with different progressions.


filter sequencer:
i think the filter sequencer is best thought of as an lfo with a stepped waveform because, in most cases, you'd want to use it for the same purpose as you would an lfo...to get some repeating movement into your patch. but unlike on an lfo, here you can adjust the level of each individual step.

when kept simple, you can use it to add selected accents to your sound. when used more heavily, you can create rhythmic filter patterns which can also be thought of as a kind of arpeggiator for your filter.


gate sequencer:
there are a few uses for this too. one is to use it in conjunction with the pitch sequencer. by only turning on the notes you want to hear, you can be a bit more natural with your melodies and bass lines since you dont have to be stuck with always having a note playing all the time.

you can also use this sequencer to help you create choppy, trance gate type sounds.

another trick is to add some distortion with the warp effect, and crank up the sequencer's speed. this will help you create some grinding, growling sounnds.


by the way...dont forget to experiment with assigning multiple lfos to the same destination. by setting them to different waveforms and/or different speeds, you can get some very interesting and useful movement in your sounds.

sorry to hear you are having troubles with that. are any of my other synths doing the same thing or is it just a problem with texture?

i also find it interesting that it only happens occasionally. since it doesnt happen every time, i wonder what is different about the times that it does that makes it crash? please let me know if you happen to notice any sort of pattern to its crashing. that might help me track down the problem.

Thanks, ugo. Helpful tips =) I'll be sure to try using Motion as the seed for a song.

As for the problems with Texture: mostly it happens with patches that have "Metal" on them. That may just be a coincidence. Basically the problem is that the small hang I get sometimes in loading a patch is extended when my host (FL Studio) is using more resources, and there's a point at which the hang becomes basically a freeze. It's probably not something you should have to deal with; pretty minor issue, actually.
