No it's not a new plug-in. I just wanted to officially complain that I didn't get a freakin' chocolate bunny this year and that just sucks. I mean, someone has to GIVE one to you. You look like an ass if you buy one for yourself. "Umm, give me some chewing tobacco, this 6 pack and uh.... how about this chocolate bunny?"

Oh well. There is always next year.

Let me ask you something though. Do you mind when the chocolate bunny is hollow? Do you feel jipped or is that just fine with you? For me it depends. If it is a big bunny then it would take forever to eat a solid chocolate version so it could be hollow and that's okay with me. But, if it is smaller then it kind of pisses me off a little. Not a lot, just a little.

Oh yeah. What were we talking about? VSTis? Oh. Sorry. Now back to your regularly scheduled debate over... um, what was it?

By the way, some of you regulars have been scarce. I guess we better release a few new products to give you guys something to talk about. Perhaps some of you DR008 users might be happy to know that we are working on a kick-ass native format drum library for it. Smile Any requests?

I refuse to buy hollow chocolate bunnies. The only one I bought this year was for my 3 1/2 year old great nephiew. My staff got Dove eggs. Those were good. Funny you mention buying for yourself. I started to buy one today at the grocery. They had a table of easter candy but someone forgot to price the merchandice. I don't buy hollow bunnies, and I don't buy anything that does not have a price on it.

Some of them chocolate. (Unfortunately some had been created with SynthEdit - hahahaha.)

Hollow is fine with me.

No chocolate bunny for me either Squids, and I actually like em hollow. After a while my jaw gets tired from biting into the solid ones.

How about next Easter we all chip in to send our favorite developers some nice baskets (or would that be too religious? any non-religous basket sending holidays?)?

Hi Squids. I am a Dr008 user (by far, the best VSTi drum machine!).
So, I would definitely be interested in multi-sampled, velocity layered sets of acoustic drums.
Note that DR008 doesn't need electronic drum samples; the synthesis capabilities are so good that sampled 808s etc. are redundant.
I would gladly beta test your library!

P.S. In the UK we tend to go for Easter Eggs more than Bunnies.
I got one Egg, but found out the day after Easter.
Does it still count?

In my day, the egg was hollow, with a packet of chocolates inside.
Now, they have a holow egg with the sweets bubble packed outside. Guess it cuts down manufacturing cost.

No , no, chocolates filled with crunchy-frog is nasty stuff

Inspector Praline: (to camera) Hello. (he walks in followed by Superintendent Parrot and goes to desk) Mr Milton? You are sole proprietor and owner of the Whizzo Chocolate Company?

Milton: I am.

Praline: Superintendent Parrot and I are from the hygiene squad. We want to have a word with you about your box of chocolates entified The Whizzo Quality Assortment.

Milton: Ah, yes.

Praline: : (producing box of chocolates) If I may begin at the beginning. First there is the cherry fondue. This is extremely nasty, but we can't prosecute you for that.

Milton: Agreed.

Praline: Next we have number four, 'crunchy frog'.

Milton: Ah, yes.

Praline: Am I right in thinking there's a real frog in here?

Milton: Yes. A little one.

Praline: What sort of frog ?

Milton: A dead frog.

Praline: Is it cooked?

Milton: No.

Praline: What, a raw frog?

(Superintendent Parrot looks increasingly queasy.)

Milton: We use only the finest baby frogs, dew picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and then sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope and lovingly frosted with glucose.

Praline: That's as maybe, it's still a frog.

Milton: What else?

Praline: Well don't you even take the bones out?

Milton: If we took the bones out it wouldn't be crunchy would it?

Praline: Superintendent Parrot ate one of those.

Parrot: Excuse me a moment. (exits hurriedly)

Milton: It says 'crunchy frog' quite clearly.

Praline: Well, the superintendent thought it was an almond whirl. People won't expect there to be a frog in there. They're bound to think it's some form of mock frog.

Milton: (insulted) Mock frog? We use no artificial preservatives or additives of any kind!

Praline: Nevertheless, I must warn you that in future you should delete the words 'crunchy frog', and replace them with the legend 'crunchy raw unboned real dead frog', if you want to avoid prosecution.

Milton: What about our sales?

