What synth can make a nice formant lead like the one in KW's Neon Lights?
I tried all the formant synths and they don't seem to be geared toward it..

Have you tried Vbox-X from http://www.krakli.co.uk (on the 'legacy plugs' page)?
I managed to knock up a similar sound using that, patch is here. that's if we're talking about the same sound, anyway

according to http://www.synthmuseum.com/moog/moomini01.html it's the MINIMOOG MODEL-D. so you can buy ARTURIA MINIMOOG (200EUR) or the STEINBERG MODEL-E (included in Cubasis5 for 30EUR) or try some Free/Donationware like Antti's Asynth.

Hrmmmm...
Maybe the bass - But I don't the lead formant lead is a Mini Moog. MM doesn't have a formant filter, and that's a more light airy sound....

I got the synths but the link to your patch is down.

rightclick on "here" and then save as "neonlicht.fxp" ...
| vista | Posted: 2nd January 2005 01:29 | |||
hi lardpony, thanks, but can you offer a .fxb-file instead of .fxp to us ?
| lardpony | Posted: 2nd January 2005 03:03 | |||
ok... http://www.lardpony.co.uk/vst/neonlicht.fxb
hopefully the first preset in this bank is the one I've made (rest are all from default bank). it's not perfect but it's pretty close to the sound in neon lights and with a bit of tweaking could probably be spot-on. I hope!

What has Steinbergs Model-E to do with a MiniMoog? It has the same Design and Structure but nothing more... @kodama I'm pretty sure you can do nice Formant Sounds with the Arturia MoogModularV... Daniel

Actually, I can't hear a formant synth sound in this particular track.

where's V box x then? Do you mean Vurtbox?
| kodama | Posted: 2nd January 2005 09:49 | |||
You have to click on the legacy/discontinued synths.
I'm talking about the lead sound that sounds like vaguely like a girl singing "waaa". Lardpony - you're on the right track! I wonder what synth they actually used?

What do you wanna tell us ?
| daniel-b | Posted: 2nd January 2005 10:35 | |||
I own the Model-E and it sounds crap, if you compare it to a Moog(!). Listen to the filter, envelopes, fm and oscillators.
Model-E is for sure a nice SoftSynth, but a bad Moog emulation... Daniel

Arguing over people's preferences really makes no sense.
There is no more moral or logical arguement to be made anymore than there is to be made about what your favorite color is.

If you can hold on a bit MiniMonster by G-Media/Ohm Force has the Mini Moog sound nailed and does really nice replications of what you're probably looking for.
Arturia's MMV 2 has a formant filter and though a lot more learning curve than the Mini Moog it has a vast array of sounds; if you're into the Moog thing. There is a incredible free synth called GalactiX. It's in the KVR synth database. You may also want to try Pentagon 1 if your budget is tight. This is an incredibly capable synth and has been a staple in many users synth libraries for over 3 years now. Last and certainly not least; Reaktor Sessions which gives you access to exactly what you want within it's library. At $250 it is one of the best bargains made imo. There are dozens of synths available in the user library that deal with formant filters with analog and FM. Other synths that will do what you want include: VirSyn TERA 2, if you want to program and learn many types of synthesis slower (no sampling though) this is probably the most versitile synth and will do exactly what you want. It has a major formant filter that has so many assignment capabilities you head will spin, about $230 - 250. VirSyn CUBE 1.5, an additive synth that can do formant synthesis in a cold or warm way due to the 4 additive oscillators which go from 1 to 512 partials, one oscillator can do what you want but two will make it much more efficent at what it's doing.

He did something, then thought better of it.
The sign of a truely evolving mind Thanks for the replies everyone! Yeah I was just thinking yesterday that Tera may come closest to matching that sound.
