it's good to see that theres something good in there this month, but i have to say (and i may make some enemies here) that i bought one issue, and couldn't believe how sloppy it was. So many things about that magazine really wound me up - pages with completely the wrong thing written in the side columns (like they'd mixed up articles), argh this is bad that i can't think of any more specific things...

a few of the articles i read in it were interesting, but really i couldn't believe the amount of errors or just poor presentation issues in it. i hope i haven't upset anyone here by saying this but it just doesn't compare to the quality and polish of Computer Music. Maybe i'm just used to their style tho.

Also, the CD was in a really horrible format - every single item on the disc was stored in an .EXE compressed archive, and loads of shockwave stuff. I simply don't understand why they don't just store things in a normal directory structure so that you can look for files yourself. it just seems like a really poorly thought out system.

It's a bit weird, is DMM SE, because that's actually the name of the mag "Digital Music Maker Special Edition". They've got a monthly release schedule and everything. I think they're the reason CM has gone all "subject issue" recently. (Doesn't explain why SoS have taken to putting tutorials as cover designs, though.)

Anyway, I'm not going to diss them, but I'd remark that they seem to really like Cubase SX2, in much the same way as CM really likes Logic, but more so.

DMM looks quite good to me. I'm fed up of reading the same old articles repeated in Computer Music & Future Music. The DMM articles are quire simple to follow (for a relative novice like me), but it's worrying that there's so many mistakes. They seem to like giving away lots of free plugins, so I'm not complaining!

Borders in Niles, OH carries it - so I guess the other ones do too. I looked at it last month and yawned, but that may have been due to the subject on the cover. When I go in to check out CM this month, I'll probably look at DMM again.

Yeah, German magazine plugs are fine (but not as basically useful as the CM studio with its full-featured sampler) but the magazines ARE crappy - save keyboards sometimes, but Keys simply praises anything they get there hand on and the amount of useful information for e.g. mixing sums up to a max of 5 sentences per edition, the rest is pure blahbla.

timewastin, that's true. It's the reason I subscribed to CM last year (and did find there Kriminal's Orion-thing, but didn't know it was from you, thanks Kriminal Very Happy ) So I read at KVR what's in CM sometimes, and 3 weeks later (postman here likes to have some drinks on his journey, well, why not, good man Very Happy, but he's kinda slow then, he he) I can read it myself, hi hi...

So where to find THAT magazine if you don't have a sister living in the UK Confused ?

Ok, the CM-Muzys together with all the MUON, LINPLUG, PSP and OHMFORCE stuff is really unbeatable (softwareside).
But 80 - 90 percent of CM is pure marketing - same with KEYS too. Confused

So I buy magazines like these mainly for

- interviews
- product news
- (some) tutorials

BUT, sometimes the cdrom is the only reason to buy the mag because many infos are already placed somewhere in the WorldWideWaiting.

Regarding CM:

YEAR-SUBSCRIPTION
Now you can make a subscription directly on
http://www.computermusic.co.uk/main.asp for only 6,90 EUR per issue free home if you are living in Europe.

ONLY ONE ISSUE
You can go to one of the bigger "international press" newsagents in the main railway station of next
bigger town. They are often connected with bigger booksellers and can order the mag directly through the distributor (Germany: SAARBACH) for nearly 19 EUR per issue... Shit!

Regarding DMMM:

I think the thing to remember about magazines like Computer Music is that they have to cater for beginners. Every issue is someone's first and they may have no idea how to go about making music. That's why the same 'beginners' section is included in the mag each issue and it's also the reason that, if you read CM for long enough, you get similar articles repeating every so often.

I still buy CM pretty much every month, mainly for the coverdisc, but also it's always good to flick through the News, tutorials and other sections. Plus, my memory is shit, so I don't mind the repeating bits! I always find that if I read a 'beginners' article, I 'remember' some great trick I used to use...

I wish there had been as good a resource as CM when I first started out!

