AuthorTopic: Atmosphere Quandry !
Ian Ainslie
Posted: 8th July 2004 03:17
I have a small quandry and bit of advise would be appreciated !
I am at the stage now where I have pretty much everything covered in terms of synths and fx.
I own and regularly use
Reaktor 4 (yeeeeeeeeeeeee-hah Love Very Happy Love )
Rhino Very Happy
Chameleon Cool
Space Synth Razz
M42 Smile

I feel that my arsenal is nearly complete. I am, however, very interested in getting hold of Atmosphere (forget all the issues with upgrade to 2.0 and LFO syncing... Wink ).
Does Atmosphere offer anything that the above can not ?
Is it worth my while to grab a copy, or will it just be a waste of money ?
Any thoughts Question hyper
Thanks
Ian

as it plays samples as opposed to synthesizing it's not as flexible as a synth. You can layer the sounds so you can easily come up with new sounds, if you are not a programmer.

Pros - sound quality and sample content
Cons (apart from what you already mentioned) - weak filters, cannot add new sample content

Atmosphere has Eric Persing. Either that means you have to have it or it doesn't... Smile

For what it's worth, I installed Atmosphere yesterday as a gift to myself for obtaining a rather difficult profession certification. (yay me!)

I was really on the fence about the recent Komplete bundle, which came in at about $100US more. So why did I go with Atmosphere?

Most of my reasons center around the fact that I already have plugs that employ every type of synthesis I want. Atmosphere brings a lot of extras to the table for me in terms of sound quality, variety of sampled sound sources, and excellent pre-built patches. I'm sure you've listened to the demos as many times as I have, so you know what Atmosphere is capable of.

The filter argument is not all that valid to my ears, and the lack of LFO synch is going to be fixed soon, if the hints I've read are any guide. And hey, whatever may be wrong with the filters gets upgraded in the next revision as well.

The long and the short of it for me is that Atmosphere more than filled a niche for my setup. Your milage may vary.

Hi:

I have alot stuff. I bought Atmosphere. I nice for some additional texture when you are layering sounds. It has a breathy quality that is hard to duplicate unless you have an exceptional reverb. The thing that annoys me is that they shamelessly used everyone else product to make their samples yet their license agreement forbids you from using their sounds in samples you may commercial sell. So if you are just making music...then no problem. But it is still grossly selfish.

From what you listed I would be more inclined to get Trilogy, or a good ROMpler. You seem to have pads covered very well, and Atmosphere is pads. But if you really want more pads, get Atmosphere, and then start saving for ABSynth.

Atmosphere works great with me. Simple and easy to use. I have all three Spectronics' products...been using them a lot. (Waiting for the upgrade to Stylus).

Yes, they are working on updating/upgrading, depending how you look at it, all three products. And they listen to their customers (meaning us...and that is great!) Of course they are not going to add 'ALL' requests...simply not possible. But whatever they add, it's going to be great.

The only thing I have a "little" problem with is how much it actually costs. A "little" too pricy...only if they have a "bundle" offer or some sort of a "loyal customer" discount. Smile

NEway, in short, I LOVE USING ATMOSPHERE!

I have Atmosphere. I love it! I SHOULD have Ultrafocus here in a few days and will let you know how it compares. What Atmosphere gives you is REAL analog sounds which your collection does not have.

I would also consider Tera 2 though. 1400+ presets and a killer sound with LOTS of synthesis possibilities.

I wonder if a "group buy" could be arranged for Atmosphere. I think there is a lot of interest for that one. Just a thought . . .

And I would think that most people by now have already bought it, or have ruled it out being this late in the game. Maybe when Atmosphere 2 comes out....?

Kinda, sorta hinted at, but not really 'announced' by Persing. I imagine it'll have the new filters, and sync to tempo though. Wink

I think there are a large number of potential customers who are put off by the high price point (putting aside the issue of whether it is "worth it"). I think there is a huge untapped customer base if they could drop the price for some time.

Now, if a "group buy" could be arranged with the Sonar Board, the Logic Board, etc. That would be something.

Hi, I'm a lurker in the Spectrasonics Yahoo group specifically because I had intended to get Atmosphere (but then the Komplete2 package intervened). There is talk of an upgrade for all the Spectrasonics instruments and even what that might be, nothing definite from Eric P about what that might be, and more importantly for me, no mention really of when.

Even so, if the price was right and it wasn't immediate I'd also be interested in a group buy because it does sound wonderful to me Very Happy

as far as i understand all the patches that have been sampled for atmosphere have been created from scratch by Eric Persing and his team.
cant smell anything selfish in that.
A synth is just a tool to create sound with. You buy the synth, create your own sound with it, then you sample your creation and sell the license to use that sample.
simple enough i would say.

You forgot 'obtain the license and permission to use the synthesizers that require such an agreement' to that list of yours.

Indeed. You still have the option of trying to obtain such permission (good luck Smile ). Although, more usefully, I think they're quite reasonable when looking at stuff like computer game music (they strike it out in the license, but that's mostly to ensure you don't stick distorted reality in as a soundfont.)
