So far I have only installed the three soundfonts from the Crystal website. Now I'd like to expand the waveform pool, but don't want to end up with hundreds of similar samples to choose from. Rather I'd like to have a few well selected high quality core samples that have character.
The soundfonts should be not too big. For example I've tried the "FluidR3 GM" soundfont, but it crashes my host when I try to load Crystal, which is - I assume - because of its size of 140 MB. Another bad example is the "Vintage Dreams Waves" soundfont that does have some good waveforms, but also loads of drums/percussion waves that I don't need in Crystal, as well as waveforms that don't differ from each other too much.

What I am looking for is
a) one rompler style (or GM style if you want so) soundfont with reasonable size (say max. 30 MB), but containing a good quality selection of typical rompler samples. They could be as well a few small soundfonts for certain categories of sound.

and
b) one soundfont with a nice selection of synth waveforms, i.e. not hundreds of saw and pulse waves, but more like the core waves of a DeltaIII or Albino.

What (preferably free) soundfonts that fit to my description would you recommend for Crystal?

hmm, good post looking for concise content. I don't want every soundfont on the web either. Dr. Wackler, I can't help you, but I too would like to know the answer to your question.....

Help - how stupid I am Crying or Very sad - thanks, Doc -
I didn't think at all about expanding Crystal this way - I have an Emu APS and it came with loads of superb soundfonts (a selection from several of their romplers)
- so to answer your question: Emu sells such soundfonts
on their website Smile

Not of a high audio standart, but the "vintage video game like" soundfonts could be fun to use (like famicom, ff or squaresoft soundfonts). The good point is that they often are kind GMish but with their very own 3.5 bit crapness that is aways nice to hear.

I've been playing with this feature, too. In fact I am considering creating a second instance of crystal (something like crystalsf.dll) so I can use it primarily for playing soundfonts. I haven't tried it yet though.

Anyway, here are some good, small, free soundfonts I have found (mostly from the hammersounds site):

K4 Analog and K4 Analog2 (excellent stuff)
IW Vintage Dreams Waves 2.0
Cadenza strings'
Chaos Bank (a 12mb GM bank, not bad)
FM Dreams Sampler (some good FM waves, often keymapped an octave or two too low)

Let me know if you find anymore. I am considering purchasing some of the Emu stuff (Proteus 1 and Orbit) -- though they are small they sound great.

Sorry Doc, I haven't got the answer to your original question but I was just thinking couldn't you use a soundfont editor to get rid of the drums in the 'FluidR3' font? I don't really use soundfonts so I am not sure if they have any form of protection on them to stop them being edited, so apologies if this doesn't work! It's a bit more work but worth the effort if you really like the sounds. Don't ask me which is a good editor though, general concensus seems to be they are all a bit crap!

Also, couldn't you use a soundfont editor alongside a wave editor and sample the synth waveforms you already have from your own VSTs? This nay at first seem a bit pointless seeing as you already have the VSTs but you could run the raw waves through all the effects and filters within Crystal for a very different sound. Obviously, there could be legal issues if you tried to release the samples (would any manufacturer be able to tell if you'd used their raw wave instead of someone elses?) but I see no problem if you are doing this from your own VSTs for your own use.
