Well, there's that new Retro GS-1 coming soon, just test driving the demo meself.
I'd still go with hardware if you really want it sounding authentic - otherwise ReFX' QuadraSID. (There's still some SID things not emulated by any publicly available emulation, not even in ReSID which is the supreme SID emulation engine used in SIDPlay variants, Vice emulator etc) Besides a hefty collection of 64s, 128s, accessories and a tube full of SIDs, I have a HardSID Quattro in my secondary machine. The ISA version, who got neglected driverwise when the PCI version appeared... but I guess I can still recommend the card, the new drivers / editor (for the PCI version, supposedly working with the ISA version too but nobody can provide any information on this and all I could achieve myself was a messed up XP...) have some great features especially for making as authentic sounds as possible. Vanguard can produce C64 alike sounds. Also I've been using Orion's WaspXT for such sounds. | ||

If you have reason, there is a free refill of drum sounds from the C64.

Nobody mentioned Invader? Also, a Game Boy emulator and a demo rom of Nanoloop is a neat thing to have. |