Praline: I'm not interested in your sales, I have to protect the general public. Now how about this one. (superintendent enters) It was number five, wasn't it? (superintendent nods) Number five, ram's bladder cup. (exit superintendent) What kind of confection is this?

Milton: We use choicest juicy chunks of fresh Cornish ram's bladder, emptied, steamed, flavoured with sesame seeds whipped into a fondue and garnished with lark's vomit.

Praline: Lark's vomit?

Milton: Correct.

Praline: Well it don't say nothing about that here.

Milton: Oh yes it does, on the bottom of the box, after monosodium glutawate.

Praline: (looking) Well I hardly think this is good enough. I think it would be more appropriate if the box bore a large red label warning lark's vomit.

Milton: Our sales would plummet

Praline: Well why don't you move into more conventional areas of confectionery, like praline or lime cream; a very popular flavour I'm led to understand. (superintendent enters) I mean look at this one, 'cockroach cluster', (superintendent exits) 'anthrax ripple'. What's this one, 'spring surprise'?

Milton: Ah - now, that's our speciality - covered with darkest creamy chocolate. When you pop it in your mouth steel bolts spring out and plunge straight through-both cheeks.

Praline: Well where's the pleasure in that?
If people place a nice chocky in their mouth, they don't want their cheeks pierced. In any case this is an inadequate description of the sweetmeat. I shall have to ask you to accompany me to the station.

Milton: (getting up from desk and being led away) It's a fair cop.

Praline: Stop talking to the camera.

Milton: I'm sorry.

(Superintendent Parrot enters the room as Inspector Praline and Milton leave, and addresses the camera.)

Parrot: If only the general public would take more care when buying its sweeties, it would reduce the number of man-hours lost to the nation and they would spend less time having their stomachs pumped and sitting around in public lavatories.

Klassic K-v-R guys! That's the spirit!

Nice Python import Raven!

A chocolate Squid would be nice but definitely not filled with cream. By the way, does anyone else feel like a box of chocolates is kind of like playing a mild form of Russian roullete? I mean, you bite into one and you never know if it is going to be filled with things MOST people like such as caramel or peanut butter or toffee chips etc. Half the time it is filled with some disgusting creamy substance that resembles various chemicals and assorted fake fruity flavors! YUCH! Does anyone like those? Why not SKIP those and go for the stuff that people really like. Even the coconut doesn't work for me (and yet I like a real coconut).

Yes, sometimes I think to myself that life itself is somewhat like a box of chocolates in that you can never be quite sure exactly what you're going to get though much of the time it's some synthetic gooey fruity substance.

One Christmas I bought my mother a $79 tin of Godiva Chocalots. I found out later that she went through the tin, could not find any chocolate covered nuts, and gave it to my father to eat. She only likes the chocolate covered nuts. I never bought expensive candy for her again. Confused

Several things actually but the main one will be the Studio Drum Capsule. This one has 8 velocity levels on many of the drums and all sorts of other cool things for realistic acoustic drum kits. Then we have other drum flavors to come out in various capsules. This should be released rather soon. Perhaps we will have FXpansion sell a DR008-only version of it for a little less (as the main version will be multi-format in DR008 as well as Battery, Kontakt, EXS, ST and more).

Great news about the DR-008 Squids, I'm glad you decided to support it after all Very Happy ! Will the Studio Drum Capsule have some brush kits too? And is it different source material than the ST format Drum eROM? You mentioned having done some drum sessions recently that seemed to go really well, I'm just wondering if some of those sounds are gonna wind up on this capsule. Keep up the awesome work.
Squids
Posted: 29th April 2003 13:32
Yes, there are brush kits on this one. It's kind of cool to play brush kits with the i-Map too! Instead of the left and right stick drum rolls you have brush snare swirls and it's very realistic. This is a really good drum collection. It doesn't have as much variety of kits but the realism makes up for it. I decided to buy Drums From Hell to see if it was any good. I probably shouldn't give my honest opinion about it especially since I wasn't that impressed and it could look like I was putting it down just because it is a competing product... but I would be the first to admit it was great if it was (just like I have said about other string libraries). Let's just say that without straight up comparing spec for spec I think Studio Drum Capsule sounds a lot better than DFH. It sounds punchier and more expressive but that is our opinion. I will let some of you guys judge for yourselves.

