AuthorTopic: ARP 2600

Does anyone know which VSTi sounds most like the ARP 2600? I believe VAZ Modular's the closest thing you can get, but I've been informed that Synapse Hydra can kick out similar leads (analogue brasses and 'flutey' sounds).

I've never owned an ARP so I don't know for sure, just listened to Depeche Mode's 'Leave In Silence' a lot Very Happy

I've been told that Oddity is mostly monophonic (?) so it's only good for basses. Any help would be appreciated as I have FL Studio and am using WASP for my ARP sounds, it's pretty cool but doesn't quite cut the mustard. Which plugin do I spend my cash on?

Cheers!

why would you say that?
the 2600 is mono too.

Aye, once upon a time all of the good synths were mono only and many a good tune was made with them.
So.....leads aren't played in mono? Arpeggios aren't played in mono? Many of those trancey riffs aren't played in mono?

And yes, Oddity is probably the closest at the moment to a 2600. Oddyseys were pretty well cut-down versions of 2600s although many of the parts differed depending on the model of 2600. Try out the Oddity demo... it's possibly an acquired taste, but good nevertheless. Quite distinctive and very ARP like.

Can I ask the same question about the ARP Quadra? I was in a band many years ago where k/b player had one of these beasts. Very unreliable as I recall, but very nice sounds. Would like to be able to recreate that sound in some way.

VAZ definitely excels at the Arp sound, and you can build complex instruments that will get close to the Arp 2600, then make them polyphonic.

Lord & Karlheinz have an ARP 2600 emulation Reaktor instrument in their instrument/macro bundle.

I managed to fool a real 2600 owner with a patch I made on this thing.

This is assuming you use Reaktor, mind you.
Otherwise, I would try Snip by Novaflash, which has a zillion patching options and very good sound quality.

Hope this helps,

We've got an Odyssey and a 2600 here and frankly the tonal difference is negligible. You don't get a few things on the Odyssey that you do on the 2600 such as the patching (and a daft spring reverb) but you'll get very silmilar sounds and it's a good way of getting to grips with the ARP sound programming method.

I'd download the Oddity and see how you get on with it - as Kritikon said, it is an acquired taste in both tones and programming-wise.

The Quadra is not very close to the Odyssey. I've been talking with one of the original designers of ARP instruments recently and there's no doubt that serious corners were cut with the Quadra, which certainly would back-up paulie's experiences of reliability issues.

Thanks

Actually the 2600 was quasi-duophonic with the last keyboard available with it(which was a duophonic keyboard). However,if I'm remembering right you had to split up the oscillators(one per voice).I haven't played around with a 2600 for 20 years or so,so I could be wrong about that.

The Oddysey, 2600 and in fact the majority of Moog Modulars were duophonic, and if memory serves me right, Leave in Silence was mostly a Jupiter 8 and PPG with Simmons Drums though the band did use Daniel Millers 2600 quite a lot. If your looking for an Arp type sound then Oddity is the closest yet and its well able to push out Mode, Silicon Teens and Fad Gadget type synthery no problem and if you want to thicken it try triggering two instances of the plug at the same time.

I`ve owned an Arp Odysse for many years, and it`s an amazing instrument! Far better than the MiniMoog in my opnion. It`s duophonic in the sense that you can actually play two independent oscillators striking two keys at the same time. So itīs possible to create nice brass sounds using two square waves with puls with modulation. The Odd-SE by EFM, made with Synthedit (!) does a great job emulating the Odysse. I found a free version somewhere, and I can tell you it feels and sounds exactly like the original !
Check it out at http://www.ele4music.com/synthedit/synthedit.html

Cheers. Mik.

Until one of these synths can model the awful spring reverb & built-in speakers, we ain't even close to having a 2600! Wink

I would put my money would be on Gmedia for a dead on 2600 emulation, spring reverb and speakers included.
