AuthorTopic: Anybody who has a "Virus" could be so kind to...

I don't have access to a "Virus". I would like to analize some sounds to understand why so many people likes it and try to "bring" something to softsynth.

Is here anybody so kind to sample one or two sounds and post here? (something like a filter sweep and/or a clean osc, to show why you like it so much. Just a single shot on a key)
Just to start with...

And: any link to a very good specific sample library?

Honestly. I had a VIRUS-B once. I loved it, but I sold it. Its not that I have been weeping since. Its a nice synth, but it basically aint that very different from other stuff.

It all comes down to skills, not tech.

Eee

I have a Virus C and would be more than willing to help out. I have tons of samples of it. I spend like two hours and create a whole bank of patches, then I sample them and load them into a sampler on my computer. Saves CPU compared to using a synth too Very Happy

Sadly, I have nowhere to host any files. I can e-mail you samples or whatever.

I can also tell you why I like it:

It's not so much the _ANALOG_ sound quality, it has something else going on,It aliases, it doesn't sound analog at all (it can though, at times.) The reason it kicks ass is because of its versatilty along with it's nasty sound. 3 Osc, wavetable.. FM. Ring mod. Sync. Mod Matrix. Multiple filter overdrive algorithms. Multiple distortion algorithms. Two filters that can be used in parallel and serial that sound good. Fast and easy to work with. It's got some serious unison features. You can detune AND pan the voices. It seems like every single VSTi VA out there can do unison, but you can't pan voices. The KLC MS-20 can pan though.

If I want analog there's a plethora of excellent soft synths to choose from. Gmedia, Arturia (i don't like them, but alot of people do), and VAZ Modular(one day... you will be mine... and we can run away together.) They sound awesome but look at impOSCar. 2 osc. No unison. No FM. Additive is cool, but I prefer FM. Probably because I don't know how to use additive HiHi

In this day and age you don't need a Moog bass. In a properly eq'd mix, you can use any synth to fill in that spot. And with a Virus you can get a very complex texture going. Not just a simple ENV Mod decay bass.

And part of it is due to the fact that most people that love their Virus don't use software, or the only software they know of is by Native Instruments, which isn't particularly fat sounding. They don't know about Albino or z3ta. Although Albino and z3ta sound nothing like a Virus. And Likewise.

And there's people that just love the sound of a Virus. I don't. It's ballsy... but something weird going on with the entire frequency response... feels kind hollow something... subdued in the mid and high range. Red+black was a good choice for the color scheme.

And dont forget how easy it is to add effects! Turn a knob... distortion. And theres like a dozen algorithms of distortion. Then phaser, blah blah.

I like how I can just get some cool stuff out of it really fast. z3ta was too cold and hard, albino was too warm and soft, and the Virus was just right. But I have z3ta and use it alot. But I only use it for hard digital scraping reeces. The dual filters is cool! But it takes forever to set stuff up.

I guess the Virus is sort of a dream synth that is unequalled. Nice filters, a good general sound along with all the features... but also quick and easy to set up a neat patch. z3ta is the closest to match ing the Virus. It can do alot more than the Virus... But it just isn't a Virus... for better or worse. Then there's the Alesis ION and Nord Lead which are all in the same ball park. Lot's and lot's of different features... which VSTi's don't seem to have.

Wow I said alot and probably created redundancies and contradictions but I'm too lazy to reread. All I want is my dream synth. And to waste your time. Help

I can send samples and create patches for you, or a filter sweep. it's got a nice Moog ladder filter. I love the filter! sounds much better than any of Arturia's! it has grime and dirt and drive. god i need to shut up now

Well the guy above me basically said it. It doesn't really sound analog, the oscs aren't very good if you turn off all the effects (including the analog boost which is on in the blank patch), hell if I remember correctly they actually run at half the sample rate. The filters are great but they don't really sound like analog filters, though I haven't messed with the stuff they added to the C. You can find synths with better all-around modulation possibilities, like the Q for example (though they can both do things the other can't...), or va modulars. The wavetables aren't set up to be swept though cleanly. I'm sure there are plenty of other criticisms that you could aim at it.

Great synth anyway, sounds awesome once you put a whole patch together. I love mine. I don't have any samples handy, though, and it's actually in the box because I'm selling it (so I can get a TI here before too long... Smile ).

@ nibbzious: Shit! Shit! Shit! ( Laughing )

This is muuuch more than a sample!!! Thanks! Very Happy

You could have your dreams' vst, one day, if you contribute with samples to these two synths:

www.sknote.it "software" page

If you still want, you can send samples to my mail through kvr here... evolving events are the best. Examples:

- A fat oscillator through a sweeping filter
- A dull oscillator through overdrive that increases
- ...

er... I'm sorry but I'm not quite sure I understand... a fat oscillator and a dull oscillator? do you mean unison? or 1 osc then 2 osc mix? cause I don't think a Virus has an oscillator other than dull HiHi

And theres a bazillion options to choose from for a filter sweep. A dozen drive algorithms... each algorithm has drive amount. 12db, 24db, 36db. There's quite a bit of combinations. I don't want to give you a filter sweep at 12 db and you think it's 24db with drive or something and everything goes to hell. what exactly do you need? like half resonance then full? or 64, 100, 127? and other stuff like that.

oh yea...I'm recording...through a...BEHRINGER MIXER!!!!! NFGHDFH!HJ!HJ! NOOOOOOOO!@$OKOFKSDF WHY SIGNAL WHY

I compose with the KC. What exactly are you wanting?
Just a single played note with a filter sweep? I can tell you one thing, the filters don't zipper at all Love

@nibbzious & @Mighty_Hero:

This two would be very useful:

- First sample: One saw osc (no detune, no lfo, no envelope) through a 36dB 50% res lp filter. A single note. the sound starts from full closed filter and goes to full open filter in about 5 secs

- Second sample: A sine osc (no detune, no lfo, no envelope) through overdrive. The sound starts with no overdrive and goes to max overdrive slowly in about 5 secs

If you want to make me happy (and gain a free copy of the next vst synth Very Happy )
add a third sample that makes something hard to do with another synth Rolling Eyes

That would be great Love
