KVR :: Effects » The KVR Guitar Players Thread - links to great guitar posts [View Original Topic]
There are 138 posts in this topic. Page: 1 2
ionized - Sat Sep 08, 2007 5:45 pm
Since there is no dedicated guitar forum on KVR, this thread will become the official spot to post links to threads and posts that are scattered around in various forums that would be of special interest to guitar players.
When posting, please include direct links to the threads/posts along with a short description of the contents. If you are referring to a specific post on a page, please point out which one it is (unless there is a way to link directly to a specific post). And please stay on topic. If things get too far out of hand, a mod may have to wade in here and clean things up.
From time to time I will update this first post with the newest links so that we can keep them all in one place.
I know that there are other websites that cater to the computer recording guitarist, but many of us only frequent KVR and there has been a lot of great info posted here that deserves to be easily found. So help everyone out by posting links to old and new threads that you know about.
Who knows - if this thread is popular enough, maybe KVR will add a guitar forum someday.
I'll start things off with a link to the amazing KVR thread length champion (at least it's the longest product focused one I've ever seen):
The never-ending 352 page epic saga of the about-to-be-released Amplitube 2:
Topic: Amplitube 2 Jimi Hendrix RELEASED this month!!!
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=105637
...and the follow-on thread that needs more attention as it's only on page 7 as of today:
Topic: The Return of the Son of Shut Up and Play Your AT2JHE
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=183336
And then there is another massively long thread that a certain dev probably wishes didn't exist. This one has made it to 236 pages so far...
Topic: Guitar players, The soundclick MP3 demo page got updated!
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50312
OK, so these aren't the most helpful threads but I wanted to ackowledge the longest (and most notorious) ones first. Of course there's some of the usual internet groundhogging, hand-wringing, bitching, and flaming going on in some of these threads, but there is some really good info also (as well as some really funny stuff). If anyone wants to point out specific stuff from any of these threads - do it!
Another thing I wanted to accomplish is getting all of the best software guitar rig ideas in one place. For example, I have seen several of Guitarzan's posts on his multi-vst freeware guitar rig experiments and they are scattered around in multiple threads. I would really like to see his rigs posted in one place, as well as what other people come up with. And maybe we could have one place where all of Dimitar's great demos are listed. And maybe....

Um... Well...thanks Ron for that informative post but it isn't really for guitarists is it?
Please - only post stuff for guitar players, not wanna be keyboard players who can only look on with envy
Seriously, there are plenty of other threads for the keyboard players. Leave this thread for (real) guitar related information.

Effects? Why not hardware? All my guitar doodads are hardware. No software to bastardize the sound.
ionized - Sat Sep 08, 2007 6:58 pm
'Cause this is KVR.

Hardware related to the recording process is OK to talk about (like DIs, pre-amps, miking techniques, etc...). Heck, I like to talk about guitar hardware (guitars, amps, stompboxes, etc...) also but there are lots of other great places to do that. Let's keep this focused on software and hardware related to recording into DAWs.
taijiguy - Sat Sep 08, 2007 7:17 pm
Oh yeah. Stupid butt me. Nowadays you need software to record hardware. How I miss those 16 and 24 track tape machines.
Anyway, I'm still using real guitars into hardware effects into a hardware mixer into a hardware sound card before Cubase does it's software dirty work. Being a purist nowadays is a real struggle.

Is it cool if I gloat about picking up Guitar Rig 2 on this thread?
ionized - Sat Sep 08, 2007 8:19 pm
Taji - no worries. Keep the hardware faith as long as you can. I also still prefer plugging into stompboxes and amps but you can't deny the flexibility of software.
Debra - gloat away! But as payment for that license to gloat, please post a link to a cool guitar thread to help this thread get rolling.