As to the other question, it is not the same kits ported over but some of the elements of the kits may be from a larger archive it draws from. So, for instance, the same Zildian hihat might be used in one of the kits on both but they could very well be different samples of that same hihat perhaps even with different mics or at a different time. But, the kits overall are different and yes there is a bit of the new stuff I have been sampling. We have a large drum archive here though that will take time to go through. It will make it's way into more capsules as well as perhaps a few other things. Wink

I have to say that I am enjoying these new drum sounds a LOT! As time goes on there are improvements in techniques that we've incorporated and just some smart design that has really paid off. It's hard to explain but the more varied and/or expressive these drum kits are the more I get excited because I love to use them myself! Sometimes I am just in awe of the sound. I don't mean that because we captured it but more because I love a good drum sound. I'll be playing it and then yell out to Dan or someone here "Woah! Listen to this SMACK!".

Also, I thought of a couple of tricks to get some extra realism elements into the kit like we did with the adjustable snare rattle amount. I'll share these tricks with you guys once it's released which should be in about a week if we're lucky.
PaintedBlue
Posted: 29th April 2003 13:38
Now I am getting very excited for these kits too! Is the multi-format version the one that will be available soon? I would love to have a version that isn't limited to just the DR-008 format.

I am very keen to hear the new Drum Capsule. And in Dr008 format too. Thanks Dave.

I just saw Raven's post. It still kills me that sketch. Thanks for introducing the Crunchy Frog sketch into the discussion. Somehow the concatentaion of "Whizzo" Chocolates with Dr008 somehow makes me ravenous for a tasty multilayered Drum Capsule cream frog.

Cheers,

Hi Squids. How much (roughly) will a sound capsule cost?
I like the idea of a Dr008 library.
Are you ever in contact with Angus at fxpansion?
He's just started a new topic at KVR, asking DR008 users what we want in updated version. A new, bigger, sound library was on the list...

Sonic Capsules are usually going to be just $99. if we can help it. That means some great value when we are talking about a library like this. I don't think there is anything at that price point that compares. Maybe that sounds bold of me to say perhaps. I am just being honest though. You can all judge for yourself.

As to Angus... yes, we are friends with him and have much respect for his work. In fact, chances are FXPansion will be selling a DR008-only version of this drum library but those details are still to be ironed out. If so, then that would be about $79. for just one format. You save $20. But, the good news is that (being a cool sound developer) we will allow a multiformat upgrade from that for about... $25. so you have some choices even down the road if you have other samplers you want to play that content in.

When this library comes out I will talk all about it. It's really interesting and different. We take the i-Map just a few steps further this time. I added a few things in there that are really cool. I'll tell you one of them. Imagine having a crash cymbal set to be muted (choked) by a choke release sample! It's cool and it works! You know when you grab a real crash cymbal it doesn't stop ringing completely? It "mostly" stops but then there is this decay of ring after it? Well, that ring decay now has a special key in the i-Map and it just so happens to be the key that is the mute group for one of the crashes. Interactive cymbal choking! But that is just one of the cool things this one has. Anyway, we will be doing a whole series of drum capsules with different drums on them so if you like the style of how we program drums then there will be more and more at this bite sized price point for you to dig into.

SR is going drum crazy. Look out!

Posted: 30th April 2003 15:14
Good.

I love new drums, and I love the Acoustic Drums eROM. I'm a sucker for new drumkits.

You know, one of my favorite things about these kits is that there are about 4 different snares that all sound very similar, but just different enough that when you alternate between them and give them a little bit of "humanizing" you have something that sounds like a real drummer! Smile

Posted: 30th April 2003 23:30
Hi Squids. I'm being greedy now, but here goes:
The drum library you describe sounds fantastic. The realism would work perfectly in Drumagog (I designed the Drumagog Gui, by the way).
Drumagog uses multi-layered samples to replace real drums (you probably know that already, being a drum maniac).
www.drumagog.com

So, could you add drumagog format to your multi-format capsule?
Thanks.

Hey Ed. That is pretty cool! I didn't know about this actually. Get me both versions and I'll swap you NFRs of equal value from SR in exchange. If it is something we can integrate in what we are doing I would be open to that for sure. I can't promise anything of course (don't want to get into trouble) but I really am very open minded about such things.
