and that synth is Linplug Alpha (the full version)
presets aside, this synth isn't overly complicated to program, and i never gave it the time of day, and i spent a few hours on it this morning, and i must say I'm impressed! very low cpu, very nice atmospheres, fx and pads, and bass are possible. check it out!

I hear you Ttoz, so many times I'm trying out new samples and synths and effects. But when I fire up some the old 'keepers', I'm always saying Daaaaamn! This is really freakin' good! Alpha is definately one for sure that never looses it's flavor on the bedpost overnight.

Does this mean you and Linplug have kissed and made up?

yeah agreed, and Delta III from LinPlug is also an awesome synth that doesn't get much attention anymore after albino. It is even getting discontinued soon I think, I wish they would update the gui a little bit before it goes off the shelfs and alpha could use a facelift too come to think about it. But anyway, Delta III has it's own sound definetely and I'll take it for a spin every now and then. it has a superb feeling.

still
nothing quite beats firing up albino 2

... unless its pulling your liver out through your left nostril. Interestingly, on the very rare occasions that I revisit old synths, it invariably backs up my initial decision to stop using it. OTOH, if its good it is unlikely that I would stop using it in the first place unless I came upon something better.

Out of interest, what extras do you get on the full version? I checked on Linplug's site ages ago, but it looked like the freebie and the bought version were pretty similar. Do you get more modulation slots?
I still use Freealpha quite a bit - it's a great VA workhorse.

MmmmmHmmmmmm.......I might have to think about actually buying it then. Some of those would be nice to have methinks.

Biggest downside of the free version: No sustain pedal support.
The full version does have sustain response, now does it?

However an upside to the free version is that there are TONS of patches for it now at Patch Arena. We had a competition for it there and lots of great programmers did patches for it. Theres lots of banks avaiable now. Go get'em TC

The difference in sound quality between the freebie alpha and the new alpha2 is like night/day ( Or for orion users, like wasp vs waspXT )
Luckily, you can now demo the full alpha2 and experience the difference between them first hand. I posted a similar "hail alpha2" thread a while back; but apparently everone here at KVR has learned to ignore my posts... http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59136&highlight=alpha2

In fact, there are really some plugs by Linplug that really rocks, I've tryed with Linplug CM505 (yes, semifree) that really seems to RM-IV but it has its own sounds that seems better than to use samples, of course, the posibilities are limited, but it seems more an old drummachine then other pro soft.
Yes, Linplug has been many years giving'us som good things. And Alpha is just another one.

I hereby ditto the good stuff on FreeAlpha. Because of it I have put Alpha2 on my purchase list, along with eXT. I was able to get some really good rotary speaker sounds out of FreeAlpha. To really do it bangup, though, it would take about an 8 level mod matrix AND the ability to shift the lfo phasing in 90 degree increments - change the lfo starting points in relation to each other.
But yeah, Free Alpha is totally sweet.

I just read your original post - very informative and well written - thanks! I share your view that CPU usage is a key factor to real world usability. |