OK, so like I'd been using the Guitar Rig 2 demo more and more in my tunes, so I broke down and got it for my birthday. It got marked down to $349 USD thru Amazon.com / AudioMidi.com and because of an earlier return, AudioMidi gave me an extra 10% off

On top of that I paid more than half of that with Amazon gift cards I got for my b'day, so that was kewl...
I've only had it like a couple weeks and used it on a couple songs already, but I don't feel like I've even scratched the surface, mostly because I'm comparatively a noob on guitar compared to my keyboard and bass playing. I'm still just trying out all the presets so far, but I'm looking forward to creating some screwed up patches with it.
If I had to register any disappointment (and really I don't), it was no longer being able to buy the software only version on Amazon, because while the pedal is cool, i already have a Tascam 1804 firewire interface, so the USB interface on the GR2 pedal is abit redundant for me, but i still wanted the pedal anyway, so a very small complaint at that... And I believe I can register the software on another computer (any info other users might have would be appreciated), so the guitarist in my band can borrow the pedal aa an interface for recording on Cubase on his PC, so that's a bonus at least. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase, but ymmv because like I said I'm somewhat of a guitar noob and not the tone freak like I know some of you are (not that it's a bad thing)

Ron, don't let it get to you. I don't want to get in the middle of this because I can see both sides, but i do know that some people are a bit protective of threads they start because it's easy to get off track... probably mostly due to nutcases like me hijacking their threads...
I can see how there's a classification thing going on here as Virtual Guitarist is classified more as a Virtual Instrument than an effect, members and mods seem to be very interested in keeping everything in its proper category. But I would encourage you to start a thread in Instruments because i think programs like that are interesting and I for one would like to learn more. I'd check it out, Ron!
OK, I promise I'll stick to topic now and let's all remember some respect so we can all benefit from this thread

Being a purist these days is really expensive. I use a real guitar and have a hardware multi-fx pedal that I often use a blank or simple compressor patch for DI recording, but cant really afford much more than that. Hardware is pricey these days (and so is the space required to keep it all). And to quote Tom Scholz (Boston, for those who don't know): "Also, consider the use of technology as an instrument".

Aw c'mon Ron. Not trying to pick a fight with you - just trying to keep this thread on topic so that it doesn't become too much of a mish-mash of stuff.

Debra's got the right idea - please go start another thread about virtual guitar products.

IN fact its all old.
Aluminum foil and thumb tacks?
IN 2007 its called copper shielding tape. It comes in nice handy rolls for cheap, and can be applied very easily and quickly. And get this its "tape" so it sticks in the elctronics cavity/pickguard etc... It works WAY better than crappy foil with thumb tacks.
He was talkin about molding epoxy with motor oil in a slow cooker??? WTF!! Who in their right mind would ever do such a thing..
60 cycle hum problem?? Guess what there are a zillion single coil pickups out there that have no noise!!! If you want vintage, then get the single coils with 60 cycle hum, its part of the charm...
Potting a pickup in laquer?? Old school and not used anymore.. the reason most manufacturers use Wax is becasue its much easier to repair a pickup that has been potted in wax, If you so desire, although with all the replacement pickups out there nowadays most would just buy a replacement.
Pickups potted in Laquer will make the coil windings brittle and they would break if you ever wanted to repair it. Same thing with people who pot pickups in Epoxy (I.E Bill Lawrence, EMG i belive) these pickups are almost impossible to repair... But they are quiet.... Good tradeoff, since they realize most people arent repairing pickups too often anymore.
There is a ton more, but I dont feel like reading thru all that rubbish again...

So far he has explained how to add and replace magnets in a pickup for experimental new tones and how to rewire a Strat to get some unusual pickup combinations. I don't see anything retarded about that - and what would be an easier way to do those things? Get somebody else to do it for you or grab something off the shelf?
Seems most people are only interested in sounding exactly like someone else nowdays, it's good to see some of the rock-n-roll experimental spirit still alive IMO!

