Anyone know of a banjo synthesizer? Not a sampler, but something that actually creates a banjo sound?

I know of no dedicated banjo symth, but there are some generic "plucked instrument" synths available. One of those might get close to a banjo sound. A lot of other synths can also get somewhat close to an authentic banjo sound. (Some perform the emulation better than others.)

Samplers can get very close, assuming you have the right samples, but you don't seem to want to include them in the discussion.

Unfortunately, the only thing I know of that is designed primarily to create banjo sounds, and does an excellent job of it, is a banjo. Wink

I was listening to Harm Visser's demo's for his Tassman instrument models today and the Banjo he has done is the best modelled Banjo I've heard.

There's a Banjo preset in Steampipe for Reaktor but it's not as realistic.

I listened to the MP3 and was carried away in a banjo rapsody. I bought a banjo once, long ago, and tried to learn to play it, and didn't have the patience, and sold it back to the same store for MORE money than I paid. But this sounds like I can play it in my own way.

And this convinced me to go ahead and upgrade to Tassman 4 (from Tassman 2 which was free with Sonar 1). So money well spent, or something like that.

Thanks for the very exact tip!

My pleasure.

It does sound good - I hope the rest lives up to it's promise. I keep thinking about Tassman myself - maybe if they did a group buy I might jump in.

One I've been using for banjo lately is AbstractGuitar. You can emulate finger rolls fairly easily, and the tone's fairly realistic as well.
