I would like to see a software drum machine that can be used for live free-form performances; something similar to Steinberg Groove Agent with it's on-demand fill/random fill function (so I can inject a fill when I want one, and not have to pre-program) but UNLIKE Groove Agent, has the ability to accept the user's own .wav samples. I've heard that BFD can do this, but not being able to downlowd a demo and not seeing anything that resembles an on-demand fill function on the gui, plus not reading anything that I can interpret in the product description specifying the above function, I am unwilling to pay the exhorbitant price to find out. Really, BFD and Groove Agent are out of my budget anyway. Thanks for listening.

How much are you willing to pay?

Hmmm, how much am I willing to pay? Well, that would depend on the "usability" of the app. I'm not a drummer, don't want to be a drummer, and don't want to program drum parts, so the thing would have to be as easy to use as Groove Agent. However, as most of the forum seems to agree, Groove Agent's kits are limited and sound sub-standard to say the least; hence the need to load one's own .wav samples. Or, EVEN BETTER, have the ability to load any of the thousands of drum loops available everywhere, and somehow trigger fills on-the-fly from the loops. I'm not a programmer, but unfortunately, this last suggestion sounds like it would be a nightmare, if not impossible to program (how's that for a challenge). If that were the case, that's too bad because this would definitely be the ideal way to go. However, if it could be done effectively, it would be, in my opinion, the "Holy Grail" and worth a pretty penny.

this comes up from time to time. honestly, i'm fed up of replying to posts where people ask for plugins, because you can spend a couple hundred hours developing them and then the dozen people that request it are suddenly all too busy or doing somethnig else evidently to even reply.

d/l synthedit, build it yourself. i did. i've built 1 automatic synth drummer, a loop reshuffler with rndom and user sequences, and ~ a dozen other random generators, just waiting for you to d/l the source and rip the parts out that you need.

that way, you can get it right.

You can already use Groove Agent's MIDI Out function to trigger other VSTi (e.g. a sampler with your own WAV files loaded). In that sense, you are not limited to its internal sounds.

PaintedBlue,
Does Groove Agent's "fill button" function normally when your triggering other synths with the midi out function, or is this something that only works within Groove Agent itself? It would be great if you could trigger fills from the samples in the other synths. Thanks for the info.

What you are looking for sounds like

http://www.devine-machine.com/home.html

You can load your own loops. It then identifies the various hits and allows you to trigger fills.

Have a look.

That's how it works, but you then have to realize that GA does limit you to its own internal patterns.

You might want to consider looking into a MFX plug-in such as MusicLab's Slicy/Fill-In Drummer as well.