Yeah, I've posted a bunch of them...my post on this thread:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=183839&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=105 covers the post-amp sim part of my setup that really doesn't seem to change much no matter what amp-sim I use with. This post amp setup mostly strives to emulate physical presence - mic placement, speaker distortion, room ambience and also the compressors add to the touch sensitivity. It doesn't cover speaker sims - if the amp-sim I'm using doesn't have built in speaker emulation that I like I usually use IRs loaded in ReValver 2's RIR module or Boogex (set mostly clean) and I'm going to try out keFIR next. There are probably dozens of these types of plugins that would work instead of the ones I have been using - experimentation is the most important and funnest part of the whole deal!
Really, the things in that post cover most of what I do with all my guitar rigs, it works with ReValver, Studio Devil BVC, CrunchDude, Nick Crow's Wagner Sharp, SA Guitar Suite etc, etc. so I think I'll move on and post a link my favorite recent KVR guitar thread:
Amp sims as, well, amp sims
It had a few cool things going on: a complete new tune by Dimitar Nalbantov using ReValver MK II, a proposed open collaboration on a unique guitar distortion/amp-sim creation plug by Mokafix, FrettedSyth popped in with a short statement about the upcoming FA3 (more details here:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2694991) and some speculation about the future of amp sims.
I'll try to post links for some other interesting recent KVR guitar threads when I get a chance to look them up.

Sascha Franck - Tue Sep 11, 2007 8:46 am
Talking about software amp sims, one of my oldest "tricks" (adopted from my old hardware rig and not exactly a trick either):
Put an EQ both in front and behind the amp sim. The pre-EQ will allow you to shape the distortion characteristics while the post-EQ might even out too harsh boosts without reducing distortion.
Example: You want a lead sound that has creamy highs but isn't too muddy in the low area. For this, I would boost the highs (even quite a bit) and probably lower the low mids and basses with the pre-EQ. Now, this might sound rather shrill, so that's when the post-EQ kicks in. You could just do the almost opposite EQing there, just with less cut/boost as the overdrive will "catch up" some of the pre-EQ boost.

I replaced magnets in my pickups quite often. Not really a "new" thing at all. And like I said his pickup wiring can be found anywhere on the net..
As far as "sounding" like someone else, that category doesnt befall me, I hot rod all my guitars, amps, pickups, wiring, you name it.. SOme of the things he has mentioned are either completely out of date, or so out of whack it makes no sense to try what he is stating..

Hi Sacha,
This had me baffled as well, but all you need to do is download a song, unzip/rar it, then double click the song name and it runs as it's a self ex file. I've just downloaded Little Wing and it's not bad at all, there's even the option to slow down the playback. This site is a nice find.

Don't know if this is the right place to be telling you this but I've posted a "DEFAULT AMPS" bank for Guitar Rig 3:
http://www.kvraudio.com/banks.php
Here's the attached blurb:
No new sounds but something useful for those of us that just want to grab an amp and play: a "Default Amps" bank for GR3 - nothing but the 12 amps with their default cabinets. The default cabinet module has two microphones so there's a second set of presets for use on a stereo track with a dual cabinet setup, one panned hard left with mic A and the other panned hard right with mic B. The amp settings and cabinet dry/air settings are default.
Here's the list of presets:
1 FENDER TWEED DELUXE
2 VOX AC30
3 FENDER BASSMAN
4 ROLAND JC120
5 FENDER TWIN REVERB
6 ORANGE
7 HIWATT
8 MARSHALL PLEXI
9 MARSHALL JCM800
10 MESA BOOGIE
11 BOGNER
12 AMPEG SVT
13 FENDER TWEED DELUXE dual cab
14 VOX AC30 dual cab
15 FENDER BASSMAN dual cab
16 ROLAND JC120 dual cab
17 FENDER TWIN REVERB dual cab
18 ORANGE dual cab

OK - obviously I haven't been keeping this thread updated and it hasn't gotten much attention from others here at KVR. To all who did post here - Thanks! But I'm not surprised that this approach to gathering the guitar related data hasn't worked very well. I have to admit that I lost interest in trying to maintain it when few other people were adding stuff. There are some really good threads and posts related to guitars on KVR and I had hoped that a separate forum would be established so that the threads would stay in one area. When I saw that a separate forum wasn't going to happen, I decided (or maybe Guitarzan decided - I can't remember) to start this thread. But it's a bit of a hassle to find the good stuff, copy a link, write up something about it, and post it in this thread. But I finally discovered the power of the little red bullseye in the upper right hand corner of the webpage - the KVRmark. Now when I see something that I want to have access to later, I use the KVRmark system to tag it and then I can have links to all of my favorite threads and posts in one spot. Quick and easy - pretty cool. There may be a way to make the KVRmarks public and categorize them for the benefit of all. Maybe the KVR guitarheads can work together for a guitar KVRmark page.
Anyway, a guitar-focused forum is still a good idea and Dimitar (a great guitarist and a KVR regular) has just started a forum that looks like a good place for computer recording guitarists to hang out at. See this thread for more info:

