I know this is not a VSTi but.....
I confess that I have been using a *cough* dodgy version of 2.54 on my 2nd DAW (which I love). So I've decided to do the right thing and buy GS3 Orchestra. I have an RME Multiface on DAW2 and am aware of certain issues regarding disappearing Midi drivers (for which there is, I gather, a workaround). Is anyone using GS3 ? Is it the bizz ? BC

Been using it for a couple of weeks now. I haven't had any issues with disappearing drivers. It works like a dream. Belive me, if you like the previous version, you will be glad you "did the right thing". GigaPulse utterly rules. It's unlike any impulse reverb I have used. Each preset can have tons of impulses in play...most have 126! Neat stuff. I always complain about sampled acoustic instruments because I can't change the mic or mic position on a sample...with GigaPulse, you can. And, with GSIF 2 drivers, you can use it with external inputs. Wicked.

Cool.
And I didn't realise I'm elligible for the "competetive" upgrade price (5 times over if the truth be told - if you ignore my *ahem* old version Just re-ordered BC

How is GS3 for stability, CPU usage and Rewire?
Does it beat Kontakt 1.5.3?

GS3.x don't handle Hyperthreading & doesn't behave correctly with dual CPU. That's maybe the source of your problemo.

GS3 has not given me any stability problems whatsoever. CPU usage is surprisingly good, though when using GigaPulse it climbs pretty high. My battered old XP1900+ PC doesn't meet Tascam's minimum system requirements, yet GigaStudio 3 is purring along quite nicely.
ReWire works as well as any ReWire implentation. I had no trouble there, but it seems that you had better have a powerful computer to make use of it. I am using GigaStudio on the PC, and triggering from a DAW on my Mac, so ReWire isn't necessary. Still, I tried it out in Sonar 4 on the PC, and it played nicely. By the way, the built-in compression and EQ on GS3's DSP Station mixer sound quite good, as well.

Scott - can I ask some advice ? My primary sequencing/VSTi DAW is built around RME HDSP 9652. I have Midi going into this as well as one of the Midiouts dedicated to Giga DAW 2 (P4 2.4, 1 GB RAM, RME Multiface, FLS and Cubase 5.2 as Rewire hosts and/or VSTi hosts). Audio from Giga will have to return back to DAW 1 to be integrated in Cubase SX, FLS or whatever. Unfortunately this then finally has to be re-sent out to DAW 2 for monitoring (as the 9652 doesn't have analogue out). How would I take all the potential latencies into account when building tracks involving GS3 ? Wouldn't the audio returning to DAW 1 from Giga be delayed compared to the audio generated from samples/vsti's on DAW 1 ? thanks BC

Devon may be better equipped to answer this question, since he is an avid GS user, but what I have found is that when running GS3 on a separate DAW, and using the GSIF drivers, latency is extremely low. As low or lower than some of the hardware samplers I have used. Still, I can't abide track delays, so I usually shift tracks when needed (even with hardware synths). This means that I will have to sit down and calculate GS3's latency at some point so that I can figure that into my work.
As far as monitoring goes, I only have an Audiophile 24/96 on the PC that Giga is on, and I simply monitor its output via the input device on the Mac (a MOTU 828MkII), so I am probably not much help there... If the combined latencies of GS and your host are too much to deal with, you can always calculate the delay and use a track delay plug-in on the other tracks to align playback...a pain, really. However, I can't imagine that the combined latencies you will suffer will be more than a handful of milliseconds, so playback ought not to be so bad. My Korg Prophecy has around 10ms delay from hitting a note and hearing it played back...and that is hardware!

Thanks !
Devon, are you listening ? I need you....

I'm having the same problem as basic channel - as soon as GS3 is installed the Giga MIDI ports override my RME MIDI ports - the RME ports no longer show up & applications that use MIDI are able to use the new GIGA ports (including GS!). Anyone seen this or have a solution?? I've looked all over.
Thanks. |
