They are talking about using a GPU for effects such as reverb, chorus, etc. These being utilized in synths too, I would figure some of these heavy horse synths could be trimmed down and optimised. This opens the door to some new and interesting things coming down the road. Or a giant road block.

So much R&D and competition has gone into the videocard market that it only makes sense to find way to utilize the horsepower. If I didn't have a full time job, I'd jump on this problem like a horny monkey.

It's a great idea. It reminds me of the programmers that used the Amiga's blitter to run Conway's Life program.

They've announced that they are working on effects, not an entire synth. How about a synth with built in "convolution reverb" or many new possibilities?
