Hi y'all.
Now that the CS-80V set is finally done, I'm starting a bank for the PPG Wave 2.V. If any Pro-Sounds customers would like to give a suggestion or two as to what I should put in it, you are more than welcome to do so.
....ah hell...I'll do a poll as well

.

I tend to "type cast" synths. I'm probably doing them a disservice but I guess it's just my way of dealing with having too many VSTi:s in the first place.

PPG Wave 2.V would be my go-to synth for when I need "a bit of synth" to fill out an arrangement without taking it over. Some nice arp and keyboard sounds that have character without being overpowering. Unobtrusive without being bland if that makes any sense. Can you do that?
By VSTi standards, PPG Wave 2.V is absolutely ancient but I still think it's a very useful and versatile synth so it's good to se you making new sounds for it. Not having any on-board FX I guess some people might find it a bit thin-sounding but for my purposes it's perfect. I see there are already 3 PPG packs at ProSounds. Knowing my needs, which one should I go for first (don't think I can afford all of them right now)?

I certainly will

. Like you, I also find this synth to be very fitting for those types of sounds, so I will make a point to include plenty. Thanks for the input...very much appreciated.

As for what is on there already...I did not make those, so I would have no idea as to what to expect.
After I get a few good keys and arps down, I'll post an mp3 for ya.

Here you go, Yoss. Keys and Arp sounds. This what you're looking for?
http://www.uploading.com/files/P75F5QFJ/KeysAndArpsPPG.mp3.html
The download is hidden in the middle of the page amongst all the ads lol.
Jeremy_NSL - Sat Mar 17, 2007 11:18 am
Just something to keep in mind: there are two different versions of PPG Wave - the Steinberg distributed and the Waldorf distributed versions. Are they preset compatible? I can't answer that question. But you should find out if you haven't already. Good luck with the project,
Jeremy
Oh and you should get some mp3 webspace... That ad-riddled page is pretty bad.

Some modern sounds, please....there is so much banks on the net with traditional sound!!!!

Yes, something along those lines. This sounds like a pretty good start. Looking forward to the finished set.

@Yossarian: Cool beanz

. Good to know I'm on the right track.
@tekalo: No problem, bud. I have a preference for modern sounds, myself, so the set will have plenty of those as well.
....Hey, anyone know if there are any compatability issues for presets between the two versions of PPG (Waldorf/Steinberg)? I have the original, not the one included in the bundle.
tekalo - Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:21 pm
cool Xenos..... no more pads, pianos, bells and others!!!

yep. unfortunately the older (steinberg) presets won't load in the new (waldorf) version.

Wait so the new waldorf presets wont load in the old steinberg one either?
Hey mr, patch maker please make DARK sinister, menacing basslines, and LONg EVOLVING TEXTURES. A lot of the ppg patches out there are weak and video gamish. Evolving pads with the ppg would be awesome. Also, if you could do sounds with automatic hammer ons it would be nice.

Sorry parma, but you're wrong about that. Our PPG Pack, up for sale at the Pro-Sounds site, was made on the old steinberg edition...I've got the newer waldorf version of the PPGWave right here and the old steinberg presets are loading just fine.
Peace

Sorry to go OT for a sec . . but I have the original Steinberg version with the 1.2 steinberg update. My question is, does the new Waldorf version work with midi CCs ok? I haven't been able to get any of the Steinbug versions to respond to them. The newer version supposedly has a different way of using automation. I would buy the synth again if I knew it would work with CCs with the Waldorf version. (sucks they don't offer a upgrade path for early Steinberg adopters; they were planning to according the to the Waldorf forum)
Thanks!
Xenos - I voted for vintage.

Alhough I love ambient/furturistic, too.

I haven't used it in tracking much, so I can't say. I'm not sure if you're asking whether it responds to midi control (which it does) or if it responds to vst automation (which it should

). What host were/are you using?
Either way though, our sound-set will load into both the steinberg and the Waldorf versions, judging from my testing.
Peace

Thanks ToTc. I'm using SONAR and have used Logic. I was wondering about Midi control. The other synths I have respond to midi control, but the PPG hasn't, no matter what I've tried. It used to be that way in Logic and still seems that way in SONAR.
I would really love to program this synth (my favorite) with my BCR2000. hmmmm.
Anyway, thanks for the reply ToTc. I'll have to keep investigating.

