Can these two even be compared?
From what I understand they are both modelling synths, but I've got a feeling Cameleon is going to be more flexible. For now I could spend the money on Logic 7 pro upgrade, (I'm currently on Logic Pro 6.4.2) or Cameleon 5000. Has anyone here compared both the synths? I'm downloading the Demo of Cameleon as we post. I currently use ES2 a lot and EVP88, and I also have ODDITY for some dirrrty leads. My music is a mixture of Electronica and Orchestral and I have my bases covered for leads and bass and pads. What I want is something Special! I'm also considering Absynth 3 but have always found NI's stuff to be unstable with Logic on my olg pc and on my new MAC.

They're actually quite different. Cameleon is an additive synth with a lot of interesting morphing and modulation possibilities. Sculpture is a modelling synth, again with a lot of flexibility.
Personally I think Sculpture breaks more new ground than Cameleon does but Cameleon is very nice too. Cameleon is also pretty reasonably priced but I don't think it can compare to all the stuff you get in the upgrade from Logic 6 -> 7.

Wow, a reply at 2:30 in the morning.
Are you in the US? True, Logic 7 has loads of new features and as soon as they provide an update that makes it more stable (since I'm about to start playing keyboards at gigs using EVP 88 and ES2 etc) I will upgrade. But I will have a better idea after playing with the Cameleon 500 demo.

Yep. In California. By all means check out the Cameleon demo. It's very cool. You might also want to try Virsyn Cube, which is similar. There's a demo on their website.

I'll have a look at Virsyn Cube,
I've started playing with Cameleon and it appears very easy to use and has a logical layout.

I'm not fond of Cameleon (or any of the additives) for lead & bass sounds, although it can do those. It excels at spacey evolving ambient sounds and pads though. It's pretty easy to program considering how complex its output can be.

Ocean, from your three posts in this thread it is obvious you are dying to get cameleon and are continously looking for confirmation. just get it, it rocks.

Not at all obvious from the posts. And he has not even played with Sculpture yet.

Absynth2 never crashed on my Mac. And it is something special, as is Cameleon, as is Sculpture. Do yourself a favour and go to a shop to try out Sculpture and Absynth before you decide!

Thanks for the input guys.
I don't think Cameleon is as special as I hoped but maybe I need to delve far below the surface. I will definitely try out Absynth and Sculpture before buying. Cheers

Something special, you say... how about Minky Starshine?
Not to make light of MS, it's a very cool synth, but I don't suppose it's exactly what you're after. How about something like Tassman, or Tera? Both very awesome packages IMO.

I tried Minky Starshine ad although it has an innovative UI, after 5 mins tweaking I still had a fairly bland sounding pad, and I'm not new to synthesis.
I hope Absynth is as flexible as I think it is, Shame NI haven't got a demo for it.

Absynth is very cool, especially for ambient soundscape stuff. The next version (supposedly out this month) promises to add some interesting new possibilities and further improve it's already superb envelope editor.

Been enjoying Sculpture's plucks and bells, and totally agree that Absynth is fantastic...couldn't love Tassman, but this discussion shouldn't ignore the MIGHTY REAKTOR4. There are several exceptional physical-modeling ensembles in both the included libraries and the User lib that imo go way beyond Tassman (3 at least; didn't bother to upgrade) for any plucked or bowed sounds from mellow to maniacal. And Photone, the new "flagship" Reaktor synth, included in Electronic Instruments 2 is a freakin' MONSTER, with some spectacular plucked and mallet tones, and a host of pads'n'fx that have dropped Atmosphere from my radar screen almost completely; CPU-hungry, to be sure, but man, I'm really impressed.

Hi Oceanzen,
As kuniklo pointed out Cameleon and Sculpture are quite different - Cameleon is additive synth with resynthesis abilities, and Sculpture is physical modelling synth. As always checking out the demos is the best way to see if things suit you.
You can also try out some of the other banks of sounds with the demo - go to http://www.camelaudio.com/community.php and scroll down. Try some of the banks towards the bottom of the list. Certainly its true that you can get an aweful lot out of Cameleon through careful programming - if you give some idea of what you're after over in the Camel Audio forum, I'm sure someone will be able to indicate how to get what you're after. If you have feedback, I'm always interested to hear - posting in the suggestions thread in the forum is probably the best way. Thanks Ben

Hunger isn't a problem as I have a fairly new Dual 2 GHz G5, which I got because I love using lots of juicy plugins.
As I have found the REAKTOR 4 demo buggy. what is the full version like with Logic? I'm using Logic Pro 6.4.5 with Mac OSX 10.3.6 BTW |
