AuthorTopic: Are UAD-1 Effects plugs better than native ones i.e Voxengo

I am thinking of getting a UAD-1 card - I have plenty of soft synths but I need some decent effects now - do I go for a UAD card or Voxengo or the Sonalkis stuff. I've heard the UAD-1 card is great ?? Anyone knows about it ??

I cant' answer for the Voxengo plugins, but I do love the UAD-1 plugs, and I do own the UAD-1 card, and there is no CPU load, which the Voxengo plugs cannot boast.

Hi

I had UAD-1 but sold it because of render/export troubles in every computer config I had (3 of them).

It sounds great tho.

What do your ears tell you? LISTEN to the sound. Idea

Perhaps get the voxengo and then upgrade my computer next year to 3.4 + Ghz ? to run them -- the uad-1 doesn't seem to be very powerful.

Yep - I'll demo the voxengo now - a lot of people think these are bloody good - as good as those grossly overpriced Waves things.... (if not better)

Both are great, some of the best plugs you can get.
Voxengo are mainly for mastering, UAD for tracking but you can use them for just about everything.

Absolutly no problem rendering UAD. Go to the UAD site and see for yourself (www.chrismilne.com/uadforums)

These plugs had a tremendous impact on the quality of my productions.

Buy both! Razz

If you had a Matrox G450 in any of those, that would explain a lot.

Very powerful? Explain.

Think of UAD as a compressor card/CPU relief. Nothing beats it in that category. (LA-2A, 1176N, Fairchild 670) PultecPro is a colored EQ and Cambridge is a Transparent EQ.

Yep, I had G550 and two other video cards. Tried them all. Two mobos, Ram, you name it.

Anyway, I don't regret selling it because I'm moving to laptop based recording, and PCI is probably on the way out. Powercore Firewire is what I'll get sooner or later.

PCI is on its way out about as fast as the P4 is in its way out, if not slower. Still way too much stuff, and not other alternatives. ISA and EISA took a LONG time to disappear until almost everything was on PCI. There is still WAY too few PCI-X or whatever else they predict the next big trend to be for it to just suddenly disappear in the next year or so.

That's the first reason. You're right about PCI, but I've heard Longhorn isn't going to support PCI - I might have heard wrong tho.

Thanks

Ya, that statement really stinks of bullshit. Wink Microsoft has always been big of supporting old hardware that's LONG dead and gone. Ever seen a SCSI floppy drive? They support it.

If you went laptop, then that's all the more reason for you to go USB2 or Firewire anyway. Can't blmae ya there! Very Happy

Actually I've my eyes (ears?) set on Tascam FW1884 or Yamaha 01x - that'd cover laptop and desktop with minimum fuss.

http://www.uaudio.com/support/software/UAD-1/technoteswin.html

Read the 7th bullet down if you'd like clarification. I get pops and clicks in my mixdown windows open or not if I bounce down to audio with the plugs activated. If I dont' use the UAD-1, I get no problems. I've had it work without clicks as well. Working on getting a G550 right now to replace my G450. I got the clicks to reduce significantly by playing with the IRQ's too. But yes, there is known issues with this card, but doesn't seem to happen on every system. I bought this card from Scot, and he had that card with a G450 as well, no problems.

Most user problems seems to relate to IRQ issues. Some motherboards are better about it than others.
If you have the odd motherboard that won't allow you to easily get the UAD-1 on it's own IRQ, you will likely experience performance problems. Most motherboards will work just fine though, with the UAD-1. If fact, I just bought a 2nd UAD-1 for my DAW and their both working great sharing the same IRQ.

It is on its own IRQ. My Pulsar is on 9, the UAD-1 is on 10, they are not sharing IRQ's with anything else. I have talked to Universal Audio tech support directly. Just like their bullet says, they claim there is problems with that specific card, which I do have. It's in their documentation. I know some have had no problems with it, I do with this specific configuration. If you don't have a G450, I rarely hear of problems.