IIRC, sonar uses an adapter to make a vst plugin a directx plugin...or have they changed that? If not, that could be why. I beleive that Waldorf has a demo for the new versions up on their website, I would download that and try it out with the automation.
This quote is from the websites features list for the PPGWave 2.V:
"Real-time MIDI control and automation of all parameters"
And it says there is a demo of it available
HERE
Hope that helps.

Nice! I didn't even think to see if there was a demo for the new version. Thanks!
SONAR now uses VST without an adapter. The new plugin manager is cool.
Yeah, I thought it should respond to midi control (CCs in the manual), just for some reason it doesn't seem to work for me. I wonder sometimes if could have to do with it being multitimbral. I've tried OMNI and specific channels to no avail.
Anyway, thanks ToTc for trying to help me out.
Xenos, I'm very sorry for going OT. I'd to ask ToTc that quick question, though. I can't wait to hear the sounds you come up with. =)
I'll grab
all the soundsets once the new ones are up for purchase, too.
Long live the PPG!!

Ah, then it must just be the intel mac update that isn't compatible with old banks. I've tried loading old banks and all I get is gibberish text for preset names and no sound. I think waldorf have posted this incompatibility issue somewhere but I can't seem to find it on their site. I'll keep looking...
parma - Sat Mar 17, 2007 9:08 pm
ok - I figured it out. It is a compatibility issue between the new waldorf versions and Live (both of which I use). Instead of using Live's "Open" dialog, you have to import the .fxb from the plugin by shift-clicking on the PROG button and then selecting the bank. Once you do this, you can then save the bank as a new .fxb that will load with having to do the import business.
So you are right Totc - but I knew there was some kind of issue. I'm actually glad I looked into this because now I know how to use the old banks!
Xenos - Sun Mar 18, 2007 12:32 am
Dang! The PPG plug is more popular than I thought

. Lots of requests here, so I am going to have to expand beyond the typical 128 for this bank and include the rest in a "bonus" fxb, like I did with Vanguard (which had exactly 140 sounds). By the way, I did NOT make the 3 banks for PPG that are on Pro-Sounds right now

...The credit for that goes to someone else lol.

Once I'm satisfied with the vintage sounds, these are next....already got a few in there I think you would appreciate

. In the right hands, this little synth can push out some decent fodder for a horror movie soundtrack.
....BTW, you have Wusikstation 3? The Tesseract soundset I put out for Pro-Sounds is filled to the brim with sounds fitting those descriptions.
Buka - Tue Mar 20, 2007 2:34 am
oh i see someone else likes this synth...one of my favorites....
what i would like is more basses....couse this synth does the best basses of them all...
keep up the good work...
ps: if i could only make my one wavetables for this synth it would be the only synt i
use
Xenos - Tue Mar 20, 2007 3:24 am
I'll get right on it

. I like the basses on the PPG, too...very punchy and full of character.
Xenos - Wed Mar 21, 2007 1:49 am
Bumpity-bump.
Any more suggestions/votes?
So far, this bank is looking to be pretty heavy on sounds inspired by TD, Numan, Art of Noise, etc, in keeping with the poll results. I'm putting a number of signature sounds in there as well.
BTW, Buka...I added some more bass in there for ya.
Buka - Wed Mar 21, 2007 2:16 am
hy thanx mate for the basses
im using this "semitones" part of the synth to make some strange detuned timbres=great for pads and leads...maybe some patches that use this facility would be great

You request is noted

. Already got a few, but I'll add more tomorrow morning.
OK...bank is a little over half finished. Let's get some more votes/suggestions, people...Time's runnin' out

. As it looks so far, this bank will be heavy on vintage sounds.
BTW...if there is any particular lead, pad, bass or whatever from a certain song you are looking for, either let me know or post a short clip and I can try to match it (try, that is...cannot garuntee absolute perfection).

the depeche mode sounds from "Broken Frame", "Construction Time Again" & "Some Great Reward" perhaps? pretty please ??
Xenos - Thu Mar 22, 2007 2:16 pm
Hey thanks, States

. I'll go over to amazon.com and see if I can get some decent clips, then I'll see what I can do. I've had a serious case of writer's block these last few days, so these suggestions come in mighty handy

.

