First off, I'm a novice so the problem I'm having may be entirely my fault. I recently downloaded String Theory. It worked fine for a while. My problem is that, recently, it has been making Cubase SL (V2) crash. I create something that uses String Theory, save it, and exit Cubase. When I go to open the project again Cubase starts up, appears to open the file, then Cubase vanishes. It just quits abruptly without any explanations or errors. I don't know if it's related but this problem started after I downloaded the Service Pack 2 update for WinXP. Coincidence?
Is anyone else having this problem? I think String Theory is a great program and would hate to stop using it because of some mistake on my part. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Ant-

hi,
im sorry to hear that you are having crashing troubles with ST. im really not sure whats causing this. i also use cubase SL 2 on a windows XP computer and im not running into this problem at all. i have not downloaded the latest service pack for XP though. i've heard people mention that the new service pack has caused a lot of strange problems on their computers...but i've no idea if this could the cause of your string theory problem or not. you said that string theory was working fine for a while there. was the SP2 install the only thing you've changed on your system since then? by any chance, have you tested this with projects saved using different string theory presets? (just in case its a problem with some presets and not the whole synth.) does this happen with any of my other synths? i'll see what i can find out about this. also, please let me know if you discover anything. thanks, -ugo

OK. I've got the problem refined a little bit more. The crash seems to occur when I try to open more than one session of String Theory. When I open a second session and play, Cubase starts to play for a split second. After that, the last snipit of sound (less than 1/4 second) just keeps repeating and I have to restart my computer. I'm guessing that I'm hanging up my sound card?
To answer your question, the only things that changed were the SP2 install and NAV updates. Other than that, nothing. I thought that it was the "percussion groove" preset that caused the hangup. In playing around with it though, it doesn't seem to matter which preset is being used. -Ant- PS- I appologize for my choice in message title. As I said before, the problem is most likely caused by something that I am doing wrong and not String Theory.

hi,
thanks for the update.
strange, i can run multiple instances of ST without any problems. i wonder whats causing this to happen for you? i'll run this past a few of my computer-tech friends and see if they've got any ideas. by the way, what are your system specs? just for the record, mine are: AMD XP 2000+ (1.6ghz) 1.5 gig's of ram win XP pro (SP2 not installed) echo layla 20 with WDM drivers (v6.08b), current buffer size = 1024 (though i've also run at 512) cubase SL 2.2.0.35 -ugo

Hi,
It's definitely something to do with having multiple sessions open. At best, I can save a project with more than one instance of ST utilized, work with it with no problems for a little while, then save it. The moment I try to reopen that project, though, Cubase dumps me out. My system is a Compaq Persario running WinXP Professional (Service Pack 2 installed) with an Intel Pentium 4 (3.00GHz) and 1.00GB RAM. I've got Cubase SL version 2.2.0 Build 33. If it helps, my sound card is a Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (That's what it's listed as under the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" window. -Ant- |
