I think the levels of flaming and personal attacks are way down...the number of pointless threads is up...the number of threads related to music production and sound design is down...the number of "best whatever" threads remains consistent -- with the same replies and same recommendations. You didn't miss anything.

Oh, and we have a very consistently cheecky female contributor. In almost every pointless thread out there, she's made at least one smirkable remark.
Hink - Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:35 pm
4 1/2 years, I can't really see that it's changed all that much tbh. One exception though, staying out of hpc was a great thing for me. I swore it off june of 05 and KvR is a hell of a lot better. Now dont take that as I think hpc should go away, I think it's needed, just not for me Wink

It's really a love hate thing this KvR, but so is life. People here have been true friends, too many to list. Also over the years I have had some real crappy things said and/or done to me that makes me want to blow up the servers. Sometimes I explode, sometimes I go away for a bit and sometimes I bite my tongue. The frequency of both haven't changed much over the years though.

The only problem that changes over time is when you develop a true respect for someone only to find out their friendship was bogus. I also wish people would stick to one name, I find it very disrespectful to keep reinventing yourself...it makes it hard to take anything those people say seriously. There are exceptions though, some don't try to reinvent themselves, but end up changing their names for other reasons. That's not so bad because I still know who they are.

The bottom line is KvR is an online community that works for me, I'm very lucky to call most of the people here friends Smile

In fact, she's the most visible female on the site, and can be reliably found in any thread that has little or nothing to do with music. And, as one can readily see, so quiet and well-mannered. Razz HiHi

I've noticed a change. Whether the change was in KvR or my conception of KvR, I can only speculate. My best guess is a mix of the two.

But I look at it this way: I used to recommend KvR to people as a professional place to discuss audio production. But I haven't recommended it to anyone in "real" life for years, because there is too much know-it-all-ness, 1-up-manship, basic school boy antics, intolerance of differences, the list goes on.

While there still is plenty of proper discussion, the signal-to-noise ratio seems to have gone for the worse. When I first started posting, a thread entitled "How Do I Get Started Making Hip Hop Beats" would be full of compression techniques, sampling explanations, et cetera. Today the responses are more along the lines of "Well why not just do what your hero timbaland did and just rip off a chiptune? "rolleyes:"

But again, maybe it's just what I notice that has changed.
hao nao - Sat Mar 08, 2008 11:01 pm
yeah, KVR HAS changed, and not for the same
HanafiH - Sat Mar 08, 2008 11:30 pm

You know Kronfeld, I'm starting to wonder if that advice I got on KvR about a physical Reason rack being the best hardware synth was entirely apposite.

Agreed. It's like the frat boys of music software have taken up residence in greater numbers. One has to wade through lots of pointless posts to find actual information.

you know, we all change, the world changes, the internet changes, our jobs change....life is full of changes, sometimes I think though it's easier for us to assume it's bad because it might take a little extra work to see the benefits. Change can be uncomfortable, but sometimes comfort equals boring or worse complacency. But change can also be beneficial, rewarding and break up the monotony. Which also may bring new and exciting possibilities Shrug

It's really the truth, though Sad

My hotmail account is so "grandfathered in" that despite having the name "Kali Blanc" and therefore having to remind people that it's me all the time I can't change it now. Too many people have it. I only used a fake name because I was afraid the evil internet would steal my information back in '95 or whenever. I'm still unamused by the fact that my name is posted on here every once in a while.

@xoxos: that album cover looks incredibly cool

It's so funny because I bought the album on vinyl when it came out and then again on CD, and the four themes within the work are ingrained in me head from listening to it so many times. It never occurred to me that the title might be mistaken for a quadraphonic work. Sorry, not making fun of you. It just struck me as hilarious. Probably says far more about me than you. Smile