Working on sounds from A Broken Flame now...already nailed the chimes from the beginning of "My Secret Garden" to a "T"

. Look for the patch "SYN_Secret Garden Chimes" to find it.
Come to think of it, I'm gonna buy that album...officially a Depeche Mode fan now hehe. Thanks for pointing me to some good tunes.

"A Broken Flame"

it's "A Broken Frame" mate

. If you're gonna be a DM fan...
Yup, there are heaps of PPG sounds there.

A bit of EVERYTHING!! GLAD to see this AMAZING instrument is still alive! More than ANYTHING, I'd like to see Steinberg continue development on it. This baby was just WAY ahead of it's time!!

No need for steinberg...Waldorf themselves pickd it back up.

You can get the whole Waldorf collection for something like $70.00 in the SweetWater Catalog...just got the new spring issue (BTW SweetWater, NOT a good time to send me a gear catalog, when I'm trying to afford advertising, shame on you!

).

he he! glad you liked DM!!! look for archetypical PPG sounds on the following tracks:
See You / The meaning of Love / Nothing to Fear (the FANTASTIC HARPSICHORD in the intro) / The Sun & the Rainfall - on "A Broken Frame"
Love in Itself (almost all of it IS the PPG) / More than a Party (bells & chimes) / Two minute warning (that Harpsichord again!!) / the Landscape is Changing (the hard synth Brass in particular!) - on "Construction Time Again"
Almost all of the S&H Rez-Filtered sounds and the brass on "Some Great Reward"
All of the synth bells & sweeps on "Black Celebration"
Also, you could check out "Audentity" & "Trancefer" by Klaus Schulze.
woah!!! this is gonna be so cool!!!!!!
thank you! thank you! thank you!!!

umm... Xenos, is there a repository where you keep these presets for testing?? where can i find the SYN_Secret Garden Chimes ??
Xenos - Sat Mar 24, 2007 12:09 pm
lol...I'm sorry for the confusion. That's just the name of that sound in the bank. I don't have a place for downloading presets. To make it up to ya, though, I'll post a short mp3 demo of some more of the sounds in a few days. I'm sure others are curious as well.
states - Sat Mar 24, 2007 3:10 pm
very cool of you!! eagerly awaiting for your first results!!!
Xenos - Sat Mar 24, 2007 5:32 pm
OK...here is a quick demo of some of the sounds in context. Please excuse the sloppy playing. Everything was improvised on the spur of the moment except the bass and drums, plus I wanted to get it out as quickly as possible so I can get back to the patching lol.

the harpsichord sound from LOGOS partI (the same as in the intro of Nothing to Fear & Two minute Warning by Depeche)!!!!
woah!!!!
cant wait!!

The bank is now done, folks

. I just sent it to Frank for packaging/testing. I don't know how much it's gonna cost yet or the exact release date (other than "very soon" hehe).
states - Tue Mar 27, 2007 1:17 pm
very cool!! so, what classic goodies have you included?
Xenos - Tue Mar 27, 2007 2:33 pm
Off the top of my head....the lead from Outland (Gary Numan)(Patch name will be "LED_Outlandish"), the "harpsichord" arp from the intro of "Nothing to Fear"(KBD_Nothing to Fear"-- I detected velocity on the filter. Play it right and you'll nail it.), chimes from "My Secret Garden", the metallic stab sounds from Klaus Schulze's "Trancefer" ("SYN_Trancefer"...not so sure he used a PPG though), a bunch of basses from across the board, keys and pads that I've heard here and there, etc.
Please bear in mind that as I was limited to listening to demos from Amazon.com, I may or may not have got the sounds absolutely perfect-- I often have to listen to an entire track to get all the little nuances of the sound that may not be apparent in a 30 second clip, and also the fact that listening to a sound in a mix is quite different than listening to it dry and by itself (with the entire track handy, you'll likely find parts where the sound you are trying to emulate is a bit more up front, which helps quite a bit provided it isn't drenched in reverb lol).
Those things aside, I think you will find the vintage emulations in the bank quite recognizable.
TotcProductions - Tue Mar 27, 2007 2:42 pm
For those wondering about prices and release dates:
The bank will cost you 19.95 Euro if you've never purchased from Pro-Sounds before, and 15.96 Euro (via the 20% loyalty discount all registered customers receive on new releases) if you have.
The bank will be released late this Thursday, and press releases will go out on Friday morning.
Peace