http://frettedsynth.com
SafFron2VA is a virtual analog guitar synth
SafFron2w is to trigger .wav files with up to four velocity split .wav's
SafFron2L will trigger soundfont .sf2 files
All have very low latency for a audio triggered synth, have very easy setup of their trigger, respond to velocity and offer MIDI out with the internal synth.
Hope you find them useful?

Hello Johnny
Hope you enjoy them? been working on these since about 2002 when I started this in SyncModular (still love that app) not perfect but not too sure it will ever be perfect? You still need to learn to play them like any other instrument. Not too fond of MIDI for audio tracking myself but along with the low latency of the internal synth MIDI can be real useful for its polyphonic release and some of the great VSTi's out there.
Peace
Fretted Synth
edit: BTW cool stuff you build also, Thanks

Wow, how did I miss this thread (o.k., so I ignore all *stickies* in the forums ha-ha) when I've been doing my PodFarm/Gearbox preset give aways ?!

My bad. So I figure this is at least 51% on topic, even though I'm gonna save any KvR guitar players who read this the trouble of dealing with my one-a-day give away threads.
If you have Line 6 PodFarm or Gearbox software, and would like the 'Best Of' Tone Sets promotional patch collection, just pm me with your email address (and of course mention what it is you are after, since I do loop sample give aways quite often too, and can in fact get confused ha-ha) and I'll shoot you out 192 patches, 32 from each of the 6 Tone Sets.
acousticglue - Wed Jul 22, 2009 12:00 pm
I have the POD XT Pro and all patches, I also own the Roalnd VG-99 for triggering the soft synths i purchase. I generally examine how the guitar does on triggering of sounds as opposed to keys. Using the USB connection i can trigger VSTs in DAW or just use VG99 or both or midi VSTis. So it goes without saying, there are way too many choices taking this route.

I read some of these posts, but not all. I really like the VGA Studio Devil that came with Sonar HS 7 XL. It sounds good in EXT 2.5. The Guitar Amp in XT isn't bad, either. The Simulanalog Univibe sounds awesome. Also, Sinusweb's Multilens is a great effect - I can do the Hendrix reverse-delay effect with it.

Here's my spec for a new acoustic guitar plugin which I'm shamelessly publicising.

Check near the bottom of the page, and see if it isn't exactly what you need for your acoustic guitar recording needs.

Does anyone know of any usable pitch-tracking (non-MIDI) oscillators that will for a bass guitar on OSX?
Ken McLaren - Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:34 pm
Damn jufros, sorry, we have built one for PC VST Called GhettoBass, but not for mac sorry..

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not looking for a bass guitar emulator but rather something along the lines of the FrettedSynth plugins in either OSX AU or VST format.

This thread never really got off the ground like it was supposed to....this sticky thread was a compromise to having a separate guitar forum on KVR and we were supposed to post links to all the ongoing guitar threads on KVR here, regardless of forum category, so you could just check here to find all the latest guitar links.

cab sim development (was
cabinet vs reverb convolution, thanks bpblog!) - it seems to me this is the biggest frontier left in amp simulation and there is still a lot of development left to be done. I think the missing great amp "feel" will come from improved dynamic cab simulation - let's discuss...
strangedogs - Thu May 27, 2010 4:59 am
I agree - so far the amp sims have improved more and more - the lack of "feel" has more to do with the cabs now I believe... Theres still something about a speaker "breathing" that's hard to nail down. I think Amp Sims can pretty well emulate real amps (at least SS ones) but the cabs are the key here.
