AuthorTopic: Effect search? I want a "vintage" piano

Hi,

I'm searching for a piano which is warm, deep and with no high frequencies, can't describe. What I mean is something like in this: http://mitglied.lycos.de/squuq/ultimatum.ogg (Enjoy! Its an excerpt of Murcof - Ultimatum)

I tried some simple piano freebies (like mda) and did some lowpass filteri9ng- did not sound that good.

What am I searching for? An effect? I dont want to create a piano concert, so I don't need super duper gigabyte piano archives....

TIA

Edit: I wanted to put it into effects forum... too late Sad

You probably should try some soundfonts. They aren't super-duper-giga-sized necessarily. Try various pianos.

Get the free VSTi called sfz to play these soundfonts.

There are a few places to download soundfonts - offhand I don't know them...search here for recommendations.

to get that muted piano sound you need a good reverb that will *really* simulate a concert hall. Further you will need a good grand piano sample set. It will most definitely sound too bright for you without:

1) a good low pass filter, using a 6 or 12 db slope
2) good reverb, start with a 50/50 wet dry mix and tweak from there
3) you may want to find a good room simulation plugin that will put the piano in a space and simulate different mic locations which should knock down the hi end somewhat.

or you could just hire out a piano and concert hall for a few hours and record to your hearts content Very Happy Surprised

psp has that piano reverb free plug.

I used that with some soundfonts on sfz to good effect

you might want to look into the malsmjo piano sample. it's a darker piano than what we've come to expect.

do a google on digital piano shootout for the same midi file played through a wide variety of piano samples to be able to compare

MDA combo MB1 preset is good for this, very slight bit of drive, set it to stereo, then eq a bit more off the top end as well, and add yer reverb to suit.
