i loved my CS2X to death. it was my first synth and i think it's probably one of the best started synths still. wish i never would've sold it, actually, had some of the most inspiring presets.

I'd hold on a bit and look for CS6X synths. They were sold at the end for $400. The CS6X is a serious synth and sounds teriffic. The CS2X has one interesting sound by use of layering and then becomes a XM synth on the rest of it's midi channels, 5 - 16.
imo, a good first synth should enable you to make great sounds and be flexible. Check for the EMU PK-6. They were selling for $400 as well and their ROM upgrades enable you to get a Orbit's sound set or the Xtreme Lead ROM. I got a fully loaded one as a gift and for me the XL2 ROM was worth the price of the synth. There's a series of 4 knobs with a button that allows them to be used for up to 16 parameters. Also, the synth has a nice beat mode which allows you to mix beats while playing synth lines or pads. It's really helped me get work done and it also sounds great. You've not heard what filters can do until you've worked with z-plane filters. Good luck hunting!

Had a CS1x, was great, sold it to buy a CS2x.
That was ok, but the sounds were very 'cheap' IMO, there was a few good pad sounds but all in all I think theres better 2nd hand synths for £220 ($300).

great buy. anything yamaha makes is a great buy imo.
You can find it cheaper on ebay ~200$ sometimes.

I second the cs6x idea, that synth is awesome, the filters, arpeggiator, the presets. If you want to hear samples go to
http://www.vengeance-music.de/Virus2/indexes/indexSounds.html they have the cosmic x set for the cs6x

I've owned both the CS1x and CS2x and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. They are not great for programming but there are plenty of tweaks available to tailor any preset. The included ROM sounds are generally very good. I particularly love some of the strings [Angel Str - P093 is a big favourite].
The assignable knobs and wheel make it lots of fun to play and the arpeggiator fairly rocks. I recently bought another CS1x because I missed those strings so much so I'd say you've done well. The manual also has one fo the best explanations of synthesis around.

now that im getting a cs2x should i sell my PSR-290?does the cs2x have everything that the PSR-290 has including sounds?or is the PRS-290 different?the store im buying the cs2x from wants to give me 75 for the PSR-290.what should i do trade the PSR-290 for a discount on the cs2x or keep the PSR-290?

if you really want $75 off the price, go for it, but it really is always nice having an extra midi controller handy. especially if you ever decide to opt for rack gear |