You can reorder all intersting issues of Keys (www.keys.de), but the payment has to be done with cheque - i don know if they send in the US, though.
Especially Microtera and Tassman Mini are great and certainly each worth quite a sum of money.

i just like to have something to read every once in a while relating to computer music, especially for those days where i'm too exhausted from work to play with my gear. last time i went shopping i browsed through Computer Music, Future Music, Music Tech Magazine, and Digital Music Maker. at approximately $20 Cdn for any of them, one has to consider the CD. last time i looked i had all of the "non-demo" software listed on the CDs, which i had found here on k-v-r, hitsquad, or from an old issue i had bought in the past. i am usually not attracted to the "free samples" CDs as most have not been that impressive anyway.

(disappointed i bought "The 12th Planet" by Zecharia Sitchin).

it would be nice if the magazine makers came up with either more of their own original products, or made some lower cost alternative issues with no CD at all...

DMM Question Never heard before Sad

In Portugal we can find CM, MTM (english, and also spanish editions Crying or Very sad Mad ), Future Music and Musicrun (bought it only once: very poor). Of course also Keyboard, Electronic Musician etc, but hardware is not my playground. I was only able to get Keys in Germany (once in Bonn, but Köln airport seems to be the place).

I know these magazines have loads of crap but that's where I started to understand a bit what this world is about (specially the former, CM, that was much better years ago) and I must feel grateful for that.

lethe,

A few of the German Keys freebies (MicroTera, Tassman Light, Orion Basic) trickled their way down to Music Tech Mag, which is available here in the States. I've seen it at Borders.

MTM also had a version of Phatfree on it...that still had the "Computer Music" logo on it!!!

DMM is available at Border's, too. The issue they had at the store yesterday was the effects special...I can wait for them to catch up.

Why does it take about a month for those magazines to get to the States?

CM vs MTM vs DMM?

CM is probably my favorite of the three. I like their critiques of reader demos, as well as their section on recreating the production techniques of various artists. Their cover CD contains some good stuff, though much of this is part of their standard library which is included every month.

MTM seems to be the most sophisticated of the three. They have had a few freebies which have been jewels - such as the microTERA. They also have a few decent sampled instruments. On the other hand, they seem to have a Mac/Logic bias, and their sampled instruments are only available in EXS24, which is not supported by my sampler.

DMM is one I have only skimmed on the shelf, but my impression is that they are the most simplistic of the three. They also suffer from limited goodies on their cover disc. I haven't yet seen anything that isn't freely available elsewhere.

What, like, the never-seen-before few hundred megabytes of sample content.

Depends. With my luck, after subscribing they would end up providing the "Phyllis Diller Vokal Toolkit" or something equally unappealing.

whyterabbyt wrote:

Probably not. Do I really need the cutdown version of yet another basic sequencer?

CM-101, SR-202 I haven't used. Likewise CMuzys. However the 303, 404, 505 are perfectly worthwhile, as well as SpringVerb and Ohmygod.

I quite agree - thanks for the input. If I remember correctly, a subscription in the US is in the area of $100. That won't do - too many other priorities for the money. But I can swing a magazine each month. CM is usually the best for me (still learning). And I've learned alot by trolling KVR. Like how you seem to show up in almost every topic. Nice to hear.

If you're english speaking only
i would recommend:

Order 1 or 2 German issues for the
freebees and subscribe to a good
english magazine (FM, CM,...).

NI CARBON is a musthave,
you'll get it as standalone AND as
vsti too.

NI KOMPAKT with samples is a
could have - but it has to be registered as an official NI-product on their site and works only on the registered computer then.

Has anyone in America seen this mag in the barnes and nobles or anywhere?
I wouldnt mind checking this out.
Seems a little cheaper than CM also...I might be wrong tho.

I've seen issues in the USA in Borders (a large chain of "super" bookstores). The issue on sale now is all about VST effects and has 50 effects on the CD (and another CD with something else on it). I don't have the mag with me or I'd give you the exact info.

As a charter reader of Computer Music and long-time reader of SOS, FM, and the two crap American music mags, I find that DMM has some very creative ideas that make me want to keep reading. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way for non-UK readers to subscribe. The mag comes out 6 times a year but seems to have frequent additional specials on Cubase and other boring subjects.
