if i had a vst that worked in fruity loops but wanted another host, would that vst still be the same in another host can use vsts?

also, is vst synonymous with vsti?

Yes, it should work in any host that accepts VST's but there are occasional conflicts. VST is a standard. the lower case i following usually means VST instrument, such as a sampler or synth as opposed to an effect. In fact, you can pick up a VST chess game that will run within a host.

Some hosts come with VSTs that only work in that host. Cubase SX is one, Console I think is another. Fruity's vst plugins I think work in any host, but fruity proprietary plugins will not.

Most hosts have demos, so you can check if your favorite VSTs conflicts with that host, before buying it. If the host don't have an available demo, don't buy it. Companies who don't supply demos, don't deserve your money.

so a VST is pretty much an effect and a VSTi would be a sequence tool or an instrument like piano, violin or any type of sound to be sequenced and editted?

i hate to sound like a noob but i'd like to get my facts straight before i start spending money on things i want to work with.

There are PLENTY of free ones to try out also, so you can see how you like to work with VSTs and VSTi's before you start spending money on them.

VST is anything that goes by the VST standard, which includes instruments and effects. VSTi is what we normally use to talk about a VST instrument (as opposed to an effect). I use VSTfx if I'm referring to a VST effect. There's no real standard acronym for this that I have seen.

Some VST plugins are both instruments AND effects, although I don't know if that's something that breaks the standard...

To add, VST came first, was meant as effects, VSTi came second, for instruments, which is why effects aren't called VSTfx officially, although the designation makes a conversation easier.

I think somewhere in the standard headers there is an option to indicate whether the plugin is an effect or a synth. VSTi have to have a midi in pin/port, while fx need to have an audio in pin/port.
