AuthorTopic: can i make music with just Crystal
declassified
Posted: 1st November 2004 06:46
Reading the other thread, i was just wondering if it would be possible to make entire songs with just Crystal, a bunch of soundfonts, a sequencer and extensive use of mangling effects.

The drums would be sample/break-based, though.

I'm into something between jungle/drum'n'bass and lounge/chillout with a bit of jazz chords and improvisation.

Of course. Some weird people have made music for piano only. With Crystal you can have so much more sounds.

Here is one I made with only crystal (all self-made presets)+ 1 sample (a breath sound):

not your genre really but maybe an inspiration anyway (or not). Rolling Eyes

I'd have to say yes, but not sure why you'd want to!! So many other great free synths and stuff out there, may as well take advantage of some of them too.

Yeah, you can make music with ANYTHING, obviously. It's a matter of if using makes you WANT to make music. If Crystal is your favorite synth, it's totally your type of thing, etc, then you can make music with nothing else. If you can't stand Crystal (or programming it Razz) then you still CAN make music, but you probably WON'T, since you won't want to.

Why exactly 28? Confused HiHi

(EDIT: Devon already said that)

I'm quite certain you can make music by just recording your breath, but that would neither be jungle nor what i like to hear. (The last point is by far more important...)

I just want to reduce my number of used VSTI to some minimum because i find it hard to get used to all the different GUIs.

If I had to pick one free synth to make music with (and it was anything but ambient) I would NOT choose Crystal myself. It's probably the most versatile of them all, and you could argue that it's better to have too much than too little... so yes, you would have most of your bases covered with Crystal.

But do you honestly want to deal with that beast for every lead, bass, and pad? If so, I admire your courage.

There was a competition on the Logic forum for music with just the metronome.
