What FM softsynths can emulate the famous "Lately/Heavy bass" patch from the old TX81Z and DX100 Yamaha synths?

I'm absolute crap at programming FM synths, so a preset would be nice Smile

Try OXE FM-Synth from http://www.oxesoft.com. The LatelyBass is one of the presets I did...

Hi!

The FM7 from Native Instruments should do the job!

It's a TX81z preset and also known as Solid Bass for the DX100 and FB01. AFAIK it's quite common in Detroit Techno tracks...
So far I did conversions of that sound for Synth1, Cube, Tera, VAZModular, OXE-FM, FS1R, Microwave II/XT and TG77... Wink

This may sound rather stupid (I have been a hardware whore but am now starting to play with free VSTs and trying to start getting used to the interfaces and such). Anyhow I installed the OXE FM-Synth but I get no presets...they are all a genaro tone. My setup is alittle odd as I am running XP on a second partition (ME is installed on the C partition and XP on the E partition). I have a few programs that require the older crappy OS but I install all my VSTs in E. I had some problems with Synth1 having to be told where to look for the presets but I cant seem to figure out how to make OXE look...is it possable that it is hardcoded to look on C and not on other drives?

Thanks guy I'll try checking those out.

Is the Lately Bass a preset on Native Instruments FM7? A friend of mine has it so next time i'm over I will check that out...haven't had a chance to check out oxe-fm yet but I will soon (I've been surrounded by Macs lately Smile )

No, but FM7 can import the 4OP Sounds as Sysex. I did a slightly improved version of the imported sound for Summabank2.

You should find it in the KVR Banks/Patches section...

I'm pretty sure you should be able to do this one in FMheaven. I know Ces is a big TX81Z fan and he provided me with a multisample of this patch for DS404 quite some time ago.

FMheaven is sorely underrated around these parts, so go check out the new demos Smile

The latest Rhino 2 prerelease can probably do it too. Its DX7 import feature is now much better.
If you have a sysex file with "Lately Bass" I'll give it a try,

Should be included, these seem to be the default TX81 settings.

Hey,

I have an incarnation of that preset in my synth. At least, I think it is. So, is Lately Bass that short smacky subsonic thingy? Could anyone post an mp3 of the original sound?

I think someone demoed it to me back in January and I had to rebuild it from memory...

Hmmm, I've started on a short demo featuring my interpretation:

click and listen

The preset comes in during the last 8 bars, after second 39, and was a little de-smacked (XY controls all set up for shortening/stretching and filtering...). Is that anything like what we're talking about?

Thanks,

Wink Urs

@Urs

I can sent you a samples from my TX81z, just PM me and tell what you need...

@Tick

It should work if Rhino can import 4OP FM Sounds as well...

@Muon

FMHeaven can read TX81z Sysex, I think there's a version of that sound in one of the Preset Banks...

To me, FMHeaven sounds best of all. It simply sounds 'right' and has that certain roughness Cool And I say that without ever having owned a DX-type synthesizer...

Yes.... I'm a fan of FMHeaven Very Happy

Probably - I don't have the most up-to-date version here right now (only an earlier beta with the filters that Ces sent me some time ago).

I would agree, given the effort and research that went into its design, that this is definately the synth to start recreating classic DX and TX sounds with. If not, I still have the DS404 patch Very Happy

FM Sounds are usualy hard sample, since the timbre is quite velocity dependend...
It's been in the presets for some time, check Bank#11/Sound#15...

Since seeing this thread, I booted up my Atari with Dr T's 4 OP deluxe, and had a look at the Lately bass patch again. Of course I have a "real" TX81z..well...two of them if you count the TQ5 desktop module ( complete with digital clock: that is "the time" Smile

It's a stacked sound with feedback to give it the punch and a tight EG. I recreated it for the upcoming FM synth called eJ in which I am doing some presets for. A nice FM synth...he should be making an announcment in a few weeks. Thats probably all I can say Smile

Tim, I wouldn't call that stacked... Wink The feedback is not for the punch, it creates the SAWtype timbre...

Hey Summa...nice graphics there Surprised Laughing

I thought that if every OP is going into OP 1, it's a stack. and your probably right in that the feedback is creating the saw type sound. The other thing I noticed is that the elements are very velocity sensitive.

Tick: the other thing about 4 OP stuff ...that is with the TX81Z, is that it has different waveforms besides sine. ..and they are not your standard waveforms, ( like saw, triangle, ect) but certain harmonics are emphisized. So it might be a trick to write an importing scheme. Smile

@Tick

I just did a DX7 conversion of the sound, if Rhino can handle MIDI Files try the following version...

http://musik.freepage.de/summa/LatelyBassDX7.zip

Using the sine instead of the TX Waveform for operator 3 hardly changes the sound. For instance the DX100 Version of that sound called solid bass is working with sine waves only...

@Tim

ASCII Art Wink

Feedback increases the amount of all harmonics according to the operator level, so using the velocity on the feedback Operator almost sounds like controlling a filter by velocity.

Nice!
It's a very cool synth.
I've been tweaking it with WinSysex. It's a secret monster.
Now I have to check if WinSysex still works on WinXP.

Well, I've heard it on a couple of old rap tracks (Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby's Got Back, for instance), and it's on a bunch of house-tracks.
I would have to check when I'm at home.

Have you set "Key sync" on for all operators? FM7 tends to forget that setting when importing TX81z sounds...

"Key Sync" was on for all the 4 operators.
Actually, I'm quite happy with the sound. I got a rather well done sampled LatelyBass patch (sampled from the original) which sounds almost the same (apart from the fact, that you can hear velocity switches).
Perhaps, if I'd use it in some song (rather than in this 2 minute mockup) I'd probably tweak it a bit to get some more tightness, as I found it to be a bit lose on the lower notes.

I used the sound in 'Heaven' using an old FB-01. With the FB-01 you get a lot of noise for free Smile though the old & noisy sound quality also gives it some character.
